Steel Pans Workshops
Year 9s have a wonderful time on the steel pans
On three consecutive weeks, two of each of our year 9 Music groups travelled to Mid-Herts Music Centre in order to take part in a Steel Pans Workshop. These free workshops, generously run for our students by Hertfordshire Music Service (HMS), fitted within our Caribbean Music scheme of learning and gave our students an amazing opportunity to perform on ‘tamboo bamboo’ percussion, and a fabulous set of steel pans. The workshop was led by professional steel pan performer, Lindsay Campbell, who inspired our pupils with her demonstrations. It was fantastic to see our students enjoying themselves, engaging in practical music making, and it was lovely to see them learning the music by ear, and developing their aural awareness. They impressed the HMS staff with their concentration and behaviour, as well as in the way that they picked up and learnt the different layers within the music, performing with good ensemble skills.
