A Delicious Half Term Journey

May 20, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

From exploring London’s diverse culinary landscape to mastering food hygiene and celebrating global festival foods, our students had an unforgettable half term of delicious discoveries and hands-on learning

We’ve had an incredibly fun and exciting time exploring food this half term! Our Year 10 students embarked on the immersive Talk Eat Walk tour in London, diving into the rich history of Old Victorian London. Our adventure took us to Spitalfields Market, where we savoured the vibrant flavours of Sri Lankan cuisine. In Banglatown, we indulged in a delightful assortment of samosas, onion bhajis and pakoras and wandered through the historic ruins of Truman’s Brewery. A highlight was our stop at Dark Sugars, where we enjoyed decadent chocolate truffles and the most delicious hot chocolate. The journey continued with mouth-watering salt beef bagels on Brick Lane and concluded with heavenly sourdough donuts. It was a truly fantastic experience that left our students inspired for the next part of their learning.

Meanwhile, our Year 8 students have been delving into the world of protein and food hygiene. They’ve honed their skills in handling and preparing meat, crafting their own sausage rolls and fajitas with newfound expertise.

Year 9 students have been diligently working on their festival food project, bringing a diverse array of cultures and cuisines into our food room. Some students showcased their family and cultural festival foods, sharing their traditions and culinary knowledge with their peers. It’s been amazing to see their passion and creativity come to life.

Year 9 Triumph in Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award!

May 20, 2024/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

58 Year 9 participants at Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School conquered the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award expedition with teamwork, resilience, and a touch of nature exploration.

We are thrilled to celebrate the fantastic achievement of our Year 9 cohort, who recently conquered the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award expedition! Over a glorious weekend filled with sunshine and adventure, 58 students embarked on a challenging yet rewarding journey, navigating their way between Wymondley Wood Campsite, Hitchin, Stevenage, and Letchworth.

This two-day expedition tested not only their navigational skills but also their teamwork and resilience. There were moments of excitement (and perhaps a healthy dose of map-checking!), but the girls persevered with great spirit. Their determination truly shone through, making the accomplishment all the more rewarding.

The expedition wasn’t just about reaching the destination. Our budding explorers turned into nature enthusiasts along the way, discovering new and interesting plant life to document. The spirit of adventure wasn’t limited to the terrain – the girls captured countless memories through photos, creating a lasting record of their journey.

Their accomplishment is even more impressive considering they cooked their meals for Saturday’s dinner and Sunday’s breakfast themselves on Trangia’s, putting their pre-trip planning and culinary skills to the test!

But what truly sets an expedition apart is the camaraderie. Throughout the challenges, the group supported and encouraged each other, filling the countryside with laughter and song. This collaborative spirit is a testament to the strong sense of community we foster at Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School.

We are incredibly proud of our Year 9 students. They have not only conquered the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award but have also gained valuable life skills in teamwork, problem-solving, and perseverance. This experience will undoubtedly stay with them as they continue their 7-year journey at Bishop’s Hatfield and beyond.

Congratulations once again to our amazing Year 9 cohort!

Year 10 Geographers’ Norfolk field trip adventure

May 18, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

Year 10 Geographers collect data in the seaside town of Sheringham and Cley-next-the-Sea

Year 10 geographers visited Norfolk for two days on Thursday 16th – Friday 17th May 2024. Thankfully, the rain stopped just as we reached the coast, so after eating lunch at West Runton, we then collected land use and pedestrian data at Sheringham. Because it was overcast, a lot of people were visiting the town rather than the beach, which was ideal for our surveys! The students were investigating whether beach resorts such as Sheringham are busier nearer the beach. The theory is that more resort style shops and services are nearer the sea and so will attract more visitors.

We were looked after well overnight at Sheringham Youth Hostel and after a large breakfast, travelled east along the coast to Cley-next-the-Sea. The sun was shining which made the collection of the beach data really enjoyable. The students were investigating whether there are distinctive beach features on this particular beach, linked to wave type and processes of erosion at work.

Students have been given a certificate congratulating them on their enthusiasm and engagement over the two days and ‘rock person’ as a memento!

