Back to Back Careers Events for Key Stage 3

April 3, 2025/in Careers, General News/by BHGS

Year 8 and Year 9 engage in Careers events: Career Skills Days and our annual Work Shadowing

“Back to back” events were co-ordinated at the end of term for Careers with our Year 8 Work Shadowing Day and the Year 9 engaging in a Career Skills morning with local businesses on Monday 31 March.

Year 8 were out and about in the local business communities enjoying seeing what their relatives do for a living. Most joined their family to see what they got up to in their working days. This is an important introduction to the world of work for our pupils as they see the shape of a working day and experience the different types of roles in the outside world.

In Life Skills lessons and via Careers assemblies, they are encouraged to think about the transferable skills seen in the workplace and how they can develop them. They are also tasked on asking some interesting questions of their hosts, from ‘why did you choose this career’ to top tips for working effectively in a workplace.

While Year 8 were out and about, Year 9 were treated to some local business visitors. We ran a Careers Skills conference for the morning at school. Business visitors included: Tesco, Computacenter, Roche, Paypoint and they looked at how to apply for roles for example what a CV is and an interview. They also focused on key skills they look for in employees such as communication and team working. Presentations and interactive tasks were the order of the day. A busy time for career skills building!

UCAS Discovery Day

UCAS Discovery Day Conference: exploring the next steps

The Sixth form team arranged the annual drive up to the EXCEL centre in London for our Year 12s just before Easter. This is a large conference event for all university and apprenticeship offerings for 18+. Our Sixth form, along with the Consortium schools, spent the morning understanding the degree course options and chatting with different universities and course providers for different subject areas. Our Year 12s got a real taste of what is available to them, with great timing on this event to kick start considering their options going into Year 13. The event also reminded the students that the University Open Day season starts in early Summer through to the Autumn term.

Alumni are back to illuminate Y12 career path

March 15, 2025/in Alumni, Careers, General News/by BHGS

Bishop’s Alumni and Industry Specialists Illuminate Career Paths for Year 12 Students in a Career Sector Morning

As part of the Year 12 Careers Programme, we were thrilled to welcome back a group of our talented former Bishop’s students who are now in successful careers, along with other industry specialists, to share their knowledge and insights during a Sector Morning.

Our alumni community is diverse, with former students excelling in fields ranging from pharmaceuticals and hospitality to media and finance. The event provided a unique opportunity for our current students to engage with professionals who have walked the same halls and are now thriving in their respective careers.

An Informal, Insightful Session

The morning was designed as an informal conversation carousel, where alumni rotated through groups of students, explaining their career paths and offering invaluable advice on how to break into various key sectors. It was a collaborative, engaging format that encouraged open dialogue and allowed students to ask questions and gain practical tips directly from those who had once been in their shoes.

Career Tips and Essential Skills

A key part of the event was the advice shared by our alumni on the skills that helped them succeed and ‘what they wish they’d been told’ when they were in school. This candid exchange was not only insightful but also served as an inspiration for students, helping them to better understand the steps they can take now to shape their own career journeys.

Welcoming Alumni Back into the Bishop’s Family

We are always excited to reconnect with our alumni and celebrate their achievements. It is incredibly rewarding to see former students return to Bishop’s to inspire and guide the next generation. Our alumni are a vital part of our school community, and their success stories motivate our students to dream big and aim high.

If you are an alumni and would like to get involved in future school events or contribute to our Careers Programme, we’d love to hear from you! Please contact Mrs Higgins, Head of Careers (jhiggins@bishophatfield.herts.sch.uk), or join our digital Future First Hub here: https://www.futurefirsthub.org.uk/register/bishophatfield

We look forward to welcoming even more alumni back into the Bishop’s family and continuing to foster strong connections that help our students thrive!

Year 12 Interview Practice for the Real World

March 15, 2025/in Careers, General News/by BHGS

Year 12 Practise for Interviews and Assessment Centres

At Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School, we believe that practice makes perfect and this month, our sixth formers had the opportunity to put this into action during our annual Mock Interview and Mock Assessment Centre events, which are an integral part of the Year 12 Careers Programme. These key events are designed to help our sixth formers develop crucial communication skills and gain confidence as they prepare for the world of work.

Mock Interviews: Real-World Experience

This year, we welcomed over a dozen local businesses and 25+ interviewers from local companies such as Paypoint, Computacenter, Roche, Barclays, Crane and Staples and many more. This event is a students’ favourite in the calendar as they get to practice their interview techniques, receive instant feedback, and gain insights into how to sharpen their communication skills in a professional setting.

Mock Assessment Centre: Building Key Skills

In partnership with our cornerstone employer Computacenter, we also ran a Mock Assessment Centre, where students participated in simulated exercises focused on teamwork, creativity, communication, and problem-solving—skills essential for real-world job selection processes.

Both events helped our Year 12 students develop and refine the skills they need to succeed in future job applications and interviews. We are grateful to all the above employers who contributed to these valuable experiences and look forward to continuing to support our students’ career development.

We Can Be … Empowered

February 27, 2025/in Careers, General News/by BHGS

The annual careers conference celebrating and encouraging Women in The City.

