Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award 2021

May 27, 2021/in General News/by BHGS

The Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award expedition goes ahead albeit with a few changes

The Duke of Edinburgh award ran slightly differently this year. Due to COVID restrictions unfortunately the girls were not allowed to camp overnight. However, this did not stop the whole year 9 cohort of 48 students completing their expedition. They spend an action-packed Friday on the school grounds pitching tents and cooking on the school field using the camping equipment. They studied maps and how to navigate and covered first aid as well as taking part in numerous other teamwork activities. On the following day they completed their 14km walk around the picturesque countryside of Hertfordshire. They set off from Burnham green, just north of Welwyn Garden City, and followed one of many circular routes over the course of 6 hours. The weather was looking daunting to start with, but the rain held off and the sun even made an appearance in the early afternoon. All students had a great day and worked brilliantly with their teams to keep moral up and navigate to the end.

Well done to everyone, and a special thank you to the wonderful staff who volunteered their time to help. DofE could not happen without their amazing support and time!

County Athletics Success For Bishop’s!

May 27, 2021/in General News/by BHGS

Junior and Senior teams win the first round of the County Athletics competition

On Thursday 20th May, the PE department took the Junior and Senior Athletics teams to Westminster Lodge Athletics track in St Albans for their first competitive fixture in nearly 2 years. Due to the pandemic, there were no Athletics competitions at all last year (including District, County and Cross Country) which meant the majority of the pupils had never represented Bishop’s at an Athletics fixture before.

The weather was quite blustery and rained threatened (and then appeared intermittently throughout) which meant some challenging conditions for our teams. However, the girls showed good resilience and composure to produce some excellent results against the other competing schools – Beaumont, Loreto, Ridgeway and Sandringham.

Junior team results – Hurdles – Libby P – 1st 100m – Ella C – 1st 200m – Stephanie O – 3rd 300m – Erin M – 1st 800m – Ruby S – 2nd 1500m – Anna S – 2nd 4 x 100m relay – Ife N, Daniella H, Princela O-A and Ella C – 3rd High Jump – Ella S – 1st Long Jump – Abi L – 2nd Discus – Gracie B – 2nd Shot – Ife N – 1st Javelin – Evie J – 2nd This meant the Junior team scored 51 points out of a possible 60 and they finished in 1st place! Well done girls!

Senior team results – Hurdles – Ena O – 1st 100m – Amelie H – 1st 200m – Katelin R – 1st 300m – Amelie D – 1st 800m – Daniella S – 1st 1500m – Amelie H – 2nd 4 x 100m Relay – Ena O, Erin A, Katelin R and Amelie H – 1st High Jump – Ena O – 1st Long Jump – Imogen D – 3rd Triple Jump – Katelin R – 1st Discus – Gwen F – 2nd Shot – Livi- Grace H – 1st Javelin – Roxy M – 4th This meant the Senior team scored 58 points out of a possible 65 and they finished in 1st place! Well done girls!

An outstanding achievement from all of the girls involved – well done! Thank you to all of the PE department for all of their time preparing the girls for this competition.

The next round of the competition will take place on Tuesday 25th May at Ridlins End Athletics track in Stevenage between 4-6pm. Competing schools – Dame Alice Owens, Presdales, Queenswood and John Warner.

Good luck to all of the girls involved!

Y7 in Maths Team Challenge Final

May 14, 2021/in General News/by BHGS

Team 2 came second in the Year 7 Maths Team Challenge heat and have qualified for the final in June.

On Thursday 6th March 2021, eight of our Year 7 pupils were split into two separate teams to compete against other Year 7 math teams in the area. Due to the global pandemic, the event was run online this year. Despite this, both teams did an outstanding job and worked together brilliantly. There were 4 rounds, two mathematical general knowledge, an estimation round and a memory round. At the end, we were excited to find out that one of our teams came 2nd in our heat with a score of 186 points. This team will now compete in the final on Wednesday 9th June. The year 7 competitors were Lilly-Jade T, Olivia D, Maahi P, Emma W, Bella W, Purva M, Hania B and Jiya P.

Mrs Garratt and Mrs Dudley were very pleased with the way everyone worked in their teams!

Well done to both teams and good luck to Team 2 for the final!

Space exploration with planet postcards.

May 13, 2021/in General News/by BHGS

In science we have taken a virtual trip to the planets and sent a postcard home to describe our experience!

In Mr Short’s science lessons we have been ‘exploring space’. We have been on a journey through the solar system and looked at all the planets, their atmospheres and how different they are to earth. After choosing our favourite planet we wrote a postcard home to describe our virtual experience living on our planet. My planet was Jupiter and the temperature was very difficult to cope with! Mia’s journey took her to Neptune where the lack of oxygen was a bit of a problem! We had great fun discovering all the facts about the planets, choosing our favourite and writing our postcards.

Awesome antibody origami

May 12, 2021/in General News/by BHGS

Using origami to construct and understand our amazing antibodies

In our Biology lesson, we are studying the human immune system and the role of antibodies produced in our body. Very topical during a pandemic! Antibodies are molecules that have a very complicated structure and we have used origami to help us to see the different parts of the molecule and their role in attaching to parts of a pathogen e.g. coronavirus. These antibodies are essential for natural immunity against viruses and other pathogens and the Covid vaccine boosts the production of antibodies that can bind and help destroy coronavirus. Respect for a small but complicated molecule!

Here come the BHGS Climate Heroes!

May 11, 2021/in General News/by BHGS

Save the World Club pledge to save the planet

For the past few weeks, members of our Save The World Club have participated in the BBC Climate Heroes Challenge in order to help our environment and combat climate change. We made pledges about Plastic, Power and Plants.

We chose to: – sort through our recycling at home carefully – switch from cling film to a reusable sandwich wrap – swap half an hour on screen time to half an hour outside – turn off an electrical device when we are finished using it rather than leaving it on standby – plant pollinator-friendly plants and look after them – save water by turning off the taps when brushing our teeth.

As a Club pledge, we went round all classrooms after school to turn off lights in any unused classrooms. Although these are small steps, we will continue with our pledges and make a difference to our world!

We completed our pledges over three weeks and created a collage from recycled materials, displaying photos of evidence of our pledges to save the world and become ‘climate heroes!’. We have sent off our evidence to earn our Blue Peter Green badges. This is the first time that adults can receive a Blue Peter badge so Mrs Ruffhead is very excited that she will receive one!

Chatterboxes keep Year 13 Law class quiet

May 4, 2021/in General News/by BHGS

Year 13 Law students have been exploring revision techniques

In Year 13 Law lessons we have been thinking about how to revise effectively. One activity that everyone enjoys is quizzing and retrieving information from memory as this has been shown to be a very effective revision tool. To bring back happy memories (for some), we made ‘Chatterboxes’ containing revision questions about the non-fatal offences. The class then asked each other the Chatterbox questions to test their knowledge. This is just one of the many revision activities that have been going on to prepare for the May assessments.
