Charlie wins the Environment Award at the WH Community Awards Ceremony

February 29, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

Success at the Welwyn Hatfield Community Awards 2024

Charlie-Rose H was short-listed as a finalist for the WH Community Environment Award held at campus West on Wednesday 28/2/24. We are very proud that Charlie was awarded the winning trophy – such a fantastic accolade for the huge contribution Charlie has made to protecting and conserving the the environment. Congratulations Charlie!

Below is the nomination:

Charlie has been a valued member of both the Green Club and Save the World club (Eco Warriors) since she joined Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School 3 years ago. Charlie has attended every weekly meeting, no matter what the weather, rain, snow or sunshine. I can always depend on Charlie turning up and getting stuck in. Charlie is one student that can always be depended upon to take instruction and have a go with no fuss whatsoever, whether the job be clearing the nature pond (a rather smelly and cold job, I must say); planting spring flowering bulbs for the first insects of the year, in the pouring rain; or working inside making bird feeders or nest boxes; we can always count on Charlie being there and giving 100%.

Over the years in the Green Club Charlie has taken part in many of our projects including the upkeep of our gardens, always keeping in mind the benefits for our local wildlife, as well as looking good for our community, building and looking after hedgehog houses, bird feeders, bird nest boxes and our very popular bug hotel (Bishop’s Bugs). She is also passionate about the upkeep and improvement of our nature garden (some may say bramble patch), but Charlie can see the larger picture of the enormous benefits this little area has, not only to our school, but also to Hatfield in general. Every year, Charlie takes part in the RSPB’s Big School Bird Watch. There is so much more and not enough time to say what Charlie has done to help our local wildlife.

As a member of Save the World club, Charlie has also been involved in many projects over the last 3 years, including helping design a sticker asking students and staff to please switch off the classroom lights and the putting these up in every classroom and office throughout the school. Other activities are the regular litter picks and ‘Clean Up Hatfield’ campaigns, making eco bricks , which now form the edge of the flower/vegetable garden around the school pond. Charlie has also participated in making and painting the amazing Minion that takes pride of place at the front of the building outside of reception. This Minion is made from recycled car tyres and is filled with compost from our own compost bins and will be planted with natural wild flowers in the spring to provide not only beauty but a valuable source of food for butterflies, bees and hoverflies.

Charlie has accomplished all this and much more whilst going through some extremely testing times and it has been a delight to see her persevering and becoming more resilient.