The City of London is focused on crashing through the glass ceiling on City careers for young women. The annual London careers convention celebrating and promoting women in City careers has doubled in size and impact – covering more businesses and two conference facilities in the esteemed Guildhall. As part of our Careers Programme, our group of Year 12 students visited the conference and had an informative and interesting afternoon at an event devoted to showcasing career options in banking, insurance through to consultancy. Inspirational entrepreneurs hosted a business game and Q&A on career paths. Also, our Year 12s enjoyed an interactive morning at a host law firm Venner Shipley in Aldersgate. The international law firm specialises in Intellectual Property and our pupils enjoyed doing interactive tasks based on cases to do with copyright in pop music and patent disputes in festival merchandise. The skills of research, analysis, debate and communication were needed to come up with a legal judgement!

The overall message was to take risks and be empowered in your career and that it is part of your “journey”!

The day was topped off by a range of free sweet and savoury treats from our linked corporate – always a winner!

Apprenticeships Explained

February 13, 2025/in Careers, General News/by BHGS

Year 7 to 11 pupils get presented with an overview of the range of Apprenticeships and opportunities

Options, Options, Options! At school, we are tasked with developing rounded young people with academic qualification and transferable skills to head off to the outside world. Knowing their options is a critical role of Careers in school – whether it be further education options or early employment via the government backed Apprenticeship schemes. Our KS4 and KS5 pupils had a series of “Apprenticeships Explained” assemblies this term from Ask Apprenticeships. The presentations were delivered to demystify the growing network of apprenticeships available from those appropriate for post-16, right the way through to Masters equivalents. Giving the chance to stay in education while gaining an income! The number and range of employers, and now functions, that you can apply for is growing every year. There are now legal and teaching apprenticeships coming online, with the medical world also being reviewed for apprenticeships by our government.

Our role is to explain the benefits of these schemes – that feature on-the-job training with educational qualifications at all levels – and to add them to the “mix” for our pupils to make the right choice for them.

Information for parents and carers on Apprenticeships can be found at Ask Apprenticeships website and the government website: https://www.careersandenterprise.co.uk/the-ask-programme/ https://www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship

Hertfordshire’s Employment Showcased

February 7, 2025/in Careers, General News/by BHGS

Generation Welwyn Hatfield Careers Conference – An annual event for our Year 11s

Crossroads and decisions are hard for all of us. For our Year 11s embarking on the next stage of their journey, help was at hand with the annual Generation Welwyn Hatfield Careers Conference at the Hatfield Fielder Centre. This event showcases a wealth of businesses and post-16 options for our young people in Hertfordshire. A keen group of Year 11s and some Year 12s attended last Friday for a busy morning of networking! Businesses such as Barclays, Roche, Morgan Sindall, Sky Studios and even our local Baker Simmons had stalls explaining the range of opportunities for employment available in our county. Our pupils were commented on being engaged and motivated -many asking for placements in local businesses as part of our Work Experience programme! Jobs ranged from sports scientists to emergency services – with all aspects of the roles explained by those currently employed in all the local sectors. A few of our pupils even got a great feel for the jobs – some practically so – like the fire service!

Debating Historians develop curiosity and confidence skills

January 20, 2025/in Careers, General News/by BHGS

Parallel History Debaters – Year 9 and Year 12 take on conflict history debate subjects.

To develop historical and public speaking skills our Parallel Histories Debating club delivered two debates this term on the history of the Balfour Declaration and the foundations of the Palestine-Israel story. As Historians it is always key to understand the starting point of key events that are still current politically today – and our Year 9s and Year 12s participated in a UK wide debate series online over the last half term to explore these subjects. Our Year 12 debaters “cut their teeth” on a debate on the importance of Churchill earlier in the term; and both year groups tackled the Balfour Declaration with perception and sensitivity – allowing them to think critically, analyse and debate contested histories. Our pupils all got great feedback from the organisers for convincing arguments and effective presentations – great skills for their futures! We have further debates planned about US Civil rights for both teams and our new Year 10 group.

Year 10 Cisco Careers Experience

December 2, 2024/in Careers, General News/by BHGS

A careers trip to a software developer inspired students with insights into coding and the tech industry.

This term, students visited the digital communication technology giant Cisco for an immersive experience, beginning with a tour of the business to learn about its innovative projects and workplace culture. They explored the role of programmers, gaining insight into coding, problem-solving, and the tech industry. The visit included an engaging workshop on integrating 5G technology with household appliances and computer devices, highlighting how cutting-edge technology improves everyday life. Students left with a deeper understanding of programming careers and the exciting potential of future technologies.

Year 13 A-Level lawyers appear at St Albans Crown Court

September 24, 2024/in Careers, General News/by BHGS

Two groups of Year 13 A-Level Law students took part in trips to St Albans Crown Court this half term.

Two groups of Year 13 A-Level Law students took part in trips to St Albans Crown Court this half term. We were welcomed by court officials, who gave an introductory talk and answered questions from the students. Both groups were then treated to a Q and A session with a judge, giving a fascinating insight into their careers as barristers and what made them decide to become a Crown Court judge.

Further highlights for the 30 students included hearing legal arguments between the barristers acting for the Crown Prosecution Service and for the defendants. One group saw a jury in action and the other saw a whole sentencing hearing, resulting in a custodial sentence for the defendant. Having seen the practical application of the law to real people, Year 13 came back with renewed understanding of, and enthusiasm for, the study of criminal law.
