Year 12 try out life as international lawyers

April 29, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

Students studying A-Level Law visit the offices of top international law firm, Clifford Chance.

On Wednesday 27th April 31 A Level Law students ventured into London to Canary Wharf to the offices of international law firm, Clifford Chance. The morning spent at these impressive offices included a talk by the head of Graduate Recruitment and a discussion of the skills and characteristics that employers are looking for. This included resilience, enthusiasm and the importance of building networks and being your authentic self.

The students then participated in a careers carousel where they had the chance to interview trainee solicitors from Clifford Chance about their current roles and how they got there. This was a chance to ask questions about a legal career and appreciate the many different options for study prior to becoming a lawyer, including not only a law degree but degrees in subjects as diverse as ancient history and physics. The students then enjoyed a light lunch in the Clifford Chance offices overlooking the Thames.

The Magic of Magnetism in Physics week

April 28, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

A variety of magnet tricks were on display as part of Physics Week at Bishop’s

During Physics Week, we had the chance to play around with various magnetic tricks. The one that captivated me was the balancing coins. We suspended a tower of coins underneath a strong magnet, the coins became magnetized and stuck to each other, and the magnet kept the column still, even against the force of gravity. Another display was the homopolar train. Magnets are placed at either end of a battery and pushed into a long copper coil. The magnets connect with the copper coils creating a circuit. The coils become magnetised pushing and pulling the battery through the long length of coil! All displays were a great visual way of showing how important physics and magnets are in technology and our every day lives. A fascinating set of activities for Physics Week!

Year 7 Scientists Explore the Universe at the National Space Centre

April 27, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

Year 7 scientists enjoy a day of space exploration at the National Space Centre, as part of Bishop’s Physics Week.

On Tuesday the 26th April, we went to the National Space Centre in Leicester. We learnt about the training required by astronauts and saw some of the space suits from previous missions including the suit worn by Tim Peake. We explored the planets in our universe in the interactive planetarium and felt what it was like to be in space! We then explored the displays, including the 42-metre-high Rocket Tower that has a big rocket collection. The Into Space gallery shows replicas of part of the International Space Station showing us how you go to the toilet in space! We could also pretend we were broadcasters and record ourselves discussing climate change and pollution on earth. It was a great day out and we learnt a lot about our planet, space and space travel.

Bishop’s go bananas with careers

April 26, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

Year 9 win Tesco’s vouchers in Career Skills Competition

Back in March, Year 9 enjoyed the expertise of some of our local large and small businesses during a Career Skills Day. The skills learnt and practiced ranged from building that first CV to personality questionnaires and thinking about the skills needed in interviews. One of our guest businesses, Tesco, ran a session on logistics – “Go Bananas Supply Chain Workshop”. There were bananas everywhere that day in Bishop’s! Tesco ran this as a competition and the results are now in! The team Bananarama from 9 Hadid came up with the highest number of jobs related to a banana… the mind boggles! They found 205 jobs! Tesco provided prizes of £5 gift vouchers. Sam Sullivan of Tesco commented ” We had a great day with your fantastic students – they really engaged in all the activities. Enthusiasm and a “can do ” attitude is great to see in Year 9.”

Well done to the following pupils: Isobel R, Anjali P, Daniella O, Jayla H, Tenzin Y, Isabelle T, Chloe K, Chloe A, Rihanna K, Amelia A, Tegan J, Ellie S, Evie J.

Look out for the Tesco team as they come back in June to deliver a Year 7 workshop with Bishop’s!

Year 8 Maths Team Challenge

April 25, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

Two Year 8 teams compete against 20 schools in Hertfordshire

On Monday 25th April, 8 of our Year 8 pupils were split into 2 teams to participate in a Maths Team Challenge competition against other secondary schools in Hertfordshire. Just like last year, the event was run online and the pupils competed in 4 rounds; 2 general knowledge rounds, a memory round (where 2 competitors had to draw a poster based off a description given from the other 2 on the team) and an estimation round.