Celebrating Movement: A Journey Through Mental Health Awareness Week

May 17, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

Celebrating Movement through Mental Health Awareness Week 2024

I am thrilled to share with you the highlights of our Mental Health Awareness Week 2024. This year’s theme was “Movement: moving more for our mental health”, and it was truly inspiring to see our school community come together to embrace this theme.

Our KS3 students started each day positively by contributing to a Gratitude Wall/Poster, jotting down what they were grateful for. This simple act of acknowledging the good in our lives can have a profound impact on our mental health.

We also had Emotion Charades, where students acted out different emotions, and their peers guessed what they were. This fun activity helped students better understand and express their feelings.

Journaling Reflections was another activity that encouraged students to reflect on their experiences with movement and mindfulness throughout the week. They pondered on how different forms of movement made them feel and how they could incorporate more mindful movement into their daily lives for improved mental health.

We introduced some super easy stretches that students could do right at their desks. Neck rolls, shoulder rolls, wrist stretches, upper back stretches, and seated twists, helping everyone stay relaxed and focused throughout the day.

Our KS4 students also participated in the Gratitude Wall/Poster and Journaling Reflections activities. They also completed an Active Quiz, where they had to perform a physical activity to answer each question.

Our older students incorporated Mindful Movement Breaks into their study periods, including stretching and deep breathing exercises. These breaks were great for staying energised and focused, proving that a little movement goes a long way.

Our incredible staff really stepped up to make lunchtimes special. From stepping into the rhythm of dance with Ms Cameron, wandering with nature with Mr Underwood, going for a sponsored walk or jog with Mr Griffiths, to exercising their minds in quick-thinking challenges with Mr Kench in the Brain Olympics!

And let’s not forget the wonderful massages that Oakland’s College students provided our staff for their wellbeing. It was a much deserved moment of relaxation and rejuvenation!

It has been a wonderful week. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for supporting Mental Health Awareness Week 2024.

Informative Week for Young Carers

May 15, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

Busy but informative week for our Young Carers

This week Young Carers have had the opportunity to hear a talk from Sarah Carroll from Manchester University on product design and to have a go at building models during  the Tuesday lunchtime Drop In session in school. Sarah gave out bags and torches from the university and chatted to the Young Carers and their supporters about their school life. It was really interesting to hear about projects she has been involved in from playgrounds to clothing promotions.

On Wednesday, our Year 7 and 8 Young Carers had a confidence workshop run by Mrs McKinnell. Pupils found out about different strategies for building confidence and dealing with the unhelpful thoughts that can clutter our minds when we feel stressed. All pupils received a goodie bag and hopefully went away with some ideas to try out.

Many thanks to Sarah Carroll and Mrs McKinnell!

Netball Super League Trip 2024

May 10, 2024/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

BHGS travel to Copper Box Arena London for Netball Super League – London Pulse v Surrey Storm

On Friday 10th May, 53 BHGS pupils attended the Copper Box Arena to watch the Netball Super League (NSL) fixture – London Pulse v Surrey Storm.

The rollercoaster of a game was extremely fast paced and high scoring that you could not look away from the court in fear of missing a goal! At the end of Q1, London Pulse had a slim lead of 17-15. In Q2, Surrey Storm upped their game and tied the quarter keeping a gap of 2 goals with a score of 32-30. The intensity of the game did not disappoint in Q3 as everything was still to fight for with London Pulse narrowly extending their lead to 45-41 goals. In Q4, both teams showed grit and determination to win the ball and keep the scoreboard ticking over. With a crowd of 2,500 and continuous support and chants of ‘London Pulse, London Pulse’ echoing around the arena, the Pulse squad fed off this energy and increased the lead with a full time score of 58-53 goals.

All BHGS pupils were a credit to the school, making the evening an enjoyable experience for all. With the increasing coverage of the NSL, the game was televised and some of our pupils made it onto the TV! At the end of the game our pupils also had the opportunity to meet many of the London Pulse squad, receiving autographs and taking pictures with the players. It was wonderful to hear how many pupils were inspired by the level of play, to which some are now seeking clubs to join outside of school.

