7 Seacole adopt a Giant Panda!

March 31, 2022/in General News, House Seacole/by BHGS

7 Seacole have got their fundraising heads together and chosen to raise money for a good cause by adopting a Giant Panda! They came up with the idea and even organised the fundraising themselves.

7 Seacole have got their fundraising heads together and chosen to raise money for a good cause by adopting a Giant Panda! They came up with the idea and have organised the fundraising themselves.

We would like to give you some information on how much this will help protect them. It is estimated that around 1,860 giant pandas remain in the world today. We, at Bishop’s, are helping to protect these iconic creatures by taking the initiative of adopting. By doing so, we will not only help capitalise projects to work with more local communities, monitor giant pandas signals and protect their habitat but also essentially the other necessary work around the world. Even though pandas are declared to not be extinct now, they still are threatened and we should do something to stop this. We have decided to adopt the panda from the WWF and it is a great organisation that takes care of other animals too.

Great things about giant pandas: Giant pandas live in the mountain forests of the centre of Chinese territories of Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu. Ninety-nine percent of the Giant pandas’ diet is vegetarian, and contains different types of bamboo. Adult giant pandas don’t socialise but they do confer through calls and scent markings. Giant pandas are the most recognisable and the rarest members of the bear family. They spend 10-16 hours a day feeding on different types of bamboo. They are also very courageous because they learn how to climb trees at an early age of 5 months! Giant pandas are also called Ailuropoda melanoleuca.

What we can do (Our Aims): – Increasing the panda habitats under legal protection. – Creating green corridors to link isolated pandas. – Patrolling against poaching, illegal logging, and encroachment. – Building local capacities for nature reserve management.

Why Pandas? Pandas are doing a very influential job in our world, they spread seeds around the mountains of China which help vegetation to bloom. So by doing this we are guarding our environment.

Well done, 7 Seacole!

The Great Bishop’s Exhibition

March 31, 2022/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Year 8 historians re-create the Great Exhibition

Our Year 8 Historians were given an assessment with a difference when they were asked to form a team and take part in the Great Exhibition. The pupils had been studying the British Empire and Victorian England so were asked to construct a stall to display the positives and negatives of the British Empire on their allocated country. All were working as a team to develop communications and present creatively to the rest of the class. The stalls had to have information and interesting and engaging things to do to attract visitors to what their countries had to offer during Victorian England. The countries ranged from India, Jamaica, Australia to Ireland. As it was an assessment Year 8 were being peer assessed on creativity as well as teacher reviewed on their writing and stall presentation.

We had cakes galore and food from around the world. There were games to play, using fun facts and there were outfits and sources from the Victorian age on show. The event was enjoyed by all – and had good results for the pupils. One student was heard say: “This is probably one of the most fun assessments I have ever had”! Here are some of the creative displays that were on offer in the Great Bishop’s Exhibition.

A Visit to Hogwarts

March 29, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

120 Year 9 Pupils are taken to The Making of Harry Potter

On Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th March, we took 120 pupils to The Making of Harry Potter at Leavesden as part of their English studies. We took part in an hour workshop, led by the onsite educational team, that focused on narrative story telling and to shape a screen play. All of this will help them with their own story telling in school. After that, we all went around the full tour and visited Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, Gringotts Bank and many pupils had photographs taken flying on broom sticks and we all enjoyed a visit to the shop.

Sixth Form Biodiversity Field Trip

March 24, 2022/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Year 13 Biologists enjoy the sunshine and explore the Surrey countryside studying biodiversity, collecting data and analysing their results.

After a long Covid break with no trips, we were at last able to go to Surrey on a Biology Field Trip. We went to the Field Studies Council centre, Juniper Hall in Surrey. On our first day at Juniper Hall we focused on biodiversity, learning about Simpsons Index of Biodiversity and how it takes into account both species richness and species evenness. We took a scenic walk up a big hill to the coppiced and mature woodland and used random sampling techniques, placing our quadrants at multiple randomly generated coordinates, to identify the number and proportions of different plant species present in each woodland. We then conducted a statistical test (students t test) to see if the difference in species diversity between the two woodlands was significant. We also made humane mammal traps which we hid in the woods overnight, and in the morning we collected them to get an idea of the population size of these mammals in that area. We managed to catch one mouse, which soon escaped through a hole in the bag it was in! Our second day was wading around in a local river and studying how abiotic factors can affect the biodiversity of invertebrate species. Finally we used the capture, mark, release, recapture method with snails to estimate the local population. It was great fun and we learnt a lot of biology and statistics.

