‘We Will Rock You’ School Production

March 29, 2019/in General News/by BHGS

BHGS School Production ‘We Will Rock You’ was ‘a kind of magic’

A spectacular production of ‘We Will Rock You’ took place at Bishop’s between 27th – 29th March. ‘Energetic, uplifting, emotional and slick’, were words the packed audience passed on. Huge congratulations should be given to the cast and crew who gave up so much time since the start of the new year to produce such a successful set of performances. We look forward to next year’s production. Thank you to Ms Punchard, Mrs James and Mr Kench for bringing the best out of them.

Mardleybury Gallery – Young Carers

March 26, 2019/in General News/by BHGS

Young Carers visit a local gallery and get a chance to make their own art with guidance from 3 artists.

On Thursday 26th March, eight Young Carers from Years 7 and 8 visited Mardleybury Gallery near Woolmer Green. They were welcomed by the gallery owner and artist, Marilyn Comparetto, who invited the girls to look around the gallery at the different artwork by various artists. They photographed some of the pieces that interested them and then had their own turn at using pastels, chalks and pencils to create a picture from this inspiration. As well as Marilyn’s guidance, they also had two other artists: Trevor Childs and Maureen Masterman, who showed them how they work. The pupils were highly engaged by their input and enjoyed a relaxing afternoon of drawing and chatting.

“I don’t often get time to myself to draw,” commented one Young Carer. Several others agreed and were thrilled when they were presented with their own mini art box at the end of the afternoon.

Many thanks to all at Mardleybury Gallery for such a wonderful opportunity you gave the girls, in your own time. And thank you to the Young Carers who took part as well as Mrs Ruffhead for accompanying the group.

BHGS Team makes it to the Final of the Year 7 Maths Team Challenge

Four Y7 pupils went to a Maths competition on Tuesday 19th March to compete as a team against other Year 7 teams in the area. They worked together fantastically as a team and came first, with a score of 196 points. They nearly broke the record of 200 points for this stage of the competition. They now go forward to the Hertfordshire Y7 Maths Team Challenge Final on Wednesday 24th April and we wish them luck. The girls were Ruby Cannon, Diana Caprioara, Ciara Doyle, and Hannah Pendrey. Well done, girls!

Science Live boosts GCSE learning

March 14, 2019/in General News/by BHGS

Year 10 pupils get top tips from leading scientists for their Science GCSEs

by Ibukun O. (Year 10)

GCSE Science Live took place on 1st March. It was a relaxed experience where Year 10 pupils were able to hear from different scientists and be educated on their area of expertise. When hearing about how weird the molecular structure of ice was with synthetic chemist Andrea Sella, we were able to view a series of experiments that questioned the information that we assume today and see how dry ice contradicts that. Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock showed us clips of how she believes the moon came to be and how it helps us. We also heard about the environment and genetics and that ‘1 in 3 people will die because of reasons associated with our genes’ from Prof. Steve Jones and Prof. Lucie Green explaining technology and space exploration concerning the sun. Robert Winston, the last professor we heard from, showed us the importance and how fascinating the body is and our growing knowledge of fertility and ways of treating infertility. It was interactive and interesting, not to mention insightful as we heard from a GCSE chief examiner who provided some tips and tricks to doing well in the GCSE Science exams.

March 6, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Whole school unites to promote ‘fairness and equality’!

The annual Fairtrade Fortnight competition was strongly contested by all forms in Years 7 to 11 during International Fairtrade Fortnight 2019. Forms were given a t-shirt and fabric paints and given the brief to design a t-shirt on the theme of ‘Fairness and Equality’. A representative from each form took part in a Fairtrade fashion show at lunchtime on Wednesday 6th March. The creativity of each design was especially impressive this year. Winners in each year group were: 7 Austen, 8 Seacole, 9 Franklin, 10 Austin, 11 Franklin and 11 Hadid. Congratulations! Fairtrade prizes will be delivered to your form rooms this week! Thank you everyone for enthusiastically embracing this year’s Fairtrade challenge.

International Food Tasting Event

March 4, 2019/in General News/by BHGS

Delicious food from around the world!

