Life Skills
At Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School, Life Skills provision includes Citizenship Education and Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE). We believe these areas are complementary, inter-related and all contribute to a young person’s personal development.
Intent Statement
Life Skills education is a subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future.
These skills and attributes help pupils to stay healthy, safe and prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. Life Skills education helps pupils to achieve their academic potential, and leave school equipped with skills they will need throughout later life.
Life Skills education helps pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.
From making responsible decisions about alcohol to succeeding in their first job, Life Skills education helps pupils to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up.
Curriculum
Lessons are structured to give a comfortable, safe environment in which girls feel free to express their opinions and discuss issues without fear of belittlement. We use a variety of teaching methods including role play, discussion, practical experience and games as well as written and oral work. As many issues are of a personal nature we do not insist that each girl has to contribute to all discussions but we do encourage them to do so when they feel comfortable.
Many topics are revisited each year. As girls experience maturity we give more appropriate information and more opportunities for discussion and opinion forming. Other topics may be visited once or twice according to the needs of each year group.