Both teams gave an excellent performance and Team A (The Four Math-keteers) came 5th. Team B (Square Root to Success) came 7th. The year 8 competitors were: Nathalie A, Amelia B, Arabella A and Maahi P in team A. Lilly-Jade T, Em W, Jiya P and Alysha J in team B. Both teams did an excellent job and the Maths department is very proud and impressed with their efforts.

Unfortunately we didn’t make it to the final this year but there’s always next year!

Year 12 Geographers in Dorset

April 22, 2022/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Year 12 geographers visit Dorset to collect data for their NEA.

In early April, Year 12 geographers travelled down to Swanage, Dorset to collect data for their individual NEA investigations. We had a wonderful 4 days visiting Swanage beach, Chesil Beach, Lulworth Cove, Weymouth and Studland Bay. Students worked together to collect large samples of data, including measuring pebble size and shape, beach profiles, assessing environmental quality at 8 different beaches to investigate the changing beach characteristics along the Dorset Coast. At Studland Bay, students collected data to assess how closely it followed the theoretical theory of plant succession on sand dunes – measuring soil Ph, species diversity, plant height and sand dune profiles. We self catered at Lulworth Youth Hostel, working in small teams to cook and prepare meals and wash up – excellent life skills for the future!

Hertfordshire U15’s Badminton Team are National Champions

April 20, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

Anna S (9Au) stars in the Hertfordshire U15 Badminton triumph

On Saturday 17th April, the Hertfordshire U15 Badminton team took part in the National Badminton finals at the impressive Derby Arena, Pride Park.

The event sees counties across England compete in regional groups during the season. Each match is the best of 20 games. The top 8 performing counties from the group stages then meet in the knockout finals. Herts had finished qualifying as number two seeds behind Berkshire, both teams having won all 6 of their regional qualifying matches, Berkshire having slightly better games difference.

The team train out of Herts Sports Village in Hatfield under the guidance of coaches Mike Newlove, Kelly Matthews and Graeme Clarke.

Herts drew Nottinghamshire in the first round of eight. The Herts team were focused and able to find a high playing level early, rolling out comfortable 18-2 winners. In the semi-finals Herts played Surrey who had finished 5th in the group stages and again Herts produced a first-class performance for a straightforward 18-2 win. The final was contested by the top two seeds. Herts had been magnificent all day and kept up their performance levels. After the boys and girls singles and mixed doubles games Herts had already secured the win by beating Berkshire in all to lead 12-0. The boys and girls doubles, although immaterial, were played in good spirit with Herts eventually taking the trophy with an extremely convincing 17-3 victory and therefore crowned as National County champions 2022.

Anna S (9Au), as the only Bishop’s pupil in this squad, performed incredibly well, playing the maximum 12 matches (3 singles, 3 mixed doubles and 6 girls doubles) against opponents from the 3 counties Herts beat on the day. Anna won 11 out of 12 of those, including beating a Nottingham girl in the doubles with her partner Saghana, who is graded the best U15 singles player in the country.

A fantastic achievement for Anna and the team! Congratulations!

If your child takes part in sport outside of school and either individually, or as part of a team, has achieved success, please contact us so that we can include them as part of a news article.

Bishop’s promotes Fairtrade in the community

April 19, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

Save the World Club inspired to create a Fairtrade Display to be put in the community

During Fairtrade Fortnight 2022, Save the World Club were inspired to create a Fairtrade Display to be put in the community. The girls made some beautiful bunting and planned out how to present the display using quotes and resources produced by KS3 students at Bishop’s. The display includes the benefits of fairtrade, examples of fairtrade products, quotes from Year 7 students and the letter STW Club sent to Mr Shapps.

We contacted the Co-op in Hatfield and visited to discuss our idea. Unfortunately the community board had been taken down so we weren’t able to put up the display. However, Chiswell Green Co-op loved the idea and so the posters and information leaflets are on display for the next few weeks. The manager at Cell Barnes Lane, St Albans, saw our display and loved the idea of young people prompting the important message about Fairtrade. He has invited us to put up the display in his store at the end of April!
