CleanUpHatfield Litter Pick – October 2019

September 30, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Happy faces at ‘CleanUpHatfield’ event!

On Monday the 30th September 2019, our Save the World Club took part in the CleanUpHatfield event. Students from years 7-11 got involved as we wanted to help clean up the environment and make our local area look nicer. We went outside after school with litter pickers and gloves to clean up litter from Woods Avenue. You wouldn’t believe how much there was! We did this for an hour and in the end we collected three bags full of rubbish, including a Nike slider, beer cans and lots of crisp and sweet wrappers! It’s important to go litter picking to help our area become cleaner and to also help the environment because animals eat the rubbish that we discard on the floor.

Women in STEM at Sandhurst

September 26, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Inspiring activities engaged us all

On Thursday 26th September 2019, 15 Year 10 students visited Sandhurst to discover more about careers and opportunities for women in STEM. When we first arrived we were given an information pack about career pathways in STEM industries and were greeted by the army personnel. During the event we participated in a workshop with Xylem, a company that enables their clients worldwide to transport, treat and test water. We learnt about how we are able to access water in our homes and the process of treating and cleaning water. We then went on to take part in an experiment where we tested samples of water to find out the pH, clarity and how much oxygen it contained.

We also had the opportunity to visit stalls, exhibits and take part in many fun activities. For example, I enjoyed visiting many Military stalls where there were teaching us about the machinery, equipment and how it is used. I was especially interested in the Engineering exhibition, where we investigated Virtual Reality to investigate a fictional landscape.

I found the event extremely inspiring and informative, and it has certainly made me think about the wider application of science and maths in an engineering environment. I had the opportunity to discuss careers with a range of different business leaders and was inspired by women who have made it to the top of their field. I would like to thank Sandhurst for hosting the event, and all of the businesses for taking tie to help us understand more about the potential of STEM subjects.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award – Bronze Expedition 2019

September 22, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Teamwork shines through on the DofE Bronze Expedition

Following many months of training, planning and preparation, fifty girls from Year 10 set out to navigate their way around the beautiful sunny Hertfordshire countryside on their Bronze expedition. Groups were supported by staff and volunteers, who ensured that they set off properly equipped and ready for the challenge. Each group walked a total of 30km carrying all of their kit over the course of the weekend; camping overnight, pitching their tents, cooking their planned meals on Trangia stoves and listening to the sounds of Muntjac deer, owls and foxes in the night. An evening campfire was enjoyed by all, and spirits remained high despite some rain on Sunday morning. All groups demonstrated great determination, supporting each other and working together to achieve the expedition section. This, combined with their successes at volunteering, physical activity ad developing skills, means that the girls have successfully achieved their Bronze Award. Huge congratulations to all!

GCSE results 2019

August 22, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Bishop’s celebrates the best ever GCSE results!

Bishop’s girls are celebrating another fantastic set of results which are even better than last year’s successes! Preliminary analysis shows that the vast majority of our girls have made excellent progress through their GCSE years.

18 girls achieved a minimum of 8 grades at 7-9; outstanding results were achieved by, amongst others:

• Hannah Talmage – eight grade 9s and two 8s • Rosie Langston – seven grade 9s and three 8s • Charlotte Deane – seven grade 9s, three 7s • Jodie Garg – six grade 9s, three 8s

There is no doubt that all the students have worked very hard to achieve these excellent results and thanks must go to their teachers and parents for the support given. We wish all our girls success in what they choose to do next, confident that that their GCSE results give them a firm foundation for the future.

A level results 2019

August 15, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Students celebrate an excellent set of A level and BTEC results

We are very pleased with this year’s A Level and BTEC results which show a further improvement on last year’s good ones. Again, universities have been making an unprecedented number of unconditional offers (25% of our students received one) and whilst this may be discouraging some students from aiming for the top grades, we have still achieved over 25% of our grades at A* – A and over 80% of grades at C or above.

We wish all our Year 13 leavers the very best of luck for their future aspirations whether they are heading for university, apprenticeships, employment or taking a gap year.

