A Level History Trip to Berlin, Germany

September 29, 2023/in General News/by BHGS

Year 13 students visited Berlin, Germany for a three-day History tour to enrich their learning of Weimar and Nazi Germany.

Year 13 A level History and German students spent a three-day weekend in Berlin to enrich their learning of the history and culture of Germany.

As part of their A Level History course, the students study the history of Germany from the end of the First World War, 1918 to the end of the Second World War, 1945. During this time period, Germany entered the inter-war period as a democracy under the Weimar Republic, and moved to a dictatorship under Hitler and the Nazi Party, who controlled Germany from the capital city of Berlin. On the three-day trip to Berlin, the students visited key historical sites, such as the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag, and were immersed in the history of the period through tours and visits to the places, such as the German Memorial Resistance Museum, Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial Museum and the Olympic Stadium. The students were also able to experience the food and culture of Berlin, with visits to cafés, the East Side Gallery, the Mall of Berlin and even had some free-time to relax during an evening of bowling!

The history of Nazi Germany is one of the darkest periods of history, and we visited many places where people in the past had suffered discrimination, persecution and murder under the Nazi regime. The students approached these stories with sensitivity, and they received praise for their engagement and maturity from all our tour guides. The students were all excellent representatives of our school and I am extremely proud to be their teacher.

As one student, Cerys said, “I found it extremely beneficial and a great insight into the true struggle of the people who feature throughout our A Level course. It has really helped me to add depth to my learning.”

I am so pleased that they gained so much from the trip!

Miss Maisey

World Challenge Malaysia 2023

September 4, 2023/in General News/by BHGS

From turtle conservation to trekking the jungle, Year 11 had a fully packed two weeks in Malaysia

At the end of the summer term, two groups of Year 11 pupils headed out to Malaysia with World Challenge. Throughout the trip they demonstrated a curiosity for Malaysian culture and showed perseverance as they completed a jungle trek. Here’s what one of the participants, Ruby, had to say about her experience:

This summer, 11 other students and myself had the unforgettable opportunity to explore and experience Malaysia and its incredible culture.

I thoroughly enjoyed the entire trip, however, one of my favourite memories was releasing baby turtles into the ocean, it was so surreal and everything about the experience was perfect. I also really enjoyed being able to help the local marine life conservators collect litter from the beach to ensure safety for the nesting turtles. We were able to help further by participating in night patrols to ensure the turtles and their eggs were protected.

Before Malaysia, I did not think I would enjoy the 2 day trek in Taman Negara National Park. Yet, I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the trek as I was able to see the cascades and interesting wildlife (I did not enjoy seeing leeches though!). At the end of the 2 day trek, after spending the night in the jungle, we travelled by boat back to our hostel. This was a very refreshing way to finish the trek as we were able to observe the nature and wildlife all around us which included monkeys and lizards.

Towards the end of the two week trip, we visited the Batu Caves and the Petronas Towers, which was also one of my favourite memories. The view was absolutely incredible and it was a perfect way to end the amazing trip. I am very thankful that I was able to experience Malaysia this summer and couldn’t recommend a World Challenge trip more!

By Ruby C, Year 12

Thank you to Lee, Bex and Alex, the World Challenge leaders who accompanied the groups on their trip.
