Virtual School Water Experiments

March 30, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

Year 8 have been conducting water experiments at home

8 Parr have been studying the Water Cycle as part of their Geography unit on rivers. They were given some ideas for water experiments they could conduct at home.

Here is is Alice Hoxha’s attempt at doing some chromatography. If you want to have a go, visit the YouTube page: ’10 Amazing Experiments With Water’. Just use the link below:

Eggcellent Ecologists enjoy South Downs

March 16, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

Our Year 13 Biologists were able to gain a taste of life as an ecologist

Bishop’s Year 13 Biologists were able to attend the residential field trip to Britain’s leading field study centres, Juniper Hall, just before the COVID-19 enforced lockdown. They measured biodiversity in woodlands and in rock pools. The biologists were able to explore the ecological aspect of biology and gain a taste of a career in this area.

I am so proud of their commitment to their course, enthusiasm on the trip and determination to do well in increasingly difficult circumstances.

Fairtrade Fun!

March 12, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

Fairtrade Fortnight activities in Humanities

Year 7 enjoyed a fun packed Fairtrade Fortnight again this year. They enjoyed understanding the differences between our geography and our culture. Colourful clothing , spicy exotic food and vibrant traditional music and dance was to be seen in the Humanities classrooms last fortnight as the girls experienced Bangladesh life. They enjoyed dressing up, tasting different foods and learning about different languages and culture – even working out their own names in Bangladeshi.

These class activities were further supported by the Fashion Show on Thursday which was widely attended throughout the school and the chocolate wrapper and poetry competitions. All enjoyed thinking about how they were going to change their outlook and behaviour to support Fair Trade and the environment challenges with their pledges. Take a look at the pledges on the Humanities noticeboard to give us all ideas!

Year 10’s Amazing Recycled Dress

March 10, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

Year 10 Art Students Stand Up to Fast Fashion

Year 10 students worked collaboratively to design and create an amazing dress out of recycled materials that would otherwise have gone to landfill. The outfit includes a shoulder bag and beautiful necklace. The dress is on display in the Art display area on the ground floor.

Y7 District Maths Team Challenge

March 10, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

Bishop’s team secure a place in the final

On Tuesday 10th March, Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School hosted the local Year 7 Maths Challenge Heat. There were 9 teams, 3 from Bishop’s, 2 from Stanborough, 1 from The Ridgway, 2 from Townsend and 1 from Katherine Warington. Most of the Bishop’s competitors have been attending the Maths Team Challenge Enrichment club since September 2019, so were well prepared for the types of challenging questions. The pupils used their time before the start of the competition to practise their estimating skills.

There were 4 rounds, 2 general maths questions, 1 estimation round and 1 memory round. Team C came 2nd and team A came 3rd, narrowly beaten by a team from Townsend. Team C have definitely qualified for the final on Thursday 26th March and we need to wait for the other heats to find out if team A qualify as one of the highest finishers.

A few quotes from the competitors: “I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to any new Year 7s!” “I loved working as a team and competing with others” “It was a great team building exercise and coming 2nd was just a bonus”

Well done to all the teams, it was great to have so many enthusiastic Year 7s!

Ethical Fashion Show 2020

March 5, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

Stand Up to Fast Fashion!

An amazing display of the hard work that Bishop’s students invested in designing and creating ethical outfits to ‘Stand Up to Fast Fashion!’, our theme for the Bishop’s International Fairtrade Fortnight Fashion Show. Pupils in years 7-11 were given the challenge to design and create an outfit using recycled clothing for a member of their form to model at the Fantastic Ethical fashion Show on Thursday 5th March. As usual, the students came up with a fantastic range of creative and innovative designs. The whole school was invited to support and cheer the girls as they walked down the cat walk. It was a wonderful community event and a great opportunity to stand in solidarity against Fast Fashion.

The Great Exhibition of 1851

March 2, 2020/in General News/by BHGS

Bringing History to life in the classroom!

As part of their study of the British Empire, Year 8 students re-enacted the Great Exhibition of 1851. Through their presentations on the positive and negative impact of empire on the colonies, they gained a broader understanding of this important period of British and World History. Mr Wood even popped by to see their great work. Well done 8Fr on your informative presentations.
