Year 7 Explore the Cosmos at the National Space Centre

April 27, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

During Physics Week, Year 7 students embarked on an unforgettable journey to the National Space Centre in Leicester

From the moment the students stepped foot into the Space Centre, they were greeted with awe-inspiring exhibits and interactive displays that ignited their curiosity. The journey began with a captivating introduction to the history of space exploration, highlighting landmark achievements and the pioneers who dared to reach for the stars.

As the students delved deeper into the exhibits, they encountered a myriad of fascinating artefacts, including life-size replicas of spacecrafts, moon rocks, and spacesuits worn by astronauts. These relics served as a tangible connection to humanity’s journey beyond Earth’s atmosphere, inspiring the young minds to dream big and reach for the stars.

One of the highlights of the trip was the mesmerizing planetarium show, where students were transported on a virtual tour of the cosmos. With state-of-the-art technology, they witnessed the beauty of distant galaxies, the majesty of our solar system, and the mysteries of black holes. It was a truly immersive experience that left a lasting impression on all who attended.

In the words of Charlotte C, “The trip to the National Space Centre was out of this world! It was amazing to learn about space and see all the cool exhibits.”

Ashfield Music Festival: Where Physics and Music Collide

April 26, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

During Physics Week, 60 Year 10 students gathered to complete a series of challenging physics problems, based around the development of a festival stage.

On April 25th, 60 year 10 students gathered for the Ashfield Music Festival Project. As part of Physics Week, the event challenged participants with intricate physics problems, fostering teamwork and perseverance. Amongst it all, students used their knowledge of physics to build 3D models of stage structures, design colour changing costumes, build electrical circuits, and entered the (surprisingly exciting!) world of health and safety requirements.

The festival showcased the diverse applications of physics in the real world, offering insights into career paths and a preview of the A-level physics course. As excitement builds for the winner’s announcement, one thing is clear: the Ashfield Music Festival Project has ignited a passion for physics and collaboration among all who participated. Stay tuned for the thrilling conclusion!

Year 12 Geographers in Dorset

April 26, 2024/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Year 12 Geographers enjoyed collecting data for their A Level fieldwork investigation coursework in Swanage

Year 12 geographers visited Dorset for 3 days at the end of April 2024. The students had planned their own fieldwork investigations for the NEA Coursework element of the A-Level Geography course. Mrs James and Mrs Ruffhead were really impressed at the quality of the planning and the time students had spent preparing for the fieldwork. This meant that high quality data was collected over the three days. We travelled over the chain ferry from Sandbanks to Studland Bay on Wednesday and divided into two groups to collect data on plant bio-diversity and abundance, vegetation height, soil pH and soil moisture, as well measuring distances and angles to understand the changing profile of the sand dunes with distance from the sea.

Thursday was spent visiting beaches along Chesil Beach including Burton Bradstock, Abbotsbury, West Bexington, Chickerell, Chiswell and also Weymouth. Data was collected for pebble size and shape, wave type, speed and direction of longshore drift and beach profile. Students now have plenty of data to use to write up outstanding NEA course works which will be handed in before the February half term 2025.

Before travelling home on Friday, we spent the morning in Swanage, collecting more beach data, particularly the different height in sediment found along the groynes from the water’s edge to the back of the beach. This will help the students understand the changes in beach profile and pebble size and shape at Swanage.

The students were amazing and as well as collecting huge amounts of data, everyone had a very enjoyable time.

Year 8 Tensegrity in Physics Week 2024

April 23, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

Year 8 showed they could withstand the tension during Physics week.

Tensegrity is a method of supporting a structure using tension. The force used is typically associated with wires and string. It is short for tensional integrity. In a tensegrity team practical, Year 8 pupils constructed physical structures that illustrated how they were held in place by the balance of tensile and compression forces acting upon them.

Step into the NHS Competition

April 21, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

Bishop’s Students promote NHS careers

Three Bishop’s students have been entered into the Step into the NHS competition. Students were given the opportunity to discover the various careers in the NHS and select one to research in-depth. They learnt what a job description is and researched the skills, experience and qualities needed for their chosen role. They were then given the opportunity to create a fun, lively and unique job advertisement to tell other young people about their chosen role. Well done to Ela D, Haniya K, Benedicta M for their fabulous work!

The results will be released in June 2024.

