CleanUpHatfield Litter Pick – October 2019

September 30, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Happy faces at ‘CleanUpHatfield’ event!

On Monday the 30th September 2019, our Save the World Club took part in the CleanUpHatfield event. Students from years 7-11 got involved as we wanted to help clean up the environment and make our local area look nicer. We went outside after school with litter pickers and gloves to clean up litter from Woods Avenue. You wouldn’t believe how much there was! We did this for an hour and in the end we collected three bags full of rubbish, including a Nike slider, beer cans and lots of crisp and sweet wrappers! It’s important to go litter picking to help our area become cleaner and to also help the environment because animals eat the rubbish that we discard on the floor.

Women in STEM at Sandhurst

September 26, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Inspiring activities engaged us all

On Thursday 26th September 2019, 15 Year 10 students visited Sandhurst to discover more about careers and opportunities for women in STEM. When we first arrived we were given an information pack about career pathways in STEM industries and were greeted by the army personnel. During the event we participated in a workshop with Xylem, a company that enables their clients worldwide to transport, treat and test water. We learnt about how we are able to access water in our homes and the process of treating and cleaning water. We then went on to take part in an experiment where we tested samples of water to find out the pH, clarity and how much oxygen it contained.

We also had the opportunity to visit stalls, exhibits and take part in many fun activities. For example, I enjoyed visiting many Military stalls where there were teaching us about the machinery, equipment and how it is used. I was especially interested in the Engineering exhibition, where we investigated Virtual Reality to investigate a fictional landscape.

I found the event extremely inspiring and informative, and it has certainly made me think about the wider application of science and maths in an engineering environment. I had the opportunity to discuss careers with a range of different business leaders and was inspired by women who have made it to the top of their field. I would like to thank Sandhurst for hosting the event, and all of the businesses for taking tie to help us understand more about the potential of STEM subjects.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award – Bronze Expedition 2019

September 22, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Teamwork shines through on the DofE Bronze Expedition

Following many months of training, planning and preparation, fifty girls from Year 10 set out to navigate their way around the beautiful sunny Hertfordshire countryside on their Bronze expedition. Groups were supported by staff and volunteers, who ensured that they set off properly equipped and ready for the challenge. Each group walked a total of 30km carrying all of their kit over the course of the weekend; camping overnight, pitching their tents, cooking their planned meals on Trangia stoves and listening to the sounds of Muntjac deer, owls and foxes in the night. An evening campfire was enjoyed by all, and spirits remained high despite some rain on Sunday morning. All groups demonstrated great determination, supporting each other and working together to achieve the expedition section. This, combined with their successes at volunteering, physical activity ad developing skills, means that the girls have successfully achieved their Bronze Award. Huge congratulations to all!

Sunny Days at Summer School

September 4, 2019/in General News/by BHGS

Twenty girls attended Summer School in August.

We welcomed twenty girls to our Summer School in August where we had a great time getting to know each other before the start of year 7.

On Monday the girls took part in a treasure trail around the school building helping them to become familiar with the school and working in teams. On Tuesday we took part in Drama and art activities that all related to Matilda by Roald Dahl. The girls created freeze frames of important scenes from the story and made wooden spoon puppets of characters from the books. We walked to Hatfield House park farm on Wednesday and enjoyed a day with the animals in the sunshine before playing in the Bloody Hollow play area. On Thursday the girls asked lots of questions about being a pupil at Bishop’s and we watched the film version of Matilda. On Friday we made fruit kebabs, taking the time to try new flavours and design our own combinations of fruit on our skewers.

Throughout the week we played lots of ‘getting to know you’ games as well as some very competitive games of bench ball and rounders. We also tried various mindfulness techniques such as yoga and meditation.

It was lovely to see all of the girls grow in confidence over the course of the week and the beginnings of some wonderful friendships. We look forward to seeing all of the girls at the start of term in September!
