Year 11 Bishop’s Warriors

February 8, 2023/in General News/by BHGS

Year 11 students rose to the Bishop’s challenge and completed all the outdoor obstacles and activities designed to test their endurance!

On Friday 3rd February, all year 11 students spent the afternoon completing physical and mental challenges designed to test their teamwork, resilience and ability to adapt.

We worked in teams. Some teams were dressed for the occasion, e.g. one team was dressed as the teenage mutant ninja turtles! We had 5 minutes for each member of our team to complete an obstacle, some were team events and some were individual challenges. One of the challenges involved fishing out numbered shells from a paddling pool full of water and a lot of students enjoyed jumping into the water to complete this challenge! Other challenges included ‘balance for your life’ where we had to work our way across zigzagged benches in groups of 3 and the trippy trappy tyre run where we had to see how quickly our team could traverse the tyres! In amongst the physical obstacles we had to complete mental agility tasks including number puzzles and memory games. It was great fun and we ended with a tug of war for the ultimate challenge!

These events helped us to realise that we can dig deep when we have to and complete tasks that we would never normally encounter. A great, fun way to prepare us for the next few months as our GCSE exams approach.

Music Mark for Bishop’s

February 8, 2023/in General News/by BHGS

Recent developments within the Music Department

We are very pleased that Bishop’s has been given a ‘Music Mark’. This is given to institutions who demonstrate recognition of the value of music education as part of a broad and balanced curriculum, who can evidence a willingness to engage in development conversations related to improving music provision and who have a strategy for music in place which provides for all children. The Music Mark allows the school access to a range of extra resources and opportunities for training as well as demonstrating to our community our commitment to the subject.

As part of our strategy, we are aiming to get more students involved in instrumental music. To this end we are very pleased that our new BHGS Orchestra formed at the start of this half term (see photos). We have been working on an arrangement of Adele’s ‘Make You Feel My Love’. Within our orchestra, we have a wide range of instruments and abilities, and parts are tailored to suit the requirements of our particular set of instrumentalists. We currently have 20 committed members, but are always happy to welcome newcomers.

Watch this space for an exciting up-coming opportunity for students to ‘Get Playing’ with Hertfordshire Music Service. Fliers will be coming out shortly, providing details of how students can access free group taster music lessons on a range of instruments.

Tabletopia for Bishop’s ‘Traitors’ and ‘Faithfuls’

February 7, 2023/in General News/by BHGS

Have you ever wanted to play a game like the TV show The Traitors?

After-school enrichment is one of the aspects of Bishop’s life that teachers drive to excel at. The sheer variety on offer to students of all ages can encourage all sorts of students to try things they never had before and discover new hobbies. One such club is Tabletopia, a club dedicated to table top games and social deduction games. One of the clubs favourite games is Werewolf, where students take on the roles of villager or werewolf, with villagers trying to uncover the werewolves before the werewolves take out the villagers. It is in fact this very game and others like it that have inspired the recent hit BBC TV show ” The Traitors”! What makes this club stand out is how much it encourages students from neurodivergent backgrounds to socialise within a fixed framework, teaching them how they should interact with others if they are a certain character, or react under certain conditions, and learn the repercussions of certain actions, without the worry of if it’s the right choice as it is “just a game”. The club is open to any and all year groups and has a regular attendance of 20 to 30 people weekly. If any student wants to try their hand at a game they need only turn up and join in the fun.

Year 9 Geography visit to the Natural History Museum

February 2, 2023/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Year 9 visits the Natural History Museum

To support the ‘Restless Earth’ topic, Year 9 geographers visited the Natural History Museum in London on Tuesday 31st January 2023. We took part in a trail to find information and were all fascinated by not only the information about different rock types, the layers of different planets, natural disasters and much more but also mesmerised by the many interactive exhibits that involved looking through glass panels, pressing buttons and spinning wheels. After lunch, before our departure, we had the opportunity to visit one exhibit of our choice and we collectively agreed to visit the dinosaur exhibit, which we all enjoyed very much. Upon our arrival to the exhibit, there was an astronomical roaring T-Rex, which scared a few girls but was very popular overall and definitely the highlight of our visit. By the end of the day, it was safe to say that everyone had a convivial time and that this trip was a total success. Thank you to all the staff who came with us and a special thank you to our Head of Humanities, Mrs. Ruffhead for organising the trip and coming with us too! Lilly-Jade T, 9Parr

Signposting vocational pathways

February 1, 2023/in General News/by BHGS

Oaklands College presented the vocational options and pathways to our Year 11s and Year 10s

One of our FE college partners presented to our Year 11 and Year 10 cohort this morning about their options post 16. Oaklands College explained the different pathways and courses available on their two campuses in Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield. The courses range from art and design, business studies, sport through to vocational hair and beauty, animal care and construction options. There are different routes that can lead onto Apprenticeships or university allowing our pupils future option choices. Oaklands offer experienced lecturers on industry specialisms and have links and actively encourage work experience placements during the students’ courses. The T-levels were also introduced, which are a new government initiative which is linking businesses and industry with vocational courses. The format varies, but it is typically 80% course and 20% placement (45 days) – Oaklands College are launching Business, Engineering and Education & Childcare T-levels this September.
