The Big Garden Birdwatch

January 31, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

Green Club braves the weather for the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch

The school joined the RSPB ( Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) for its annual bird watch this month for the 4th year running. Although the weather was miserable, we are pleased to announce that the wild bird population is slowly increasing around our school, showing that the great work the members of the Green Club are doing is paying off.

Over half a million people regularly take part in counting birds in their gardens. With 40 years’ worth of data, the Big Garden Birdwatch has allowed the RSPB to monitor trends and better understand how birds are doing. If you want to join us next year, please contact The Green Club.

Australian Bush Fire Crisis

January 28, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

How has Australia been effected by bush fires?

Our Save The World Club looks at the Australian bush fire crisis.

A large fire broke out on Yorke Peninsula, South Australia on 20th November 2019 and threatened the towns of Yorketown and Edithburgh. It destroyed at least 11 homes and burnt approximately 5,000 hectares (12,000 acres). The fire was believed to have started from a sparking electrical transformer. Australia have had a drought a few years before the fires started, so everything was extremely dry beforehand. Also, most, if not all, trees in Australia have an oil substance in them, so it doesn’t take long before they set alight. There is a widely-reported estimate that almost half a billion (480 million) animals have been killed by the bush fires in Australia. It’s a figure that came from Prof Chris Dickman, an expert on Australian biodiversity at the University of Sydney. At least 25,000 koalas are believed to have died in a horrific wildfire in South Australia that may have devastating consequences for the survival of the species. Now the fires have consumed nearly 18 million acres of land, causing thousands of people to evacuate and killing millions of animals. They’re showing minimal signs of slowing down and the Australian state of New South Wales, where both Sydney and Canberra are located, declared a state of emergency this week, as worsening weather conditions could lead to even greater fire danger. But a 50,000-year-old solution could exist: Aboriginal burning practices. Here’s how it works: ‘Aboriginal people had a deep knowledge of the land’ said historian Bill Gammage, an emeritus professor at Australian National University who studies Australian and Aboriginal history, ‘they can feel the grass and know if it would burn well; they knew what types of fires to burn for what types of land, how long to burn, and how frequently.’ But we don’t have those skills though. Aboriginal techniques are based in part on fire prevention: ridding the land of fuel, like debris, scrub, undergrowth and certain grasses. The fuel alights easily, which allows for more intense flames that are harder to fight. The Aboriginal people would set small-scale fires that weren’t too intense and clear the land of the extra debris. The smaller intensity fires would lessen the impact on the insects and animals occupying the land, too, as well as protect the trees and the canopy. And though current fire fighters on the ground still use some fuel control and hazard reduction techniques, Gammage said it’s not enough. ‘Some of it is being done, but not skillfully enough,’ he said. ‘We don’t really take into account plants and animals that might be endangered by fire. And secondly, we don’t really know what’s the best time of year, how much burn, how to break up a fire front.’ It’s not like they know nothing, Gammage said, especially the firefighters on the ground. But he said it’s not enough to make Australia safe.

Plastic Pollution in the Oceans

January 27, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

How the world is coping with plastic pollution in the oceans

Our Save The World Club looks at plastic pollution

10% of the plastic produced by the world every year enters the ocean each year and our addiction to single use is to blame.

A simple walk along any beach across the world and the plastic waste disaster is present. The spectacle becomes more poignant as thousands of bird corpses rest on these beaches with piles of colourful plastic remaining where their stomachs have been.

Do you think this is right?

– To help stop this disaster, when you’re walking in the street, if you see any litter, pick it up and put in the nearest bin to help save marine life.

– Use paper and other recyclable items like paper cups and bags.

Clean Up in Woods Avenue!

January 20, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

Save the World Club on a mission to clean up litter

Save the World Club are keen to keep the area outside school on Woods Avenue clean and litter free. We go out once every half term to pick up litter along the hedgerow and footpaths. The weather was ideal for this activity today (20/01/20) with some lovely winter sunshine. We donned our hi-vis jackets and litter pickers and had fun picking up the litter to leave the street looking neat and tidy. Thank you to Mrs Martin for organising the litter picker grabbers, hi-vis vests and bin bags. If you are concerned about keeping the environment clean around school, why not come along to Save the World Club and find out when our next litter pick is planned?

Willow Concert 2019

January 1, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

Singing for the Willow Christmas Concert 2019

Despite being members of the choir for so long, we still always look forward to the Willow Foundation Carol Concert every year! Each year, we stay after school on the night of the concert to practise, enjoying the extra time with our friends from the choir. Going to choir rehearsals has become one of the most entertaining parts of each of our weeks! Then, we travel by coach to the picturesque St Albans Cathedral… The beautiful building never fails to amaze us!

Yet, the real enjoyment comes from the concert itself. After a couple of hours worth of practising, and perfecting our parts, the concert begins. It is such a pleasure for us to be in the presence of Bob and Megs Wilson, especially since Anna Wilson used to attend Bishops’, and the choir’s performance holds a special place in their hearts. The atmosphere is always so full of love. Hearing Herts Chorus perform is a privilege and we aspire to sound like them one day! The concert is always emotional for us, and such a touching experience. The Willow Foundation, a charity that provides people with serious illnesses a chance to have a special day, is a charity that we respect so much. We are glad to help them raise money for such a brilliant and worthy cause. Their work over the years has been so amazing, and the concert always exceeds our expectations!
