International Club Memento Boxes

November 30, 2021/in General News/by BHGS

International Club members design and produce treasure box to hold memento of their homeland

To coincide with an inspiring visit to Knebworth House, the members of our International Club, which is a meeting space for students who join Bishop’s from schools outside the UK, put together some treasure boxes and filled them with an item that reminded them of their homeland. These resulted in beautiful creations carrying some very special memories.

Y7 Poetry House Competition

November 30, 2021/in General News/by BHGS

Year 7 impress the judges in a House performance poetry competition

On Friday 26th November Year 7 gathered in the hall during period 4 to watch the finals of the house performance poetry competition. For the last two weeks pupils have been learning about performance poetry in their English lessons, and practising and refining their skills. The two finalists from each form performed their poems in front of the whole of Year 7, and a panel of judges. We even had a guest performance from one of our drama teachers, Mr Kench, before all 10 girls took to the stage. It takes a lot of courage to stand up in front of such a large audience, and the judges were impressed by just how well all of the finalists performed. Many of them had not only learnt their poems off by heart, but also thoroughly embraced the concept of performance poetry, acting out their poems enthusiastically and confidently with the aid of the occasional prop. It was also lovely to see how many pupils had written their own poems.

Special mention must go to our three winners. Ruby Chrysanthou (7Pa) was the overall winner with her reading of ‘Strict’ by Michael Rosen. Congratulations also to Gracie Merrigan (7Pa) who helped her with her performance. Together they helped House Parr win 100 points. In second place was Tanisha Patel (7Se) with a poem that she wrote herself called ‘Literally All Indian Mothers’. She earned 50 house points for Seacole. In third place was Georgia Thatcher who also wrote her own poem called ‘Winter is Here’. She was awarded 25 house points for her house, Hadid. All 10 finalists were awarded 5 house points for representing their form. Congratulations to all the girls who took part.

Testing the Urban Heat Island Effect Theory in Hatfield!

November 28, 2021/in General News/by BHGS

Is there evidence of the urban Heat Island Effect in Hatfield?

Year 13 geographers endured the cold winds this week to carry out fieldwork in Hatfield to test the theory of the Urban Heat Island Effect. An urban heat island occurs when an urban area experiences much warmer temperatures than nearby rural areas. The main causes are changes in the land surface by urban development along with waste heat generated by energy use.

We discovered that temperatures were higher in the centre of Hatfield where there was a large amount of concrete and tarmac which absorbs heat and warms the air around them. This agrees with the theory that concrete has a higher albedo rate and absorbs heat which results in higher air temperatures. We also recorded lower temperatures in wooded, park areas, as evapotranspiration from plants cools the air around them. Even on a cold, windy day in November in Hatfield, the differences in temperature were noticeable.

Year 11 Inter House Dance Competition 2021

November 26, 2021/in General News/by BHGS

11 Parr remain undefeated since Year 7 for the Inter House Dance competitions!

On Wednesday 24th and Friday 26th November, Year 11 pupils competed in the Inter House Dance competitions in their double PE lessons.

This was the first Inter House Dance competition in two years as it did not run last year and it was fantastic to see so many pupils involved and showing off a wide array of Dance skills!

PE teachers who would normally teach each half of the year group used a set criteria to award marks to each act and the pupils who were not performing were asked to vote for their favourite acts in terms of entertainment and choreography.

Each House could have a maximum of 3 entries per year group and acts could be soloists, duets, trios or larger groups depending on how many pupils wanted to be involved. For each person who participated they each received 1 House Point for their efforts and the act which received the most marks received the “Audience Choice” award in each half of the year group (plus 3 additional House Points).

The acts were combined for each half of the year group and the top 3 acts in each year group received 1 additional House Point – 3rd place, 3 additional House Points -2nd place and 5 additional House Points – 1st place.

The Year 11 final positions were as follows – 1st – Cerys W 11Pa 2nd place – Megan C * 11Pa 3rd place – Portia A * 11Se 4th place – Rebecca H 11Pa 5th place – Katelin R 11Se 6th place – Amy A and Olivia K 11Ha 7th place – Louise N- A 11Se *=Audience Choice Vote – (additional 3 HPs each)

This meant that the overall positions for each House group finished as 1st – Parr- 100 points 2nd – Seacole – 50 points 3rd – Hadid – 25 points

A fantastic effort from all of the acts – what a wonderful array of talent we have at Bishop’s!

A particularly big well done to 11Pa who finished in 1st place in their last Inter House Dance competition at BHGS – they have won every single Inter House Dance competition in their time at Bishop’s – a brilliant achievement!

A special thank you to the Drama staff who allowed us to swap teaching spaces so we could hold our competitions in the Main Hall.

A final thank you to all of the PE staff for taking the time to run this event for the pupils.

COP26

November 23, 2021/in General News/by BHGS

Bishop’s forest of promises

During COP26, the 26th meeting of the annual UN climate Conference Of Parties, students spent time discussing the issues being tackled at this COP. The conference is attended by countries that signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) – a treaty agreed in 1994. Across the country, school students have made their pledges to the planet this year. Here are the small changes Bishop’s students have pledged to make to try and take proactive steps towards tackling climate change:

  • Turning electrical devices off at the switch
  • Use less plastic by reusing/refilling
  • Eat less meat

What will be your positive contribution to the fight against the climate crisis?

District Badminton Tournament 2021

November 23, 2021/in General News/by BHGS

3rd place for the U14 team at the District Badminton Tournament

On Tuesday 23rd November, Mrs Newberry and Mrs Blakey took six year 9 and year 10 girls to Ridgeway Academy to take part in the District Badminton tournament.

The Under 14 team (Anna S, Jolie K, Ruby S and Ella S) finished 3rd, with Anna winning all her matches very convincingly. The Under 16 team (Shekina S and Shona H) won most of the friendly games they played against Queenswood and Chancellors. The girls were an absolute credit to the school throughout the tournament – well done everyone!

A huge thank you to Mrs Newberry and Mrs Blakey for running the Badminton club on a Friday lunchtime and for giving up their time to organise and take the girls to this competition.

Badminton is fast becoming popular at Bishop’s with Year 7 club on a Wednesday lunchtime with Mr Stevens and Ms Hurley and Year 8-11 club on a Friday lunchtime with Mrs Newberry and Mrs Blakey. Have you attended yet? If not, come along and have a go!