The trip would not have been possible without the support of staff members also giving up their free time to attend and supervise the students. A big thanks to Miss Cameron, Miss Rollings and Miss Andreone for enabling this to happen.

Here is a snippet of what one of our pupils had to say –

‘The super league netball match at the Copper Box Arena was awesome. The service was good and the game was epic. I loved the tension between the teams and you could see every bit of the game from the seats we were in. Even though the match was an hour, it felt like 5 mins as it was so fast paced!  The staff were really kind and the arena was easy to navigate without getting lost.’

I hope to organise more NSL fixtures in the future, so keep your eyes peeled!

Miss Nelson

Learning about Local English Reformation in St Albans Abbey

May 10, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

A Level History students consolidate their knowledge of the reformation in St Albans Abbey

On the 9th of May 2024, our A-Level History class went to St Albans Cathedral to learn about its historical importance during the Tudor period, which is what we are currently studying. Upon arrival, we met Judy who gave us a tour around the Cathedral and gave us further information on the Reformation and the impact it had locally. She was very enthusiastic and answered all of our questions with great knowledge. It was very interesting to learn how Henry VIII’s break from Rome impacted the nation and our local area and it put its vast scale into perspective. The highlight for me was the wall paintings. The cathedral had used laser technology to showcase their original colours which had been destroyed during the dissolution of monasteries.

Year 8 Maths Team Challenge

May 3, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

Year 8 Maths Team Challenge

On the 2nd May, four Year 8 students took part in a Maths Team Challenge against other Hertfordshire schools. The team, Shakti P, Shruti G, Victoria S and Daniella E, achieved excellent results in this countywide competition and are through to the final in June. The challenge involves solving mathematical puzzles, a memory round and estimation questions. The team threw themselves into the challenge, determined to enjoy themselves and showed great teamwork. Like true mathematicians, there was some heated debate on the best approach to some of the questions, which led to excellent results. Well done to everyone involved for getting through to the final!

BATs Second Successful Performance

May 3, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

Bishop’s Acting Troupe performs another thought provoking piece.

On 2nd May, the BATs (Bishop Acting Troupe) successfully performed their second play: Find a Partner! by Miriam Battye. The students worked extremely hard on this relevant but humorous story that parodied today’s obsession with reality television. Preparing since September, the troupe had the audience laughing whilst raising some poignant questions about modern society. The performance received rave reviews with the troupe going from strength to strength. Don’t worry if you missed it, the BATs will be performing the same piece for the Expressive Arts Showcase on 10th July. For anyone wanting to join the BATs, look out for information about the next round of auditions.

Careers: A Taste of the World of Work

May 2, 2024/in Alumni, Careers, General News/by BHGS

Year 8 and Year 9 get a taste of the World of Work

Bishop’s was firmly focused on Careers this Monday when our Year 8 cohort set off to experience their first day in the world of work as part of our Work Shadowing programme. The Year 8s had been tasked with developing their first career skill of problem solving/creativity – finding their own placement for the day through their own network of family and friends. This task may have included finding out what Dad “really does at work” or getting a “lovely lunch” from Mum in her workplace! Some Year 8s embarked on new environments from local retailers and nurseries to the fast-paced London life complete with train travel. All Year 8s were expected to ask questions about the roles they viewed and to consider what career skills would be developed in these jobs. This is a first step in considering environments they may want to work in and will lead onto our future careers programme events.

A year on in our Careers Programme, we found the Year 9s actively involved in a Career Skills Day being delivered in school. A panel of local employers gave up their whole day to run a carousel of activities from communication, to project management involving a first step into the world of interviewing and assessing their portfolio of skills. Our local corporates included: Tesco, Morgan Sindall, Computacenter and Pay point. Our resident Careers Counsellor Mrs Osman was also on hand to explain the help she can provide to guide our pupils in their “futures” decisions!

To finish the day, some of our own Alumnae came back to talk to the next generation of Bishop’s pupils. They presented on their career journeys from their time at Bishops’ to their steps into the outside world. Our presenters were from para-legal, surveying and voluntary sector backgrounds. It was a busy and enlightening day all round for our Key Stage three pupils!
