Youth Speaks Success

February 12, 2020/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Both Intermediate and Senior BHGS teams through to the District Final of Youth Speaks public speaking competition

On Tuesday 11th February, Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School entered the Mid-Herts Rotary Youth Speaks District Semi Final competition. This competition aims to offer young people experience in speaking on a public platform as a member of a team. In a team of three, Katie H, Nelly C and Gwen C wrote speeches on single sex education. The girls performed brilliantly and were praised by audience members and the Rotarians for their excellent oratorical skills and the thought-provoking topic they chose to discuss. “I was very nervous to start with’, said Nelly, ‘but doing this together made me feel more confident”.

They not only are through to the next round, but also won the whole semi-final! Katie H conceded that “It was a tough competition as the other schools had very talented speakers who ranged from year 10 to year 12”. The competition was altogether a very good experience for our pupils. Gwen noted: “It was also inspiring to hear all about the charity work the Rotary Club gets involved in”.

Only last week our Intermediate Rotary Youth Speaks team qualified through to the District Final. Aliyeen, Daniella and Jessica chose the topic of Animal Testing to demonstrate their outstanding public speaking abilities.

This means that both our Intermediate and Senior teams are now through to the District Final in Leighton Buzzard after Half Term. Well done girls – brilliant effort!

Author Penny Joelson Visits Bishop’s

February 11, 2020/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

YA Author Penny Joelson visited Bishop’s on Monday 11 February

On 11th February we were thrilled to welcome local author Penny Joelson to the school. Penny is the author of two young adult mystery/thriller novels, the award-winning I Have No Secrets and Girl in the Window. Penny gave a fascinating talk to Years 7 and 8 on what inspired her to become an author, how she was locked in her local library as a young girl and where she draws her inspiration for her novels. She also gave a fascinating oversight of how lucky she was to see her first book (I Have No Secrets) being printed and showed the girls how books look in their ‘raw’ state when they are hot off the press.I Have No Secrets is the story of fourteen-year-old Jemma who has severe cerebral palsy. Unable to speak or move, she relies on her family and carer for everything. Gemma unearths a terrible secret but is powerless to tell anyone, and a killer is on the loose. In Girl in the Window Kasia is crippled by chronic ME, but witnesses an abduction from her bedroom window and is sure a girl in the opposite window did too, but when she searches for her she’s told there is no girl. As a teenager Penny worked with disabled children with communication difficulties which helped inspire Gemma’s character and Kasia’s character was drawn from Penny’s own experience of suffering from ME for a decade. The girls thoroughly engaged with her talk and asked some impressive and thought-provoking questions at the end. Their feedback has consistently stated how much they enjoyed the opportunity to not only meet a ‘real’ author, but to learn what inspires them. Penny’s reading of an extract from Girl in the Window really grabbed the audience’s attention and had them on the edge of their seats wondering what would happen next – needless to say Penny’s books have been quickly borrowed from the library following her visit. We can’t wait for her new book, What the Eye Can’t See, which will be released in July and were sorry that she ran out of time, following all the fantastic questions, to read us an exclusive advance extract!Penny also held a creative writing workshop in which students had the opportunity to create their own mystery story, based on books in which you can choose your own ending. This involved the girls deciding on a character (14 year old Caroline), where she lived (a small village) and thinking about two things that she was doing at that moment (looking/reading at old family album/diary and wanting to find out more). The girls then worked in pairs to think of three ideas of what could happen next which resulted in some lively discussion, they continued choosing through various options for the next section of their story before writing a paragraph. The level of work was fantastic, some of the stories gave us goosebumps and we were keen to find out what would happen next. Overall the girls thoroughly enjoyed the workshop.

Another amazing Gym and Dance Showcase at BHGS

February 7, 2020/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Another night to celebrate the Gymnastics and Dance talents of our pupils at Bishop’s

On Thursday 6th February, BHGS hosted the Gym and Dance Showcase in the Main Hall.

This was the culmination of the hard work from pupils and staff since the auditions took place way back in November where there were a record number of pupils that auditioned for a slot in the Showcase.

Overall there were over 100 pupils involved from all year groups (7-13).

Acts included a street dance medley, Mrs James’ tap group, ballet, modern and contemporary dancing as well as individual, pair, group gymnastic pieces and 2 rhythmic gymnastic performances to name but a few.

