Supporting Women’s Football in Wembley
0-0 draw in tense game for Lionesses.
On Saturday 30th November 2024, 45 pupils and 3 staff went by coach to Wembley Stadium to watch the England Women’s Football team – the Lionesses – compete in a friendly fixture vs USA.
This is the second international football fixture the PE department have organised a trip to attend and it was brilliant to see a mix across all year groups with lots of new faces coming along to support our Lionesses at the home of English football.
USA had the majority of the possession in the first half as they created more chances including a goal from captain Lindsay Horan that was disallowed as it was deemed she had ventured offside before finishing a cross from teammate Rose Lavelle.
The drama continued later in the first half as the USA had a penalty decision overturned after the referee deemed the England defender Alex Greenwood had not blocked the ball with her hand as initially thought.
The Lionesses fired more shots and demonstrated better attacking play in the second half creating some excellent opportunities whilst denying the USA team too. It was a frustrating game for both teams with both sets of defenders cancelling out strong attacking opportunities throughout.
The game ended in a fair 0-0 draw – a stark comparison to the 3-2 scoreline and last minute winner we had been treated to vs The Netherlands this time last year!
The pupils and staff left for the coach ride back to school and were ecstatic, a little worn out(!) and freezing cold after temperatures dropped below 0 during the November evening.
As always, every pupil on the trip was a credit to BHGS and it was a pleasure to organise and run this trip to a live women’s sporting fixture. On the way back to the coach, plenty of pupils asking when the next trip was going to be, so the PE department hope there will be another chance to attend a sporting fixture later in the year.
A huge thank you to the following staff for giving up their time to organise and supervise the pupils at this fixture – Miss Cameron, Miss Nelson and Mrs Wright.
If you or other pupils want to get involved and have the opportunity to watch live sport in action with us then please come and see Miss Nelson to get more details on the Superleague Netball trip that will be taking place in May 2025.
