Ready Steady Cook with House Franklin

January 31, 2024/in General News, House Franklin/by BHGS

Bringing together staff and students in a fun cooking showdown, the Staff vs. Pupil Ready Steady Cook Challenge!

At Bishops we recently hosted a fun, lively but challenging lunch time House event that brought together staff and students in a fun and competitive atmosphere: the Staff vs. Pupil Cook-Off! Modelled after the popular television show ‘Ready Steady Cook,’ our cook-off challenged our Year 10 Franklin Form Tutor, Mr. Goodall and Mrs. Wright, our Food teacher, against two of his form members, Willow W and Imogen W, challenging them to create delicious dishes using a selection of mystery ingredients. With only a limited amount of time on the clock, teamwork and quick thinking were essential for success.

From a variety of different ingredients, the two teams had to think on their feet to incorporate them into their dishes. As the clock ticked towards the end, Mr Goodall showed his creative cooking skills while the students were confident they would beat Mr Goodall and Mrs Wright in this challenge. The food hall buzzed with energy as teams rushed to put the finishing touches on their creations. Miss Jackson, Mrs Alliot and Mrs Mitchell; esteemed members of the school community evaluated each dish based on taste, creativity, and teamwork. But there could only be one winner and the students took victory this year. Well done Willow W and Imogen W.

Parallel Histories Day of Debate

January 26, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

Year 11 and Year 12 tackle Irish History with JFS and JCoSS.

Parallel Histories is a charity that offers a new way to study the history of conflict – history which is still contested, controversial and relevant. The debate day challenges students to examine historical evidence and debate alternative interpretations before coming to their own view on controversial topics. These are skills which not only help young people with the study of history, but also prepare them to become active citizens who embrace the Bishop’s values of teamwork and respect. Our team of 8 students prepared to debate the Irish Famine and Partition of Ireland. Plus, a ‘surprise’ motion ‘Was Margaret Thatcher a Great Leader?’ The non-competitive environment allowed students to collaborate with peers from other schools in an informal, supportive manner.

Bletchley Park

January 26, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

Year 9 solve cyphers and discover the home of British codebreaking

On the 25th of January, Year 9 went on a trip to Bletchley Park, a vital site during World War 2 due to people decoding secret messages sent from countries that opposed Britain. Bletchley Park is situated between Cambridge and Oxford which are the homes of the two best Universities during that time. In our Workshop, we had to solve enigma cyphers through different methods, enigma cyphers were used by Germany to get messages across different locations.

At Bletchley Park, we were sent on a guided tour where we got told about the cryptologists that used to work there, mainly all the cryptologists were females, because of the war all the men had to go out and fight. While we were told about the cryptologists, some of us were given hats and scarves to represent people from that time. There were two Navy seal hats, one army general hat and a scarf that would usually be worn by a professor at Cambridge.

Lastly, we were shown the Bombe machine which was a machine used by Britain to decode the enigma cyphers that Germany sent. Before the Bombe machine was created British cryptographers worked around the clock to solve the Enigma cyphers so Alan Turning created the Bombe machine to speed up the decryption process. The Bombe machine was developed from a device known as the “bomba” which had been designed in Poland by cryptologist Marian Rejewski.

We learned so much on our visit to Bletchley Park!

World Religion Day

January 22, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

The Bishop’s community prioritises understanding, empathy, and inclusivity by facilitating discussions, assemblies, and displays that celebrate diversity and promote religious tolerance and acceptance within both the school and wider community.

On the week commencing 22nd January, students took part in form time activities and assemblies in promoting World Religion Day.

In form time, students discussed and wrote answers down for the following questions in forms: – What are the benefits of living in a diverse multi-faith community? – How can education help bridge gaps between different religious beliefs and promote understanding? – What are some challenges faced in a multi-faith society, and how can we address them? – How can we promote religious tolerance and acceptance in our school and community? – Why is it important to respect and understand religions different from our own? The answers have helped make a display outside the RE classroom as a reminder of what World Religion Day means for us. The students have written fantastic answers showing the importance of a multi-faith society.

The Equality and Diversity Committee presented assemblies during the week as a reminder of the importance of celebrating diversity. Diversity is one of our greatest strengths as a global community. World Religion Day celebrates religious diversity, highlighting the beauty and uniqueness of each tradition. By embracing diversity, we enrich our lives and create a more vibrant and inclusive world.

Our Bishop’s 360 is a fantastic guide to how we can help better ourselves and preparing students for the future. During this week, students have added to their character by having ‘regard for ourselves and others’. As a Bishop’s community, we are committed to fostering understanding, empathy, and inclusivity. We believe it’s crucial to embrace and appreciate the multitude of religions and worldviews that shape our community. It encourages us to learn about different religions, engage in meaningful conversations, and cultivate a spirit of harmony amidst our differences.

Thank you to all staff and students who helped contribute to this week!

Year 7 Science Museum Trip

January 10, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

Pupils explored the evolution of technology!

The Year 7 pupils thoroughly enjoyed their trip to the Science Museum in London, where they immersed themselves in the captivating world of technological evolution. The interactive exhibits and engaging displays sparked their curiosity, allowing them to explore the history of inventions and advancements. From the earliest innovations to the latest breakthroughs, the students were enthralled by the dynamic journey through time. Siabi D from 7 Austen said: “To find out that most people started their businesses out of their garage is amazing. For example with Ed Roberts he started a business from his garage; he sold radios and model rockets. In the end he made the first microcomputer -The Altair 8800- this happened in 1974. Ada Lovelace completed a similar experiment in 1843. She had said that her computer might only be able to do mathematics but later on it would do greater things and as she said it became true’.
