Gaining guidance through Morrisby Testing

November 29, 2018/in General News/by BHGS

Year 11 pupils gained an in depth insight into their unique strengths, preferences and interests.

The purpose of Morrisby Testing is to help students discover their own unique blend of strengths and aptitudes through a range of structured psychometric and personality tests. Morrisby is a leading organisation in this field with a wealth of expertise. The individual sessions are interpreted and analysed, with guidance offered to pupils relating to careers and educational choices. There can be some surprising results, and this can encourage pupils to this about avenues and areas of study they may have previously discounted. The lifetime login can be used at various stages of future careers and there are a wide range of benefit in taking part. Congratulations to all participants – I am sure you have lots to think about going forward.

Finding inspiration in Borough Market

November 26, 2018/in General News/by BHGS

Year 11 went to Borough Market

Last week year 11 GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition students went to Borough Market as part of their course. They had a great time trying the different types of food on offer and came back full of inspiration.

Rotary Youth Speaks Competition Success

November 22, 2018/in General News/by BHGS

Bishop’s Senior teams compete in the National Youth Speaks competition

Bishop’s entered three senior teams for the first round of the Rotary Club’s National Youth Speaks Competition. All three teams did brilliantly, competing against senior teams from Dame Alice Owen’s School. We are very proud to announce that one of the two successful teams chosen to progress to the next round was our Year 11 team of Marta, Elena and Katie (pictured here with Diane Thompson of Brookmans Park Rotary). Congratulations to all the teams; they were all fantastic!

Work Related Learning STEM visit to Eisai Pharmaceuticals

November 22, 2018/in General News/by BHGS

An inspiring visit to a global business gets us thinking about our future choices

We visited Eisai Manufacturing Limited headquarters in the Hatfield Business Park. We met some of the really enthusiastic STEM Ambassadors, including scientists, engineers and HR. They explained their different roles in the company as well as how they started their own careers. We then had the opportunity to try different areas of the manufacturing process including tablet making. To do this we were presented with the powder (icing sugar and a few sprays of water) and given a compression apparatus. We had to try to keep the tablet intact; some groups had better luck than others! We then delved deeper into different company roles as we attempted a task of quality control. There were six tablets, with only one being the ‘perfect’ example. After ruling out tablets with obscure colours and shapes we found the correct one. Finally, we visited biochemistry labs where ground breaking research into Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease is taking place. We studied different types of cells through a microscope to determine which type of cell was being drown from stem cells.

After lunch, we took a grand tour of some of the different departments and the warehouse in Eisai. We had fun changing into lab coats, hair nets and shoe covers, allowing us to take a look at the manufacturing/production and packaging lines of some medicines. We were amazed at the precision and care taken in the production of drugs. Our visit ended by viewing the air and water filtration systems.

It was a really eye opening visit, showing everyone the way a pharmaceutical company works. We had not really considered the pharmaceutical world as having such a wide range of careers, and we were fascinated to hear more about the wide range of opportunities available in both business and scientific fields. We heard from one of BHGS former pupils, Natalia S, who started an apprenticeship there in September, and also from the Qualified Person who manages the operations side of the business, and is a former BHGS pupil, Jenna Tye. I would like to thank all of the STEM Ambassadors at Eisai for taking the time to show us around and talk to us about their careers – we thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Y7 House Poetry Competition

November 21, 2018/in General News, House Hadid, House Seacole/by BHGS

Year 7 took part in a poetry performance competition to win points for their house.

On Wednesday 21st November Year 7 gathered in the hall during period 3 to watch the finals of the house performance poetry competition. For the last two weeks pupils have been learning about performance poetry in their English lessons, and practising and refining their skills. The two finalists from each form today performed their poems in front of the whole of Year 7, and a panel of judges.

We had a guest performance from one of our judges, Mr Dudley, before all 10 girls took to the stage. It takes a lot of courage to stand up in front of such a large audience, and the judges were impressed by just how well all of the finalists performed. Many of them had not only learnt their poems off by heart, but also thoroughly embraced the concept of performance poetry, acting out their poems enthusiastically and confidently with the aid of the occasional prop.