Outstanding achievers include:

• Ella Keenan – History A*, Geography *, Government and Politics A – off to Keble College, University of Oxford to study History and Politics • Melody Cremer – Geography A*, English A, Biology A – off to Churchill College, University of Cambridge to study Geography • Lucy Afford – Psychology A*, Geography A, Biology A – off to Bristol University to study Biology • Erica Ugoji – History A*, Geography A, Economics A – off to SOAS, University of London to study Economics • Anna Brockman – Economics A, History A, Sociology A – off to Liverpool University to study Law • Anna Groombridge – History A, Religious Studies A, Core Maths A, Psychology B – off to Birmingham University to study History

All our girls are to be congratulated on their dedication and commitment to their studies which have produced such brilliant results alongside the relentless support offered by their teachers.

Everest mountaineer Matt Dickinson visits Bishop’s

March 1, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Award-winning author, climber and film-maker Matt Dickinson visited Bishop’s on Monday

On Monday we were thrilled to welcome award-winning author, climber, adventurer and film-maker Matt Dickinson to the school. Matt has made films and documentaries for the BBC, National Geographic TV and the Discovery Channel, as well as being the author of fiction and non-fiction.

Matt spoke to all of years 7, 8 and 9 about his climbing experiences on Mount Everest. We learnt that Matt attended Hemel school, Hemel Hempstead where his passion for climbing was ignited by borrowing a book on climbing from the school library. He was an ardent proponent of reading, saying how he had seen the world of his five children be expanded so positively by books. He urged the girls to be more adventurous with their reading, to push into different genres they wouldn’t normally pick up, try new books of someone they haven’t read before, get recommendations from friends etc as by being more adventurous it would expand their world in the most wonderful way. Matt said: ‘I’m a big reader, I’m always reading and try to engage with books across as wide a range of subjects as I can”.

Matt then proceeded to wow his audiences with a thrilling presentation of his experiences climbing Everest – he has reached the summit once and climbed lower on numerous occasions. He engaged the girls with statistics on the danger of mountain climbing, with a 4% chance of death when climbing Everest although this rises to a staggering 29% for K2, the world’s second highest peak. Perhaps unsurprisingly many of the girls, and staff, were willing to accept a 4% fatality risk for the chance of summiting Everest, but that number dropped considerably in relation to K2. Matt said that despite the danger, if he had a phone call tomorrow offering him the opportunity to go back to Everest or K2 he would go in a heartbeat, despite the fact that he loves his life and his five children and being fully aware of the risks involved. This led to a lively discussion as to the appeal of mountain climbing and the motives that drive people to take such extreme risks – sense of personal achievement, fame, bragging rights, fulfilling a dream etc.

He spoke about his personal experience with frostbite, sharing an astonishing photograph that caused a few squeals of disgust from the girls!, the effects of altitude sickness, the work of Sherpas on the mountain and the sacredness of Everest to them. His talk was peppered with fascinating photographs and video clips that highlighted his journey and experiences.

He encouraged the girls to have a dream and to plan for it in order to succeed. He made reference to numerous female explorers and pioneers that he has worked with, particularly Judy Leden, the British hang glider and paraglider pilot who holds three world champion titles and has combined her love of adventure with also raising a family.

Matt is the author of several teen/young adult novels all of which are influenced by his experiences. He talked about his Everest Files trilogy (The Everest Files, North Face and Killer Storm), featuring strong female protagonists, are thrilling reads set on the highest mountain in the world. “The Everest Files” is a mystery based on the dark side of human nature, which Matt witnessed first-hand during his time climbing Everest. He also mentioned his most recent book “Lie Kill Walk Away”, an action-packed thriller about two teenagers racing to save the world from a deadly bioweapon.

During the day Matt also presented to the Geography students in Years 10-13. Through his extensive adventure travel he has witnessed first hand the effects of climate change and the growth of eco-tourism in the Himalayas over the past 20 years and this led to a really interesting talk. He was also able to link his experience in the extreme environment of Antarctica. He discussed “The Death Zone”, his autobiographical account of his summit of Everest via the treacherous North Face during the most devastating killer storm ever to hit the mountain and one that left eight people dead.

BHGS was fortunate to host such a wonderfully engaging and inspiring speaker. Matt Dickinson – a true action-hero!

Some of the feedback from the girls of the day: “I think he has inspired many people to accomplish their dreams, but to also have a plan. He has influenced me to make the most of life and to take any possible chances that you are given.” Lotty

“Matt Dickinson’s chat was gripping and informative, he balanced his time between his books and his amazing adventure stories. He interacted with the audience, whilst telling clever jokes and explaining his stories in good detail.” Amelie

“Matt was funny and intriguing. He had many adventures in his past and inpsired many people, me included.” Roxy

“I very much enjoyed Matt’s talk as it made me laugh, however at the same time it taught me many things and inspired me.” Cecile

Citizenship pupils visit Parliament

The Citizenship class visit Parliament to learn how the country’s laws are made

by Aimee H and Flora M

On Monday 28th February, the GCSE Citizenship classes went on an extremely exciting trip to the Houses of Parliament! It was a fantastic day and we would like to tell you all about it.

