Circle Theorems on Plates

July 21, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

Year 10 get creative in maths!

During their Face to Face sessions, Year 10 were introduced to the world of circle theorems. Another topic that we have found difficult to teach remotely! Pupils then spent a couple of lessons applying their knowledge to some problems before creating a visual display of one of the theorems. I’m hoping that the plates will not be lost between now and September so that they can be used for an actual display in one of the maths classrooms.

Finally a few thank you’s –

Thank you to all of the pupils for all of their hard work and effort during the week. It’s been fantastic to see so many of you involved and representing your form and Houses.

Thank you to all of the form tutors and Heads of House for promoting and encouraging the pupils to get involved in this event.

Thank you to all of the staff who got involved (especially those who made those brilliant videos!) in the events. It was great to see all of your efforts and we know the girls really appreciated seeing you getting involved too.

Thank you to Mrs Dudley for organising all of the results sheets and helping to collate the final scores.

Thank you to Mrs Fautrero-Sayer for all of the social media posts and updates to help promote the event.

And last but not least, thank you to the PE department for all of their hard work in organising and running Virtual Sports Day Week 2020. Sports Day is normally a huge task in terms of preparation and running a whole school event and we were determined not to miss out this year – even with Lockdown! Thank you for taking the time to make this event happen.

I hope you have had as much fun as we have had getting involved and doing something a little different (and definitely memorable) for Sports Day this year and here’s hoping we can do our regular Sports Day next year!

Have a lovely Summer break everyone! Stay safe, keep active and see you in September!

Library Summer 2020 Reads

July 16, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

Recommended summer reads and the power of reading

The Library have put together a list of recommended summer reads for all year groups, as well as parents and staff. Click on the link to take a look: BHGS Library Recommended Summer 2020 Reads

The power of reading is immense. International reading studies show that reading is more important than ever before. Why? Because…

  • It helps develop your empathy – by allowing you to step into someone else’s shoes and experience their life. This allows us to better understand each other and communicate more clearly
  • It helps nurture your mental health and well-being
  • It helps you develop your vocabulary and comprehension
  • Reading gives us words – words which we can use to express ourselves, leading to less frustration and anger and better mental health
  • It increases your knowledge, therefore making you smarter!
  • Reading has been reported as one of the most important factors in children’s and young people’s educational success. Yet children in England report reading for pleasure much less than children in other countries
  • It can help you sleep better & a good night’s sleep is key to mental health
  • Reading is like a gym work out for your brain!
  • You may not like reading – but as with everything the more you practice the easier it gets. When things are easier we enjoy them more!

So why not grab a book… and go on a new adventure…

Wishing everyone a wonderful summer break.

Shocking Acidic Levels in Oceans

July 15, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

Ocean Acidification Tests in the Lab

Hannah in Year 12 is currently working on a Report as part of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). Hannah’s title is: The implications of ocean acidification on marine biodiversity. Having completed a huge amount of research, reading through lots of articles and books on theories behind ocean acidification, Hannah designed an experiment that could be conducted in the school lab to replicate the impacts of ocean acidification.

We are grateful for the help of Mrs Walker, who arranged the equipment needed for the experiment and also Dr Bune, for her guidance and support – thank you. The first stage of the experiment was carried out on Tuesday 14th July to investigate the impacts of increased hydrogen ion concentrations on the shells of calcifying organisms. As pH decreases (becomes more acidic), it is expected that the shells will begin to dissolve, as dissolution exceeds calcification rates, and the shells will reduce in mass. Six beakers with water of different pH values containing shells have been left in a dark cupboard in the science lab for the next three days! The second stage will be to weigh the shells again to calculate the percentage decrease in mass due to the effects of increased acidification. Dr Bune has kindly agreed to weigh the shells again on Friday – thank you.

Hannah will analyse and interpret the results of this experiment and compare them with the scientific theories on the impacts of increased acidification on our oceans. You can hear more about this at Hannah’s EPQ presentation in the Autumn term.

Miniature Book Making with Chatterbooks

July 15, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

We made miniature books in Chatterbooks

The Year 7 Chatterbooks club were inspired by the British Library’s blog about the Infant’s Library created by John Marshall more than 200 years ago. He had the idea of helping children learn to read by creating miniature books for then to read to their dolls. Miniature books were so popular that Charlotte Bronte’s first book, created when she was 12, was a miniature book in which she wrote a story for her younger sister Anne. Charlotte and her siblings went on to make many miniature books. The library in Queen Mary’s Doll House contained almost 600 miniature books, written by well-known authors such as J.M. Barrie (Peter Pan) and A.A. Milne (Winnie the Pooh).

With this in mind the Chatterbooks students had a go at making their own miniature books. The girls produced beautiful books – which given that they were having to create them via a Zoom talk, alongside a pre-recorded video on paper folding and a slide presentation was even more impressive! Well done girls!

If you’d like to have a go at making your own miniature books, have a look at the British Library’s website for instructions. Click on the link: https://www.bl.uk/childrens-books/activities/make-a-miniature-book

You can also see some of your favourite children’s authors, such as Jacqueline Wilson, Katherine Rundell and Jospeh Coelho, with the miniature books they created and listen to them bring their stories alive in their readings. Year 9 investigate South Africa

July 14, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

Year 9 have developed their research skills through investigating the geography of South Africa.

To finish off the academic year, some of our Year 9 students have been researching the country of South Africa in their Geography lessons. The girls have been developed their research skills and enjoyed creating some excellent presentations covering topics such as:

– Interesting Facts about South Africa – Physical Geography of South Africa – Human Geography of South Africa – Tourist Attractions – South African Animals – Sports – Damage to the natural environment – Crime in South Africa – Food – Clothes – Education – South Africa Traditions – Famous South African people

The girls have enjoyed sharing facts about South Africa during Google Meets in our Geography lessons over the past 2 weeks. Great work girls!

Junior Maths Challenge Record

July 13, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

Record number of Gold Awards!

Our Years 7 and 8 girls proved to us how fantastic they could be as our top groups managed to pull in a record number of awards. This competition was made all the harder this year as schools and students had to make arrangements for the competition to be done online for the first time in history of the challenges. Despite these difficulties, Amber Sugg, Edie Keenan from Year 8, and Genna Yuen, Simran Gundigara, Katie Corke and Chloe Alton from Year 7 were extraordinarily successful in the competition, achieving Gold. This is phenomenal achievement as only about 5% of the country attain the coveted Gold Award. On top of this we have a further 15 Silver Award winners and 28 Bronze Award winners. This is a staggering number of awards and the Maths department are thrilled with these results. We look forward to seeing how these students’ Mathematical skills develop in the coming years.

Top 50 Finish for Legal Apprentices

July 7, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

A Year 12 team has finished in the top 50 of a national legal competition run by law firm, Kingsley Napley.

A Year 12 team has finished in the top 50 of a national legal competition run by law firm, Kingsley Napley. The team, Molly Hoy, Abbie Smith, Bella Pocknell and Lily Kersey had to complete three tasks between February and June, The task included answering questions based around three legal scenarios covering regulatory, family and dispute resolution law; drafting a witness statement for a client involved in an inheritance dispute; and making a video pitching for a client.

This photo was taken from the video they submitted which was really professional! Each task involved a lot of background reading and preparation and the team worked really hard to put in entries that were of a good quality whilst keeping up with their A-Level Law (and other) homework! Over 700 teams nationally entered the competition and the team were pleased with their overall result.