Special mention must go to our three winners. Thea in 7Ha was the overall winner, with Ruby and Jade (both from 7Se) finishing in second and third place respectively, giving Hadid 100 points and Seacole a total of 75 points. All the other finalists were awarded an excellent (worth 5 house points) for representing their form. Congratulations to all the girls who took part.

Year 8 Engineering Challenge

November 21, 2018/in General News/by BHGS

Year 8 design and test roller coasters and cars in a fantastic event run by the EDT and funded by ARISE Hatfield

We welcomed the Engineering Development Trust on Monday 19th November who, with volunteer STEM Ambassadors from businesses, ran a fantastic whole day workshop for all pupils in Year 8. We heard how engineers are the inventors of the future, creating solutions to a wide range of problems using innovative technology and creative thinking. We all gained a great insight into this field of employment which is experiencing great shortages of well qualified employees. The girls were asked to consider the business of roller coaster design and were then challenged to apply their understanding of forces and motion to design and create roller coasters, which were then tested using a marble as the carriage. Later in the afternoon session cars were designed and tested using elastic band power. Some amazing designs were created, and the STEM Ambassadors were delighted with the way the girls rose to the challenge. We would like to thank EDT and the STEM Ambassadors for giving up their time, ARISE Hatfield for the funding for the project and the pupils of Year 8 for getting involved and stretching their skills.

BHGS A Level biologists enjoy a trip to the Wellcome Genome Institute

November 20, 2018/in General News/by BHGS

Bishop’s A Level biologists enjoy a day at the Wellcome Genome Institute in Cambrige.

Bishop’s & Stanborough School A Level biologists enjoyed a trip to the Wellcome Genome Campus in Cambridg today. The day began with an introduction to the work at the Institute, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. We had a fascinating talk from one of the bioinformatics scientists, telling us about the human cell atlas (https://www.sanger.ac.uk/news/view/international-human-cell-atlas-initiative). We worked in groups to look for a common mutation found in a gene that is associated with malignant melanomas. We finished with a tour of the facility, looking at the latest sequencing machines. It was a great and very inspirational day.

Sicily Trip 2018

November 20, 2018/in General News/by BHGS

Year 11 & 13 amazing trip to the spectacular island of Sicily

Year 11 and Year 13 students travelled to Sicily early on Friday 26th October to visit the volcanic landscapes of Sicily. On arrival at Catania airport, we travelled to the Alcantara Gorges to see the spectacular basalt formations in the gorge. Some brave students paddled in the freezing cold water to see the rock gorge close up! Saturday was spent travelling to the volcanic islands of Lipari and Vulcano. The weather was beautiful and we unexpectedly saw 2 inquisitive whales beside the boat. Mt Etna was our destination on Sunday. The clouds had rolled in so we were only able to reach 2000 m. We walked on a lava flow and visited the street market in Zafferana. We walked into Giardini Naxo on Monday morning and then to the hill town settlement of Taormina, where the students were given a selfie scavenger hunt challenge. Then it was time to travel by coach to the airport and back to the UK. It was, as some of our students said, ‘the best trip I’ve been on!’ and ‘A really fun trip to an amazing part of the world’.

Bishop’s brings STEM experience to local primary school

November 20, 2018/in General News/by BHGS

Bishop’s staff and pupils visit Countess Anne Primary School for an afternoon of science demonstrations

Mr Krendel, Mr Short and Ms Walker were joined by 6 students from our Sixth Form to deliver an exciting afternoon of STEM activities at Countess Anne Primary School. As part of our primary links programme in science, we are delighted to be able to offer such opportunities to pupils in our local primary schools. Demonstrations ranged from chemical reactions to physics practicals and microscopy. The pupils from Years 5 and 6 were very excited by what they saw and we hope that they will continue to be enthused by science as they move into the secondary phase of their education.