To begin with, we went into the education centre part of Parliament to watch a very informative video teaching us all about the history of Parliament dating all the way back to the signing of the Magna Carta and how women got the vote! We then met our tour guide Evangeline, who also happened to be an ex-Bishop’s pupil (what a coincidence!). It was very interesting to learn all about the ins and outs of Parliament. The first room we visited was the Queen’s dressing room, which was very private. We loved admiring the beautiful artistry. Next we were told about the different lobbies where the MPs go to vote on different matters when the speaker can’t quite tell if the result was a yes or a no. There are two. If you stand in the “aye” lobby, that means you are voting in favour of something and the “no” lobby means you are voting against it. We visited the “no” lobby which was located at the back of the House of Commons.

Our favourite part of the trip was visiting the House of Commons and the House of Lords, where all the action happens! In the House of Commons, we both stood opposite each other in the place where Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn stand in debates which was really cool.

We thoroughly enjoyed having a lunch that overlooked the River Thames, and experiencing multiple Brexit protests. We witnessed people protesting for both Leave and Remain. One that we thought was very extreme was one where there were people in the middle of the road shouting “leave means leave”!

We learnt a lot throughout the day, some of the facts that stood out to us were:

– Jo Cox (an MP that lost her life) and other MPs had a special plaque in the House of Commons to commemorate their political contributions. – The Green Party only have 1 of 650 seats in the House of Commons – Michael Gove missed being able to vote in a recent debate (he only managed to get his foot through the door before time was up when he should have stuck his head through!) – MPs are given 8 minutes to get to the voting lobbies and apparently it’s 8 minutes because that’s how long it would take Theresa May to run from 10 Downing Street to Parliament!

Overall, it was the best school trip we had been on. It was beneficial and the time we spent there was highly valuable. The only disappointment was Grant Shapps not coming although we had written to him.

We would like to thank Mrs Jackson, Mr Griffiths and Mrs Coleman for organising the trip. We appreciate how beneficial it has been for our learning.

Congratulations to our Intermediate Youth Speaks Team!

February 27, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Our Intermediate Youth Speaks Team performed brilliantly at the District Final.

Our Intermediate Team of Nelly C, Lily L and Katie H, spoke beautifully at last night’s Rotary Youth Speaks District Final at Vandyke Upper School in Leighton Buzzard. Discussing the query, “Should more support be given to the homeless?” the girls spoke eloquently and with boundless enthusiasm and we as a school are immensely proud of their achievement of getting so far in the competition.

The girls faced teams from all over the District including, Aylesbury High School, Ashylns School, Beechwood Park School, St Alban’s Girls’ School and The Priory School. Unfortunately, the girls did not win but they were definitely Mrs Jackson’s winners by far!

A massive well done to them all and huge congratulations go to Katie H who won a prize for the “Best Vote of Thanks” of the evening – well done Katie! We look forward to hearing what the girls are going to talk about in the competition next year!

Year 12 and 13 Psychology Trip to London Zoo

Year 12 and 13 Psychology Phobias Trip to London Zoo

Forty-Five Year 12 and 13 Psychology Students at Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School visited London Zoo on Tuesday 16th February. We were lucky to enjoy warm and sunny weather while visiting various animal enclosures including the tiger, monkey, penguin, lion and gorilla enclosures and also the Reptile House to consider why some non-dangerous animals cause phobic responses. The highlight of the trip was two talks by John Clifford, a Clinical Hypnotherapist, on the causes and treatments of phobias. John gave some interesting anecdotes on patients he has successfully treated for spider phobia including a woman who broke her leg jumping out of a first floor window to escape a spider that was between her and the door and then began to move in her direction. Also a young girl who tried to dive out of the passenger seat in her Dad’s car, which was travelling at 70 mph, when she spotted a spider running across the dashboard but who fortunately could not undo her seat belt fast enough to be successful. The students then had the opportunity to take part in a group hypnosis session to rid themselves of their irrational fear of spiders and then many were willing to hold one of London Zoo’s habituated tarantulas. A very enjoyable and informative day!