A huge well done to all of the performers involved – this takes commitment, dedication and hard work from everyone involved and the girls performed beautifully on the night to really show off the vast array of talent we have here at Bishop’s.

Thank you to all of the staff involved in the lead up to and including the night of the showcase as this wouldn’t have been possible without all of your help.

Roll on next year!

Miss Cameron

Christmas Market 2019

December 13, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Pupils enjoyed a festive lunchtime at the Christmas Market

Years 7 & 8 created a wonderful Christmas market for everyone to enjoy on Friday 13th December. There were some beautifully wrapped homemade biscuits, fudge and crafts, creative games and smiles all round. Thank you Ms Morgan for running your festive photo-booth and Ms Fairbairn for some stunning face-paintings. In total, we raised £583 towards audio-visual equipment for the school. Well done to all those involved and a big thank you to everyone who donated items or participated. Prizes for the most creative stall and highest funds raised will be awarded in our end of term assembly.

St Albans Schools Book Awards Ceremony

December 12, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Y7 Chatterbooks attended the St Albans Schools Book Award ceremony

The Y7 Chatterbooks book club attended the St Albans Schools Book Award day hosted at St Columba’s College, St Albans on Thursday 12 December . The girls had all been diligently reading (and even re-reading!) the three shortlisted books over the past two months in readiness for the book discussion groups and associated quizzes. The day culminated in a brilliant talk by author Lisa Thompson, last year’s winner with The Goldfish Boy. Lisa gave a fascinating account of her journey to becoming a writer and where she draws her inspiration from. She then read from her latest book The Day I was Erased. Students were fortunate enough to get a sneak-peak at Lisa’s newest title The Boy Who Fooled the World which will be released 2 January 2020.

All in all the girls thoroughly enjoyed their day at the St Albans Schools Book Awards.

Mrs Roth, Senior Librarian

Last Thursday the year 7 book club (ChatterBooks) attended the St Albans Book Awards. We had to read 3 books which were: Boy Underwater (Adam Baron), No Fixed Address (Susin Nielsen) and The Children of Castle Rock (Natasha Farrant) – they were all great. We were split into 8 groups and battled against each other to see which group were the ultimate book readers. During the quizzes we all had opportunities to win amazing books and we got to meet the brilliant author Lisa Thompson (author of The Goldfish Boy, The Day I Was Erased and so much more). Everybody could purchase a Lisa Thompson book and get it signed! The whole day was absolutely amazing and I would like to thank the two librarians that took us on the trip.

Year 13 Enquiring into Elizabeth I

November 22, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Year 13 enrichment trip to Westminster Abbey

On Friday 22nd November, Year 13 visited Westminster Abbey for a guided tour workshop as an introduction to their A Level study of the Elizabethan religious settlement. After an introduction to the history of Westminster Abbey and the significance of Coronation at Westminster Abbey, we were given a special guided tour. Using the Abbey itself as a historical source, the expert guides explored with us the early reign of Elizabeth I and the events of the religious settlement. The history was ‘brought to life’ as students retraced the footsteps that Elizabeth I herself took on her Coronation. The students found the trip extremely worthwhile in supporting their learning and were still talking about it on the train ride back to Hatfield. As Zoe P commented ‘I found out so much I didn’t know and it has inspired me to find out much more about Elizabeth’. What a great testament to the power of enrichment trips!

Royal Academy Outreach life drawing workshop

November 15, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

The Royal Academy visit Bishop’s Art Department to run an intensive one day life drawing workshop for Year 10 Art students.

The Royal Academy’s Outreach Workshop Programme is centred on life drawing. These workshops for students encourage an approach to art based upon observation, instinct and exploration. The workshop explores what kind of language charcoal can create and how that might be applied to drawing the nude. Today, students took on this challenge without knowing where it might lead; from moment to moment they were amused, surprised and engaged. The day involves play, speculation as much as concentration. At the end of it all, the students are pretty much exhausted; a sure sign that they have been working with commitment and energy. Drawings have been made, looked at and discussed, and together students have enjoyed an experience which was educational and uniquely memorable.

