Year 7 House Performance Poetry Competition
Year 7 gave their all in the finals of the House Performance Poetry Competition
On Thursday 24th November Year 7 gathered in the hall to watch the finals of the House Performance Poetry Competition.
For the last two weeks pupils have been learning about performance poetry in their English lessons and practising and refining their skills. On Thursday two finalists from each form performed their poems in front of the whole of Year 7, and a panel of judges.
The event started with a guest performance from one of our drama teachers, Mr Kench, before our finalists eventually took to the stage. It takes a lot of courage to stand up in front of such a large audience, and the judges were impressed by just how well ALL of the finalists performed. Many of them had not only learnt their poems off by heart, but also thoroughly embraced the concept of performance poetry, acting out their poems enthusiastically and confidently with the aid of the occasional prop. It was also lovely to see how many pupils had written their own poems.
Special mention must go to our three winners. Ebun E (7Au) was the overall winner with her dramatic reading of ‘The Poem of Life’. In second place was Lola C (7Fr) with AA Milne’s poem ‘The King’s Breakfast’. In third place was Ruby E (7Fr) with Michael Rosen’s poem ‘No Breathing’. This meant that Austen won 100 house points, with Franklin winning a total of 75 house points for their second and third place results. All individual finalists were also awarded 5 house points for representing their form.