Year 9 Career Skills Day

March 18, 2022/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Local business community helps Year 9 pupils develop their life and career skills

It was Careers Skills and Practice Day at Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School on Thursday 24th March 2022

Our Year 9 pupils spent the day exploring careers with a variety of local businesses, as BHGS hosted an array of local employers such as Tesco and Roche, along with Morgan Sindall and PayPoint, CMR Recruitment and our own school counsellor. These businesses provided our pupils with a series of interactive and engaging sessions to help them develop skills fit for the workplace.

The focus was placed on developing our pupils’ life and career skills. Pupils took part in a personality quiz with our recruitment specialist and learnt to build their ‘brand’ through a session with pharmaceutical company Roche. The day stretched from building transferable skills which retailer Tesco coordinated in a teamwork and communication session involving bananas (!), through to practical project management with Morgan Sindall and some practical advice on what makes a good interview from our Finance company partner PayPoint.

Year 12 students dropped in at lunchtime to build their ‘network’ in preparation for their work experience programme in July.

The breadth of skills and types of employers made it an invaluable experience for our pupils and will hopefully help them in their career journey.

Science Spectacular enthrals year 8 scientists

March 18, 2022/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Year 8 scientists enjoyed a plethora of science activities at the Science Spectacular event as part of British Science Week

On Friday the 18th March, we had our science lesson in the school hall and our science teachers demonstrated lots of different experiments as well as getting us to participate and compete with each other. We started with a house competition to make the neatest density column using different coloured water and sugar mixes that had different densities. This is an experiment we could do at home. We had one of the schools governors, Professor Adrian Boswood, judging the best column. We saw how to make fake blood and some students also made ice cream but not putting it in the freezer, it went solid when dry ice was added. We had another house competition to test our lung capacity by timing how quickly we could turn a pH indicator from pink to colourless, I came second! We finished the event with some very loud rocket launches, not really rockets but small plastic bottles that had methane and oxygen in them. We all had great fun and learnt a lot about different parts of science as well as gaining lots of house points.

Bath bombs bubble and fizz for year 9

March 16, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

Year 9 scientists enjoyed making bath bombs as part of British Science Week

Our science lesson on Wednesday was in the main hall making bath bombs! We each created a bath bomb of different colours using sodium bicarbonate, citric acid and oil. We then had a competition to see which bath bomb dissolved the fastest in the ‘bath’ that the sixth form biologists had set up for us. We learnt about the chemistry behind bath bombs, the fact that it is a neutralisation reaction and the reaction is very endothermic. It was great fun and the winners received an Easter egg as a prize!

Year 8 Work Shadowing Day

March 16, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

Year 8 develop their career skills with their first work shadowing experience

The whole of Year 8 were out on their Work Shadowing Day on 17th March. As part of developing their career skills, they had to first use their network to find a work placement. They then had to plan and prepare for the day and decide on key questions to ask. Finally, on the 17th March, they had to turn up – on time – suitably keen and “bushy tailed” for their first experience of the Workplace.

The range of work environments experienced by Year 8 was spectacular! Pupils managed to secure placements in nurseries, corporates, cafés, the NHS, radio stations, construction companies, estate agents, Network Rail, beauticians, universities; even in a puppet factory was the scene of some of our keen new workers!

Many pupils accompanied their parents, close family friends and relatives to their places of work – and some even managed to get a lovely “working lunch” !

The objective was to understand the place of work, try out the working day and to find out about different roles – from university lecturer and marketing manager to café owner. They even managed to ask a few questions like ” what do you do Dad/Mum?”

Year 8 arrived back at school the next day full of their exciting adventures out in the “real world”.

Can War Be Just?

March 15, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

Year 10 RE Conference on War and Peace

Year 10 were off timetable all day on Tuesday 15th March 2022 as they were taking part in the second RE Conference looking at religious views on War and Peace. We started the day thinking about ‘What is the need for war?’ and ‘Why is there war between countries of the same faith?’. The students found that, after some research and discussion, their views changed as they developed a deeper understanding of a variety of perspectives and opinions. The staff leading the sessions were impressed at the mature and sensible way that the students approached this topic. This led to some high quality debate.

Students worked on their own group presentations to present to their peers. One presentation per form was chosen to present to the whole year group at the end of the day in the school Hall.

Thank you to all the staff who helped to deliver the Conference.
