Senior Rounders Teams are District Champions!

June 19, 2023/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Both Year 9 and 10 Rounders teams take the gold at the District tournament.

On Monday 19th June Miss Cameron and Miss Esterhuizen took the Year 9 and 10 Rounders teams to Monks Walk for the District Rounders tournament.

The Year 9 team played Mount Grace and Chancellors in their pool games winning both to progress to the semi finals vs Stanborough. In a close game, our Year 9 team did very well and showed excellent batting skills to really take control of the 2nd innings and progress to the final vs Yavneh. Again, two very similar sides in terms of their fielding skills meant it was a close final up until the last few minutes where BHGS showed good composure and some good catches to finish in 1st place and become District Champions.

The Year 10 team played Onslow and Stanborough in their pool games with both opposition schools testing the BHGS team in different ways. After a few initial nerves by the BHGS team, the girls rallied round and improved their communication to help win both games and progress to the semi finals. The BHGS team continued to improve in confidence and skill level throughout the tournament and won their semi final vs Yavneh to move into the final game vs Onslow. As both teams had played each other in the pool rounds there were a few tactical changes to both fielding sides and placing their hits became even more important in an attempt to try and find space. Both teams did very well in taking advantage of the oppositions mistakes and consistent bowling became the difference between Onslow and the BHGS Year 10 team. In the end, the game was very close but our BHGS Year 10 team emerged as winners and finished the season as District Champions.

A big well done to both teams for their excellent performances – a great way to finish off the year!

Clever creations to combat climate change

June 12, 2023/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Two teams in Year 9 design buildings and bots to help combat the effect of climate change as part of the Industrial Cadets Bronze Awards.

Two groups of Year 9 students have been working with Dr Lota, Dr Bune and Mr Short to design novel ways of overcoming the effects of climate change, as part of the Engineering Development Trust’s Industrial Cadet’s Bronze awards. Both teams had to design a building or equipment that could help with the consequences of climate change or pollution e.g. flooding, plastic pollution. The teams worked hard to develop their ideas, build models, display their work and then present their idea to the judging panel. Each team member had a distinct role within the team and they all worked together to produce an impressive display and discussed their work with great confidence to the judges. An excellent example of developing the Bishop’s 360 collaboration and communication.

Team ‘Industrial Revolutions’ designed a building that used hydraulics to rise up during floods and extended this to collecting the floodwater for use during drought times or in nearby areas where water might be scarce. Team ‘Techettes’ designed a pollution bot, based on an octopus, that could go underwater and remove small plastics that have entered the ocean. Both teams faced challenges whilst completing their projects including having to develop new skills and knowledge and being able to meet all the deadlines. They can now look forward to attending the Graduation and Awards ceremony on the 4th July where they will celebrate with all the other Industrial Cadets, displaying and discussing their work. They will also be able to hear about topical STEM projects, attend industry workshops led by leading experts and have the chance to find out even more about the future career opportunities that are available.

Year 7 create ideas and skills from “larder leftovers”!

June 12, 2023/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Year 7 Careers Event – Sustainability with Tesco

We welcomed Tesco into the school to run a fast paced Careers event on Wednesday morning for Year 7.

Our Year 7s were put through their paces by being given a work-related task brief to complete in just two hours. This task was to design a product and advertising campaign message for using our wasted food sustainably. The task included the big issue of our futures – how to make our lifestyles sustainable – a great challenge for the young generation coming up. Also, the challenge set was designed to help develop key career skills and showed our Year 7s what employers are looking for in the future. The tasks focused on team working, problem solving, initiative, creativity and presentation/communications skills.

Our Year 7s rose to the challenge and Paul Grogan, from the Tesco Development Programmes team, commented “Bishop’s teams delivered some of our best ideas and presentations to date”. High praise from a large local employer. The sustainable products designed by our pupils ranged from new ideas on roast dinners to international themed dishes. The advertising food stories covered poignant moments with grannies to celebration of birthdays. The best designs all unlocked a prize of a £5 Tesco voucher.

Year 7 had a fun and informative morning understanding how they can help build a sustainable future by reducing food waste. Also, our Food Tech team popped in to see a wide range and originality of food ideas and all teachers witnessed the effective pulling together of teams and confident presentation skills. We have some innovative cooks and confident speakers among our Year 7 cohort!

St Albans Abbey and the Reformation

June 5, 2023/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

How did the Reformation change St Albans Abbey?

On the 25th of May 2023 the two Year 12 history classes completed a trip to St Albans Cathedral in Hertfordshire.

