House Form Challenge – 4 Week Marathon

April 2, 2025/in General News, House Austen, House Franklin, House Hadid, House Parr, House Seacole/by BHGS

First House Form Challenge run by Bishop’s Sixth Formers

Our creative and innovative Sixth form team have been developing their leadership skills by devising, communicating and running our first ever House Form Challenge this month.

For four Thursday Registrations across last term, each House fielded a team for an external activity; or did a whole Form activity across Years 7-10.

The Challenges were all fun activities from scoring basketball hoops against each other to racing to blow Maltesers across the sports hall! Alternate weeks saw our Forms being put through their paces – with whole Form activities ranging from the fastest to say the alphabet backwards to naming the most countries!

This was a House Challenge so was run by a cross-House Sixth form team and adjudicated by our Head of Enrichment, Mrs Jackson.

Tension was heightened by keeping the results secret – with just a mid-way result reveal!

The final week saw competition “hotting up” and a finale with Heads of House and Sixth Form teams going head to head on a fun obstacle course!

The triumphant House overall was Seacole – followed by Austen, Parr, Hadid and Franklin. Cross House competition is alive and kicking at Bishop’s and the House Form Challenge is gearing up the Houses for the last term of events leading to a 2025 House Winner!

Franklin student flourishes at Festival of Dance

April 1, 2025/in General News, House Franklin/by BHGS

Siahra E in 10 Franklin competed at the UDO Dance Festival, coming first with her dance team in the musical theatre category

Franklin are very proud of Siahra E who successfully juggles a busy dance schedule with her school work and enrichment activities. Siahra attended the UDO British Dance Festival with her dance school on 21st-22nd March . This competition is advertised as the greatest platform to showcase dancing talents in Britain. ‘It was nerve-racking but exciting and inspirational’ states Siahra. ‘We competed in the intermediate musical theatre category and came first as well as coming second in the under-18 intermediate street dance group’. Siahra has worked hard to get back to full dance fitness after damaging her finger during a school netball match which caused her to take a long time out from training. Well done to Siahra and all those who competed in the Dance Festival.

Year 10 Great Debate about TikTok

February 11, 2024/in General News, House Franklin/by BHGS

Year 10 teams debated whether TikTok should have an age restriction of 18 plus as part of a literacy house competition.

Two teams from each house debated whether TikTok should be restricted to age 18 and above, organised by the literacy team at Bishop’s. Each team researched their point of view and delivered confident and forceful facts and opinions. Staff joined in with some teams to help support their arguments. Teams from different houses went against each other and the Franklin teams were the winners, closely followed by Parr. It was great to see year 10 students demonstrating great oracy skills and debating with determination and aplomb. Well done to all the participants!

Ready Steady Cook with House Franklin

January 31, 2024/in General News, House Franklin/by BHGS

Bringing together staff and students in a fun cooking showdown, the Staff vs. Pupil Ready Steady Cook Challenge!

At Bishops we recently hosted a fun, lively but challenging lunch time House event that brought together staff and students in a fun and competitive atmosphere: the Staff vs. Pupil Cook-Off! Modelled after the popular television show ‘Ready Steady Cook,’ our cook-off challenged our Year 10 Franklin Form Tutor, Mr. Goodall and Mrs. Wright, our Food teacher, against two of his form members, Willow W and Imogen W, challenging them to create delicious dishes using a selection of mystery ingredients. With only a limited amount of time on the clock, teamwork and quick thinking were essential for success.

From a variety of different ingredients, the two teams had to think on their feet to incorporate them into their dishes. As the clock ticked towards the end, Mr Goodall showed his creative cooking skills while the students were confident they would beat Mr Goodall and Mrs Wright in this challenge. The food hall buzzed with energy as teams rushed to put the finishing touches on their creations. Miss Jackson, Mrs Alliot and Mrs Mitchell; esteemed members of the school community evaluated each dish based on taste, creativity, and teamwork. But there could only be one winner and the students took victory this year. Well done Willow W and Imogen W.

Franklin wins the Y7 House Performance Poetry Competition

November 30, 2023/in General News, Home Page, House Franklin/by BHGS

Year 7 perform in the finals of the House Performance Poetry Competition

On Tuesday 28th November, Year 7 gathered in the hall to watch the finals of the House Performance Poetry Competition. Year 7 pupils have been learning about performance poetry in their English lessons. Each student chose a poem to perform in front of their class, and then 2 finalists were chosen to represent each form in the final. The final took place on Tuesday in front of the whole of Year 7, and 3 judges.

There were a wide range of different poems presented by our 10 finalists and the judges were impressed by the confidence and enthusiasm with which students performed their poems. Many of them had not only learnt their poems off by heart, but also thoroughly embraced the concept of performance poetry, acting out their poems enthusiastically and confidently with the aid of props and fellow form members. It was also lovely to see how many pupils had written their own poems, including one poem which was written in Urdu.

Evie M (7Fr) was the overall winner with her dramatic performance of ‘Strict’ by Michael Rosen. In second place was Bria B (7Se) with another Michael Rosen poem, ‘The Car Trip’. In third place was Mia O (7Pa) who performed Maya Angelou’s poem ‘Still I Rise’. Franklin therefore won 100 house points, with Seacole winning 50 points and Parr winning 25. All individual finalists were also awarded 5 house points for representing their form.

