Parallel Histories Day of Debate
Year 11 and Year 12 tackle Irish History with JFS and JCoSS.
Parallel Histories is a charity that offers a new way to study the history of conflict – history which is still contested, controversial and relevant. The debate day challenges students to examine historical evidence and debate alternative interpretations before coming to their own view on controversial topics. These are skills which not only help young people with the study of history, but also prepare them to become active citizens who embrace the Bishop’s values of teamwork and respect. Our team of 8 students prepared to debate the Irish Famine and Partition of Ireland. Plus, a ‘surprise’ motion ‘Was Margaret Thatcher a Great Leader?’ The non-competitive environment allowed students to collaborate with peers from other schools in an informal, supportive manner.
