Citizenship pupils visit Parliament

February 28, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

The Citizenship class visit Parliament to learn how the country’s laws are made

by Aimee H and Flora M

On Monday 28th February, the GCSE Citizenship classes went on an extremely exciting trip to the Houses of Parliament! It was a fantastic day and we would like to tell you all about it.

To begin with, we went into the education centre part of Parliament to watch a very informative video teaching us all about the history of Parliament dating all the way back to the signing of the Magna Carta and how women got the vote! We then met our tour guide Evangeline, who also happened to be an ex-Bishop’s pupil (what a coincidence!). It was very interesting to learn all about the ins and outs of Parliament. The first room we visited was the Queen’s dressing room, which was very private. We loved admiring the beautiful artistry. Next we were told about the different lobbies where the MPs go to vote on different matters when the speaker can’t quite tell if the result was a yes or a no. There are two. If you stand in the “aye” lobby, that means you are voting in favour of something and the “no” lobby means you are voting against it. We visited the “no” lobby which was located at the back of the House of Commons.

Our favourite part of the trip was visiting the House of Commons and the House of Lords, where all the action happens! In the House of Commons, we both stood opposite each other in the place where Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn stand in debates which was really cool.

We thoroughly enjoyed having a lunch that overlooked the River Thames, and experiencing multiple Brexit protests. We witnessed people protesting for both Leave and Remain. One that we thought was very extreme was one where there were people in the middle of the road shouting “leave means leave”!

We learnt a lot throughout the day, some of the facts that stood out to us were:

– Jo Cox (an MP that lost her life) and other MPs had a special plaque in the House of Commons to commemorate their political contributions. – The Green Party only have 1 of 650 seats in the House of Commons – Michael Gove missed being able to vote in a recent debate (he only managed to get his foot through the door before time was up when he should have stuck his head through!) – MPs are given 8 minutes to get to the voting lobbies and apparently it’s 8 minutes because that’s how long it would take Theresa May to run from 10 Downing Street to Parliament!

Overall, it was the best school trip we had been on. It was beneficial and the time we spent there was highly valuable. The only disappointment was Grant Shapps not coming although we had written to him.

We would like to thank Mrs Jackson, Mr Griffiths and Mrs Coleman for organising the trip. We appreciate how beneficial it has been for our learning.

Congratulations to our Intermediate Youth Speaks Team!

February 27, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Our Intermediate Youth Speaks Team performed brilliantly at the District Final.

Our Intermediate Team of Nelly C, Lily L and Katie H, spoke beautifully at last night’s Rotary Youth Speaks District Final at Vandyke Upper School in Leighton Buzzard. Discussing the query, “Should more support be given to the homeless?” the girls spoke eloquently and with boundless enthusiasm and we as a school are immensely proud of their achievement of getting so far in the competition.

The girls faced teams from all over the District including, Aylesbury High School, Ashylns School, Beechwood Park School, St Alban’s Girls’ School and The Priory School. Unfortunately, the girls did not win but they were definitely Mrs Jackson’s winners by far!

A massive well done to them all and huge congratulations go to Katie H who won a prize for the “Best Vote of Thanks” of the evening – well done Katie! We look forward to hearing what the girls are going to talk about in the competition next year!

Year 12 and 13 Psychology Trip to London Zoo

Year 12 and 13 Psychology Phobias Trip to London Zoo

Forty-Five Year 12 and 13 Psychology Students at Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School visited London Zoo on Tuesday 16th February. We were lucky to enjoy warm and sunny weather while visiting various animal enclosures including the tiger, monkey, penguin, lion and gorilla enclosures and also the Reptile House to consider why some non-dangerous animals cause phobic responses. The highlight of the trip was two talks by John Clifford, a Clinical Hypnotherapist, on the causes and treatments of phobias. John gave some interesting anecdotes on patients he has successfully treated for spider phobia including a woman who broke her leg jumping out of a first floor window to escape a spider that was between her and the door and then began to move in her direction. Also a young girl who tried to dive out of the passenger seat in her Dad’s car, which was travelling at 70 mph, when she spotted a spider running across the dashboard but who fortunately could not undo her seat belt fast enough to be successful. The students then had the opportunity to take part in a group hypnosis session to rid themselves of their irrational fear of spiders and then many were willing to hold one of London Zoo’s habituated tarantulas. A very enjoyable and informative day!

Success for our Intermediate Rotary Youth Speaks Team

February 12, 2019/in General News/by BHGS

Year 9 Intermediate Rotary Youth Speaks Team won the District Semi-Final!

We were very proud to have two Intermediate teams through to the Rotary Youth Speaks District Semi-Final on Tuesday 29th January at Barnwell School, Stevenage.

The Year 7 team of Lola McG, Saifya G and Aliyeen A spoke brilliantly on the topic of gender equality and the gender pay gap. They explained how much our school do to try and break gender stereotypes and spoke fluently and confidently. They were the youngest team through to the Semi-Finals and they did our school proud! Well done to them.

The Year 9 team of Lily L, Nelly C and Katie H spoke on the topic of homelessness and discussed the question of whether the government are doing enough to support people who are homeless. The girls won the Semi-Final and are now through to the District Final at Leighton Buzzard on Tuesday 26th February! Good luck girls, your school are very proud of you.

Senior Youth Speaks Success!

February 11, 2019/in General News/by BHGS

Bishop’s Senior Youth Speaks Team win through to Regional Finals

On Tuesday 5th February our senior team competed in the District Finals of the national Rotary Club Youth Speaks competition. They were up against 6 other teams from schools in Herts, Bucks and Beds and competition was very stiff. Our team of Marta Fernandez-Pino, Elena Savvas and Katie McAree did a fantastic job in their presentation on ‘Why do we ignore conflicts?’. The judges were very impressed and they were successful in being selected to go through to the next round. They will now compete in the Regional Semi-Finals! Congratulations to the girls who get better and better every time they compete.

Young MFL Leaders

February 7, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Largest number of Year 10 Young Leaders bring languages and culture to life in our local primary schools!

BHGS Young MFL Leaders Programme

Sixty-five of our Year 10 MFL Leaders in six teams visited Oak View, Hatfield Community Free and St Philip Howard Primary Schools on Tuesday 5th February, giving French, German and Spanish language and culture themed workshops to KS2 pupils.

Young Leader initiatives have made a great impact on the teaching of young people over the last 20 years across many curriculum areas, using a sports team model. The BHGS Foreign Language Leader Programme hopes to engage a whole new group of young leaders through MFL and this year we have had the largest participation to date!

The Young Leaders planned, delivered and evaluated their learning activities for the Years 4 and 5 pupils, with an eye to developing and demonstrating leadership skills through foreign language related tasks. There will be certificates and awards for Team Leadership and Initiative to be presented in July 2019.

Our students were, as ever, enthusiastic and brilliantly delivered their lessons to the younger pupils – they were also able to find out what life is like on the ‘other side’ of the whiteboard! They now look forward to their second placements next term and the Foreign Languages Discovery Day which is to be hosted at our school on 4th June in which the Year 10 pupils will play the leading roles presenting languages and cultures from all around the world.
