AIM

Science is a unique core subject which offers choice within entitlement for all pupils. Our objective is to create the opportunities and experiences necessary for pupils to become self-reliant, self-motivated, life-long learners of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology and Health and Social Care.

CURRICULUM

KS3

In Year 7 pupils are allocated one of three ability bands and they use the Dynamic Learning programme of study as a basis of their learning. They have three 50-minute lessons each week and study aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.They have a 30-minute practical skills lesson to develop an understanding of how to work in a secondary school laboratory. In Year 8, pupils are taught in five ability sets and continue to develop their understanding of Science by using the Dynamic Learning programme of study as a basis for their learning. They have three 50-minute lessons each week and study aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Year 9 is in two parts; Pre- GCSE and GCSE. In the first part, pupils consolidate their understanding of the KS3 national Curriculum and complete several assessments to determine their GCSE learning pathways. The second part involves an introduction and induction into KS4 courses. They have four 50-minute lessons each week and study aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

KS4

At KS4 all pupils follow the OCR Twenty First Century Science programme of study. There is choice within the entitlement to study Science, pupils have the opportunity to study Separate Sciences (Triple), Core and Additional Science (Double) or Core Science (Single) depending on their ability. All three courses incorporate aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. They have two 50-minutes lessons of Biology, Chemistry and Physics each week.

Post-16

We offer Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology within the Welwyn Hatfield Consortium. Students have five 50-minute taught lessons and one study lesson.
