Women in STEM at Sandhurst
Inspiring activities engaged us all
On Thursday 26th September 2019, 15 Year 10 students visited Sandhurst to discover more about careers and opportunities for women in STEM. When we first arrived we were given an information pack about career pathways in STEM industries and were greeted by the army personnel. During the event we participated in a workshop with Xylem, a company that enables their clients worldwide to transport, treat and test water. We learnt about how we are able to access water in our homes and the process of treating and cleaning water. We then went on to take part in an experiment where we tested samples of water to find out the pH, clarity and how much oxygen it contained.
We also had the opportunity to visit stalls, exhibits and take part in many fun activities. For example, I enjoyed visiting many Military stalls where there were teaching us about the machinery, equipment and how it is used. I was especially interested in the Engineering exhibition, where we investigated Virtual Reality to investigate a fictional landscape.
I found the event extremely inspiring and informative, and it has certainly made me think about the wider application of science and maths in an engineering environment. I had the opportunity to discuss careers with a range of different business leaders and was inspired by women who have made it to the top of their field. I would like to thank Sandhurst for hosting the event, and all of the businesses for taking tie to help us understand more about the potential of STEM subjects.