Anti-bullying Ambassadors reach out into the community

April 20, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

The Anti-bullying Committee talks about equality and diversity to De Havilland Primary School pupils

On the 26th of March 2024, the Anti-Bullying Committee visited De Havilland Primary School to deliver a workshop to Year 5 pupils on respecting Equality and Diversity as well as the negative effect of bullying. Our Anti Bullying committee agreed last term that, as well as tackling bullying in school, we should also reach out into our local community. We decided that this would be effective because we would be educating younger people on the effects of bullying and what bullying really is, which in turn, would hopefully prevent bullying occurring as they got older. I reached out to De Havilland Primary School as I had completed successful work experience there myself and had several meetings with the Headteacher to discuss, plan and organise the perfect workshop.

At De Havilland school, we first asked the Year 5 pupils to read out negative and positive messages and tell the rest of the group how this made them feel. This was so that they could understand the powerful effect words have on people. We later explained what the words ‘diversity’ and ‘inclusion’ meant and how we could implement them in school but also in society. Here is one example of inclusion that we used in order to explain what it means: “Let’s think of everyone here as a large family. In this example, to be inclusive means that everyone has a place at the table. No one is excluded or left out. Everyone has something to offer and do. “

We all thoroughly enjoyed working with the Year 5 pupils and their teachers at De Havilland School

Matt Dickinson Author Visit

April 18, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

Students inspired by Matt Dickinson to write their own creative writing!

Climber and Explorer Matt Dickinson, an award-winning author, visited Bishop’s on 27th March 2024. Year 7 and 8 pupils were fascinated by the exciting adventures Matt has had and how he is inspired by his experiences of visiting places around the world to write both fiction (thrillers) and non-fiction (biographical) books. Matt presented a fascinating presentation on his experiences of climbing Mount Everest, the impact of tourism and global warming, plus possible career opportunities for those thinking of studying Geography at university.

Matt asked for a pair of mountain boots for his tenth birthday and has never looked back! He introduced us to his life of adventure as an award winning Director/Cameraman for National Geographic TV, Discovery Channel and the BBC. During his action-packed career he has worked with some of the great characters from the world of adventure: Bear Grylls, Judy Leden and Brian Blessed. He has filmed on Everest’s summit (the first British film maker to do so and get back alive), in Antarctica, Greenland, Alaska and on top of the highest live volcano in the world. Matt showed dramatic images from Everest, Antarctica, Africa, Central Asia and the Arctic, bringing his intrepid adventures alive. Matt shared how these experiences have inspired his writing of The Everest Files trilogy, the Mortal Chaos series and Lie, Kill, Walk Away.

Matt also ran two writing workshops for groups of Year 7 and Year 8 students. He spoke about his adventures to Antarctica and raised some of the issues linked to climate change and how the fragile ecosystem has been affected. The students were so enthused and fascinated that they produced some superb pieces of creative writing in the form of an application letter on why they should be accepted to participate in an expedition to Antarctica. Matt gave the girls basic guidance on writing structure then told them to write from the heart and challenge the reader. The resulting stories were outstanding. Thank you Matt for inspiring us!

Musicians perform at Hatfield House

April 16, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

Musicians impress at Hatfield House charity coffee morning

On 16th April 2024, Lady Salisbury hosted her 16th Annual Charity Coffee Morning in The Old Palace at Hatfield House, along with a preview of the West Garden. There is a long established tradition of Bishop’s students performing as part of this event, which this year was raising money for Breaks Manor Youth & Community Centre & St. Etheldreda’s. Grace M (piano) and Coral E (voice), both Year 10 pupils, performed in the Old Palace and did themselves proud. The performances were of an extremely high standard and the girls represented the school impeccably. Well done!

Anti-bullying Committee visits Oakview Primary School

April 15, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

The Anti-bullying Ambassadors talk to Primary pupils about the effects of bullying on mental health.

On Friday the 22nd March, we went to the lovely school of Oak View to talk about how bullying affects people’s mental health. We talked to Year 5 and 6 and they were wonderful and respectful. They sat quietly in assembly and listened. We talked about the many different types of bullying and the difference between bullying and banter as well as what bullying exactly is, and the meaning of Neurodiversity. We also acted out and described all the different scenarios associated with bullying and did many quizzes with them where they contributed very well, and when they were asked questions they put their hands up accordingly and didn’t speak out of turn. We spent a lot of time planning the assembly and it all paid off as we taught young minds about bullying and its effects. We really enjoyed being there and teaching them and we hope we can work with them again in the future.