Biosciences Showcase for Biology Week 2019

October 21, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Biosciences are showcased in an array of activities for Biology Week 2019

It has been another exciting Biology Week at Bishop’s this year as the amazing world of biosciences was showcased in an array of activities and experiments. House Franklin reports on what they enjoyed the most:

Plague, pox and pestilence – How pathogens enter the body & antibodies work “The Biology Week Lecture held for Year 11 was a very eye-opening and informative session. Not only was the lecture fun and interactive, it was also packed full of relevant information to better our studies of vaccines and pathogens. During this session, we learn a lot about antibodies and antigens and we were taught the ways in which a pathogen can enter the body. I thought this session was very useful and engaging.” Pearl, 11Fr

Maggot racing – Observing insect response to stimuli “I don’t like maggots but it was great fun trying to get them to move along the race track with a light. Mine took a long time but some of my friends had very quick maggots. Everyone got involved including the teachers, it was great fun.” Amelia, 7Fr

CSI – Solving a crime, using state-of-the-art forensic techniques “On Wednesday 9th October, we had a day off timetable for a CSI workshop (forensic science). We had to figure out who killed a man called Ben. It was really fun and interesting. It was also very stressful because the man who was running the workshop gave us a time limit and put on stressful music which accelerated when the timer was running out. At the beginning of the day, we were put into groups of 6. The groups were named after famous detectives; I was in Marples. At the end of the day, the three winning teams got gold, silver and bronze medals (depending on where they came) and a box of chocolates per group. My group didn’t win, sadly…” Charlotte Gould, 9Fr

Amgen – Manipulating & separating DNA from cheek cells, using professional biotechnology equipment borrowed through the Amgen programme. “We spent the day extracting and analysing our own DNA as well as working with bacterial plasmids. We extracted DNA from our cheek cells and amplified it using the polymerase chain reaction. Whilst this was amplifying, we carried out a restriction digest on two plasmids and then ligated a gene into one of the plasmids. We visualised this ligation on a gel using a technique called DNA gel electrophoresis. All these techniques are in our Biology A level specification and hard to understand; so actually doing the experiment was great and we will also now be able to analyse our results and carry out some further population genetics based on the class results.” Annie, 12Fr

Skype call with a zoo-keeper – Question time with an expert in zoology “During Biology Week, we had a Skype session with a zoo keeper from Whipsnade Zoo. She was a bird keeper and actually showed us the flamingos at the zoo…live! We asked her lots of questions about why she chose this career and what we would need to do if we wanted to become a zookeeper. She gets to hand-rear chicks but it takes a lot of time with feeds every 2 hours!! It was really interesting and great fun.” Beth, 11Fr

Animaltastic – Learning about exotic animals, their habitat and conservation methods “This was great fun! We saw a snake, tarantula, pygmy hedgehog, armadillo and giant millipede. The armadillo looked very odd and stayed curled up but we heard about its habitat in the wild and how it is adapted to its environment. The tarantula hunts its prey but spinning webs that cover a large area of the floor and then it bites anything that gets trapped in it. We were allowed to hold or stroke all the animals and I learnt a lot about both cold-blooded and warm-blooded animals.” Dr A.Bune, Head of Franklin House and Joint Head of KS3 Science

We all look forward to Science Week next!

Year 8’s Visit to Kew Gardens

October 14, 2019/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Experiencing different ecosystems from around the world!

Year 8 pupils enjoyed a wonderful time at Kew Gardens on 10th October 2019. We visited the Palm House where there are fantastic examples of rainforest plants, the Princess of Wales Conservatory for hot desert cacti and succulents and also the Temperate House. The girls experienced the hot humid conditions found in the rainforest and saw the lush vegetation that have adapted to survive in the tropical rainforest such as waxy eaves with drip tips. We learnt about how cacti have spikes that are rolled up leaves that help reduce transpiration in the hot desert. We were fortunate to visit on a beautiful Autumn day and climb up to the canopy level on the Treetop Walk. The walkway even sways in the light breeze, like it would in the canopy of the rainforest! A really enjoyable and awe inspiring day.

Year 12 Politics students visit Houses of Parliament

To help with their study of Parliament, as part of the Government & Politics A Level, the Year 12 students visited the Houses of Parliament on Wednesday 9th October. The morning began with an in-depth tour of the Palace of Westminster and then the students took part in an interactive workshop to develop a better understanding of British politics, focusing on representation and voting. The trip was a fantastic opportunity for them to engage in the political process and bring to life the British politics we discuss in lessons.
