Safer Internet Week

January 31, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

As a school, we explored the idea of respect and positive relationships when using the internet.

Using the internet safely and positively is a key message that we promote in school and celebrating Safer Internet Week is a great opportunity for us to re-emphasise the online safety messages we deliver throughout the year. Safer Internet Week is a global campaign to promote the safe and responsible use of technology.

As part of this week, students worked together to build a replica of the school in Minecraft. Over the course of the week, students ranging from Year 7 to Year 11, along with the help of some teachers, attempted the challenge of building an exact replica of the BHGS site. The group showed fantastic teamwork and communication skills to develop something that looked amazingly identical to the school!

Year 8 Core Subject Competition

January 27, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

Year 8 pupils get challenged to answer questions in English, Maths and Science in a 4-week House competition

Throughout January, BHGS ran a Year 8 House competition in the form of a quiz across three core subjects. The pupils first competed for four weeks in their Form groups in order to nominate three finalists to represent their respective Houses. They then in turn competed against each other in a House final on Thursday 27th January. The 15 finalists were challenged to answer a variety of questions across English, Science and Mathematics. Giving the right answer was however not the only challenge. The students had to compete under the pressure of time whilst being cheered on by their fellow form members. At times, it was a close race and a lot of changes occurred in the ranking along the competition. The winning houses were: 1st place: Franklin 2nd place: Seacole 3rd place: Hadid

Well done to all who participated and those who supported them.

Have you logged into CompleteMaths Tutor yet?

January 27, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

302 pupils have logged into CompleteMaths Tutor so far – are you one of them?

Just before Christmas, parents were emailed about CompleteMaths Tutor, a new online maths tutoring platform consisting of targeted maths teaching, delivered by qualified teachers. More information can be found in our last communication: All about CompleteMaths Tutor  and also here: https://completemaths.com/tutor

Pupils were issued with their own login details and over the holidays a number of pupils logged on and started doing the Diagnostic Quiz or started work on one of the courses their teacher had enrolled them on.

One pupil Mukarrama Malik (Year 12) managed to complete so many quizzes and goals that they were ranked in the top 25 in the COUNTRY! She will shortly be receiving an Amazon voucher from CompleteMaths! Well done, Mukarrama!

Top users last week (these will all receive 5 House points!): – Elliot Chaplin Year 11 – Katie Russouw Year 7 – Katie Earl Year 11 – Mahi Jani Year 11 – Oliwia Urbanska Year 7

A few statistics from the 3rd week in January 2022: – 302 pupils have now logged into CompleteMaths Tutor – 102 pupils completed at least 1 goal last week

How many will have logged in by next week? Who will be the top users next week?

Save the World Club support the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch

January 27, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

Making bird feeders for our gardens

Save the World Club enjoyed making bird feeders this week. Mr Underwood showed us how to turn a small log into an amazing feeder to attract birds to our gardens. It was great fun mixing together the bird seed, Atora shredded suet and porridge oats to make a type of fat ball. We then moulded the mixture to fill holes in the logs. The girls were taught how to use a hammer safely to attach the hanging hook into their bird feeder.

The Save the World Club are supporting the RBPB Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend. Shockingly, we’ve lost 38 million birds from UK skies in the last 50 years, so it really is vital we do all we can to look after our birdlife.

In 2021, more than one million people took part in Big Garden Birdwatch, all coming together to look out for birds. Simply count the birds you see in your garden, from your balcony or in your local park for one hour between 28 and 30 January 2022.

Why not join in and be one in a million for 2022?

You can find out more and get expert advice and top tips on what and how to feed the birds, as well as how to sign up to take part in the Big Bird Watch by visiting: https://www.rspb.org.uk/get-involved/activities/birdwatch/

Spelling Bee Buzz

Bishop’s pupils enter the Spelling Bee challenge

This Half Term, pupils took part in the Bishop’s Spelling Bee House competition. I am in House Franklin and although I am in Year 7, I worked with Year 8, 9 and 10 to spell some very hard words, including ‘discombobulation’! We came 2nd overall. Each word was said by different people on a video. This included policemen and women, staff at Woburn Safari Park and Stevenage Football Club, NHS staff as well as Bishop’s staff and governors. I enjoyed all these themes. It was great fun despite the pressure of only having 15 seconds to write the words down!

Lily (7Fr)

Did you know that Spelling Bees are thought to originate from the United States during the 1800s, as a way to motivate students to learn standardised spelling? These spelling bees were usually held within individual schools and towns rather than nationally organised. At Bishop’s, we run our Spelling Bee every year and we base it on the English dictionary.

Young MFL Leaders Relaunched!

January 18, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

Year 10 MFL Leaders visit Hatfield primary schools, giving foreign language activity workshops to Year 4 & 5 pupils

Young MFL Leaders Programme – First placement

On Tuesday 18 January, fifty-nine of our Year 10 MFL Leaders in six teams visited Oak View School, Hatfield Community Free School and St Philip Howard Schools, giving French, German and Spanish activity workshops to Key Stage 2 pupils.

Young Leader initiatives have made a great impact on the teaching of young people over the last 20 years across many curriculum areas, using a sports team model. The BHGS Foreign Language Leader Programme hopes to engage a whole new group of young leaders through Modern Foreign Languages.

The Young Leaders planned, delivered and evaluated their learning activities for the Years 4 and 5 pupils, with an eye to developing and demonstrating leadership skills through foreign language related tasks. A follow-up visit will take place in the year including a Language Discovery Day for the Key Stage 2 pupils which will be hosted by our school in June. The Year 10 pupils will play a leading role, delivering a wide range of foreign languages and cultural experiences. There will be certificates and awards for Team Leadership and Initiative, which will be presented in July 2022.

Our students were, as ever, enthusiastic and brilliantly delivered their lessons to the younger pupils – they were also able to find out what life is like on the ‘other side’ of the whiteboard! They now look forward to their 2nd placements.

As ever, it was a great opportunity, with the necessary precautions still in place, to relaunch this popular outreach opportunity.