Congratulations to the 10 girls who took part. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all members of the audience.

You can listen to their performances here:

Year 7 gave their all in the finals of the House Performance Poetry Competition

On Thursday 24th November Year 7 gathered in the hall to watch the finals of the House Performance Poetry Competition.

For the last two weeks pupils have been learning about performance poetry in their English lessons and practising and refining their skills. On Thursday two finalists from each form performed their poems in front of the whole of Year 7, and a panel of judges.

The event started with a guest performance from one of our drama teachers, Mr Kench, before our finalists eventually took to the stage. It takes a lot of courage to stand up in front of such a large audience, and the judges were impressed by just how well ALL of the finalists performed. Many of them had not only learnt their poems off by heart, but also thoroughly embraced the concept of performance poetry, acting out their poems enthusiastically and confidently with the aid of the occasional prop. It was also lovely to see how many pupils had written their own poems.

Special mention must go to our three winners. Ebun E (7Au) was the overall winner with her dramatic reading of ‘The Poem of Life’. In second place was Lola C (7Fr) with AA Milne’s poem ‘The King’s Breakfast’. In third place was Ruby E (7Fr) with Michael Rosen’s poem ‘No Breathing’. This meant that Austen won 100 house points, with Franklin winning a total of 75 house points for their second and third place results. All individual finalists were also awarded 5 house points for representing their form.

You can listen to their performances here:

Year 7 Poetry Competition 2022 – 1 Ebun E

Year 7 Poetry Competition 2022 – 2 Lola C

Year 7 Poetry Competition 2022 – 3 Ruby E

Congratulations to all the girls who took part.

Franklin celebrates its 2022 House Competition win

September 6, 2022/in General News, House Franklin/by BHGS

Franklin enjoyed a fun day of celebrations to mark their first House of the year win

Franklin Celebration was more than a perfect way to end the year in which everyone had done their very best.

Within a second of being on the field, everyone was laughing, smiling, dancing and singing the day through the activities. These activities included an inflatable obstacle course, which seemed to be everyone’s favourite, a basketball hoop and an inflatable (human) hungry hippo. We had some great competition between friends! It ended with the loudest of activities: a disco of pure excitement as everyone was singing and dancing. The day was filled with fun as we enjoyed a friendship photobooth, a staff versus students game of rounders and some delicious pizza! Do you need a better incentive to try and win next year?!

New Inter-House Football

March 2, 2022/in General News, House Franklin, House Parr, House Seacole/by BHGS

First Ever KS3 Inter House Football Tournament at BHGS

During the first two weeks of March, the PE department ran the first ever KS3 Inter House Football tournament at BHGS. Football has only been a permanent fixture on our curriculum for the last 2 years and this was the first time the Inter House Football tournament had been able to take place. Pupils in Years 7 and 8 had to select a team of 7 (including a goalie) on each side of their PE year groups whilst Year 9 pupils had to select a team of 9 players (including a goalie). The pupils had to battle with some typically poor weather for March but that did not deter their spirits and positive attitude to put into practice what they had been working on in their PE lessons.

Year 7 results – Thursday half (1st – 5th place) 1st 7 Franklin 2nd 7 Parr 3rd 7 Seacole 4th 7 Hadid 5th 7 Austen

A Pudding Fit for the Queen

February 10, 2022/in General News, House Franklin/by BHGS

Bishop’s pupils put their baking skills to the test for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Twelve creative Bishop’s cooks took part in a House competition linked to ‘The Platinum Pudding Competition’ run by Fortnum & Mason to create a pudding fit for the Queen. The entries were spectacular and Mrs Veale and Mrs Wright were impressed by the effort that had gone into their original dessert/cake ideas.

The judging criteria were: • It Tastes Just Right • Perfect for Home Bakers • A Memorable Story • Fit for The Queen

Everyone who took part in the house competition was encouraged to also enter the national competition which closed on 4th February. For the national competition, the winner’s name will be seen on the pudding which will either be sold in Fortnum’s or online with all profits going to charity. The winner will get a trophy, afternoon tea, a £500 gift voucher and hamper. There will be two runners up prizes of hampers. The winning recipe will also be gifted to The Queen and the public as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Fortnum & Mason are working in partnership with The Big Jubilee Lunch who will encourage people to make the recipe at home to enjoy with family, friends, and their local community.

Even more importantly, there were over 200 BHGS House points on offer. It was very hard to decide but Mr Wood, Mrs Veale and Mrs Wright eventually identified the winners as:

In first place: Willow Wright (Franklin) 2nd place: Connie Dykes (Parr) 3rd place: Keira Marshment (Seacole) 4th place: Ruby Law & Zahra Landau (Seacole) 5th place: Amelia Beachey (Hadid) Everyone who took part received 3 house points for their time, effort and commitment.

There are 3 rounds of judging in the national competition, culminating in a final on the week commencing 14th March when the five finalists will be invited to Fortnum & Mason in Piccadilly, London to bake their recipe for the judging panel. We will be waiting with bated breath to discover whether one of our pupils makes it that far!

Good luck in the national competition, everyone!

Mrs Veale