To celebrate our International Fairtrade Fortnight (25th February until 8th March 2019), students brought in plates of delicious food linked to their culture to share with their peers (and staff!). There were foods from all continents to taste at lunchtime on Friday 1st March. This popular event attracted a large number of students and staff who patiently queued to taste the different foods, including potato and vegetable curries, chin chin (little crispy doughnuts) snacks, a range of tasty rice dishes, a polish meat dish, Indian snacks, Victoria sandwich cakes and spicy Italian biscuits. There was a real “buzz” in the room and everyone left smiling. Thank you to everyone who contributed a dish of food and to Miss Grossman for organising the event. We will definitely organise this event again next year.

Everest mountaineer Matt Dickinson visits Bishop’s

March 1, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Award-winning author, climber and film-maker Matt Dickinson visited Bishop’s on Monday

On Monday we were thrilled to welcome award-winning author, climber, adventurer and film-maker Matt Dickinson to the school. Matt has made films and documentaries for the BBC, National Geographic TV and the Discovery Channel, as well as being the author of fiction and non-fiction.

Matt spoke to all of years 7, 8 and 9 about his climbing experiences on Mount Everest. We learnt that Matt attended Hemel school, Hemel Hempstead where his passion for climbing was ignited by borrowing a book on climbing from the school library. He was an ardent proponent of reading, saying how he had seen the world of his five children be expanded so positively by books. He urged the girls to be more adventurous with their reading, to push into different genres they wouldn’t normally pick up, try new books of someone they haven’t read before, get recommendations from friends etc as by being more adventurous it would expand their world in the most wonderful way. Matt said: ‘I’m a big reader, I’m always reading and try to engage with books across as wide a range of subjects as I can”.

Matt then proceeded to wow his audiences with a thrilling presentation of his experiences climbing Everest – he has reached the summit once and climbed lower on numerous occasions. He engaged the girls with statistics on the danger of mountain climbing, with a 4% chance of death when climbing Everest although this rises to a staggering 29% for K2, the world’s second highest peak. Perhaps unsurprisingly many of the girls, and staff, were willing to accept a 4% fatality risk for the chance of summiting Everest, but that number dropped considerably in relation to K2. Matt said that despite the danger, if he had a phone call tomorrow offering him the opportunity to go back to Everest or K2 he would go in a heartbeat, despite the fact that he loves his life and his five children and being fully aware of the risks involved. This led to a lively discussion as to the appeal of mountain climbing and the motives that drive people to take such extreme risks – sense of personal achievement, fame, bragging rights, fulfilling a dream etc.

He spoke about his personal experience with frostbite, sharing an astonishing photograph that caused a few squeals of disgust from the girls!, the effects of altitude sickness, the work of Sherpas on the mountain and the sacredness of Everest to them. His talk was peppered with fascinating photographs and video clips that highlighted his journey and experiences.

He encouraged the girls to have a dream and to plan for it in order to succeed. He made reference to numerous female explorers and pioneers that he has worked with, particularly Judy Leden, the British hang glider and paraglider pilot who holds three world champion titles and has combined her love of adventure with also raising a family.

Matt is the author of several teen/young adult novels all of which are influenced by his experiences. He talked about his Everest Files trilogy (The Everest Files, North Face and Killer Storm), featuring strong female protagonists, are thrilling reads set on the highest mountain in the world. “The Everest Files” is a mystery based on the dark side of human nature, which Matt witnessed first-hand during his time climbing Everest. He also mentioned his most recent book “Lie Kill Walk Away”, an action-packed thriller about two teenagers racing to save the world from a deadly bioweapon.

During the day Matt also presented to the Geography students in Years 10-13. Through his extensive adventure travel he has witnessed first hand the effects of climate change and the growth of eco-tourism in the Himalayas over the past 20 years and this led to a really interesting talk. He was also able to link his experience in the extreme environment of Antarctica. He discussed “The Death Zone”, his autobiographical account of his summit of Everest via the treacherous North Face during the most devastating killer storm ever to hit the mountain and one that left eight people dead.

BHGS was fortunate to host such a wonderfully engaging and inspiring speaker. Matt Dickinson – a true action-hero!

Some of the feedback from the girls of the day: “I think he has inspired many people to accomplish their dreams, but to also have a plan. He has influenced me to make the most of life and to take any possible chances that you are given.” Lotty

“Matt Dickinson’s chat was gripping and informative, he balanced his time between his books and his amazing adventure stories. He interacted with the audience, whilst telling clever jokes and explaining his stories in good detail.” Amelie

“Matt was funny and intriguing. He had many adventures in his past and inpsired many people, me included.” Roxy

“I very much enjoyed Matt’s talk as it made me laugh, however at the same time it taught me many things and inspired me.” Cecile
