GCSE History comes alive at St Albans Abbey

November 14, 2023/in General News/by BHGS

Trip to understand the Normanisation of the Church

To help with our Normans unit in History, Year 10 historians had the pleasure of visiting St Albans Cathedral on November 14th 2023. We learnt about the Normanisation of the Church and how this helped William establish control over England. The day began with a talk about the wall paintings, which was popular among the girls. They learned about how paintings were made, who the people were in the paintings and the significance of each one. The paintings were about 500 years old, so naturally, a lot of it had faded and it was difficult to make out much of it. The staff at the cathedral brought the paintings back to life with their projectors so that we could see what they looked like in the past. Everyone was then split into 4 different groups with one guide each, who showed us all of the historical objects from that time period and taught us about shrines, archbishops, monks and more. We were fascinated by all of the artefacts and all of the information about where they had come from and the significance of each one. By the end of the day, it was safe to say that everyone had learned a lot.

St Albans Cathedral, thank you for having us!

Year 11 get a taste of the A level sciences with beetroot, tennis balls and mirrors!

November 10, 2023/in General News/by BHGS

Year 11 scientists enjoyed performing A level practical activities as part of their A level taster lessons.

The week before our Sixth Form Information Evening, Year 11 scientists had a taste of the many subjects we offer at A Level. In Science, pupils joined A Level taster lessons in Biology, Physics and Chemistry by performing 3 experiments that explored different aspects of the A level courses. In Biology we looked at cell membranes and how complex their structures are and what factors can disrupt them. We used beetroot to see what effect temperature and detergents would have on the integrity of the membranes and we were able to use colorimeters to obtain quantitative results. For Physics we measured the time taken to drop different sports balls from the second to ground floor, being careful the balls did not hit anyone! We used this data to work out the acceleration of free fall. Finally, in Chemistry we performed a test for the organic compounds called aldehydes, which resulted in a silver mirror forming around the test tubes as a positive result. All the activities were great fun and showed how A level builds on our GCSE knowledge and the equipment and skills required for key stage 5.

Murder at the University of Hertfordshire

November 9, 2023/in General News/by BHGS

Year 12 A-Level Law students explore the option of pursuing Law in higher education with a visit to the University of Hertfordshire

On 9th November 2023, Year 12 students of A-Level Law visited the University of Hertfordshire to participate in sessions relating to higher education. They heard from current students about studying at university, in particular what it would be like to study law. Students from the University ran an informative session about police powers of stop and search including some role play and identifying whether the stop and search was lawful. Then the students enjoyed a sample lecture on murder.

A highlight of the trip was a mock bail hearing in the University’s replica Crown Court, in which a student was placed in the dock (temporarily!). Students from the university played the defence and prosecution lawyers and the Year 12 students got to be the judge and decide whether bail should be granted. The trip ended with the Year 12 students dressing up in wigs and gowns, a career goal for many and an inspiring end to the day!

Parents enjoy an evening of Biology!

November 6, 2023/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Parents enjoyed working with their children, looking at their cells and DNA during an evening of Biology, as part of Biology Week 2023 at BHGS

On the evening of Thursday 19th October, parents joined their children in the Biology labs at Bishop’s and completed a variety of activities centred around cells and DNA. Families performed a cheek swab and looked at their cells using a light microscope. After practising how to use a micropipette, everyone had a chance to load some DNA into an agarose gel and perform DNA gel electrophoresis. Bishop’s students finished the evening constructing a DNA bracelet whilst parents listened to famous forensic cases and how they were solved using DNA technology.

I presented one of the cases along with my fellow year 13 biologists. We also helped with all the practical activities. The evening was great fun and all the families performed the practical activities like professionals- we were very impressed!

Geology in the Peak District

November 4, 2023/in General News/by BHGS

Year 9 visit the beautiful landscapes of the Peak District

On 3rd and 4th November, a group of 46 Year 9 students travelled to Castleton to experience first-hand how the limestone and gritstone geology has shaped the beautiful landscapes that we have studied in lessons. We were blessed with dry weather which meant that the students were able to enjoy the beautiful views of the limestone and grit stone landscape. After eating our packed lunches at Castleton Youth Hostel, we travelled a short distance to Burbage where there are amazing outcrops of gritstone. We spent three hours abseiling and weasling, which involves clambering over rocks and squeezing through small spaces between rocks! Everyone had a brilliant time and were proud of their achievements.

We stayed the night at Castleton Youth hostel and early on Saturday morning, we travelled to the Blue John mines. Blue John stone is only found in one small area of Treak Cliff Hill, near Castleton. Blue John is a semi precious gemstone which was first discovered over two thousand years ago by the Romans. Blue John is a rare variety of the mineral Calcium Fluorite, with distinctive, purple, blue and golden yellow banding, which runs through the stone and makes each Blue John gemstone truly unique. We walked down a series of steps and tunnels, down to over 100m below the surface and were able to see the beautiful blue john tone in situ.

We then travelled to Bakewell on our route home, where the famous Bakewell tart is cooked – which turns out to be very different to the traditional iced variety, but tastes just as good!
