Year 9 visit Gonville and Caius College Cambridge
An inspirational afternoon in Cambridge
12 of our Year 9 academically able students, who have the potential to make an application to very competitive universities, were given the opportunity to visit our link college, Gonville and Caius, at Cambridge University on Tuesday 2nd July 2024. This opportunity is part of our programme to support and stretch highly academic pupils.
Below are some comments from the students: We arrived at the university at about twelve, and went into the dining hall for a three-course lunch. The dining room had many beautiful stained glass windows including one depicting the Venn diagram, as John Venn studied at Gonville and Caius College. Afterwards we went to a lecture hall with some other schools, and one of the university teachers gave a talk about why people go to university and tips on choosing the right subjects to open up opportunities to study post-18.
We were also given the opportunity to ask five of the current university students some questions about their experiences, and then one of the students, Janusha, (studying Medicine) gave us a tour of the College. We were shown the huge library with its beautiful carved domed ceiling, the student bar and walked through the four courts – beautiful gardens and lawns within courtyard areas. In one court, we saw a tile in memory of Steven Hawking, a Fellow of G&C for over 52 years.
I really enjoyed the trip. It was a little intimidating, but really informative and exciting.