Upon arrival at the cathedral, we were greeted by the magnificent sight of the towering medieval structure; we were given freedom to roam the building and were in awe of the stunning stained-glass windows, intricately carved stone pillars and the surrounding grounds. Led by knowledgeable guides, we then embarked on a comprehensive tour delving into the rich history and architectural beauty of the cathedral. We learned about the cathedral’s origins dating back to the Roman era, its transformation during the Norman Period and its significance as the burial of St Alban, Britain’s first Christian Martyr.

As we progressed through history,  our guides discussed how the Cathedral was directly affected by the changes during the Reformation (the shift from Catholicism to Protestantism) as it transitioned from an Abbey to a Cathedral. During the Dissolution of the Monasteries, initiated by Henry VIII, St Albans Abbey was desolated, monastic life ceased, and the abbey’s land and possessions were confiscated by the crown in 1539. The shrines of the saints were demolished, the relics of Saint Alban lost and the only standing window was that marked with the royal crown. Continuing through history, we learnt that the cathedral became a centre for the establishment of Protestant practices and teachings during the reign of King Edward VI and underwent changes in its liturgy, religious artwork, and practices, aligning with the emerging Protestant faith. The tour further highlighted the significance of St Albans Cathedral during the reign of Queen Mary I, known as “Bloody Mary”; she aimed to restore Catholicism and suppress Protestantism in England. St Albans Cathedral experienced a temporary reversion to Catholic practices during this period.

The tour continued as we explored Shrines of Saint Alban and Amphibalus ;we were told of the stories it held within old and new. Following the Reformation, the church had to be replenished and this process began in the Victorian Era and is still continuing to modern day – the architecture included tributes to Covid and personal family stories of modern-day church users. We learned the role of the cathedral in the community and how this has changed overtime from a medical facility, place of pilgrimage and the place of residence for monks to now being multipurpose, having everything from live gigs to Roman Catholic Mass. Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School’ choir has been singing there around Christmas time for many years as part of the Willow Foundation Christmas Carol Concert.

The trip provided us with a first-hand experience of the abbey’s historical significance and its connection to the Reformation. We gained a deeper appreciation for the transformative impact of the Tudor period on religious beliefs and practices. We left the cathedral not only enriched in knowledge of the cathedral’s architectural beauty and cultural importance but also a broadened awareness of the historical events that unfolded within its walls.

Is Plastic Fantastic?

May 18, 2023/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Year 7 enjoy an enlightening talk by author and eco-journalist Sarah Roberts

In 2021-22, Save the World Club participated in some of the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ campaigns and were selected by Scholastic to receive a free workshop with environmental expert and eco-journalist Sarah Roberts.

Sarah is also an author and refers to herself as a ‘storyteller’. Sarah has travelled the world – from coastal rainforests to the African bush – working with wildlife everywhere she goes. On her adventures she discovered that even in the most isolated ecosystems on the planet, you cannot escape the impact of pollution on the natural world. In 2014, she set up an education outreach project to raise awareness of the issue, and published her first children’s book, Somebody Swallowed Stanley, which has been used in schools around the world to teach young people about plastic pollution.

We were delighted to welcome Sarah via Zoom to speak to Year 7 on Thursday 18th May. Sarah’s informative talk engaged and inspired the students. They were shocked to hear that every turtle has plastic in their body due to plastic pollution in our oceans. Also, that so many salmon die before they reach their breeding ground because of the micro-plastics they have swallowed.

Year 7 were brilliant at asking Sarah lots of questions and have been inspired to create a display, which will be up on the Humanities office window after half term!

Lost in the wilderness – The Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition!

May 14, 2023/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Year 9 adventurers test their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh ‘Expedition’ skills in Wymondley Wood

On May the 13th and 14th, our Year 9 Cohort of “The Duke of Edinburgh” adventurers descended onto Wymondley Wood to participate in the ‘Expedition’ aspect of their DofE course. This is just one of the four sections of their training that students have had to complete for their Bronze DofE Award.

Students were tasked with completing a 16km trek on both Saturday and Sunday, around the countryside of Hertfordshire. The students had to navigate using a map and compass to successfully negotiate their routes, relying only on each other and their team. Not only this – but they had to carry all of the equipment they would require to be self-sufficient. This included tents for camping, cooking equipment and ingredients to enable them to cook their own meals.

Luckily, despite the rest of the week being gloomy, the weather held on Saturday, and Sunday actually with some sunshine! Overall the teams did fantastically, with all of our students working together and enjoying the adventure!

Below are quotes from a couple of our students who participated in the award:

Molly P (9 Austin): “In my DofE experience, I had a lot of fun. DofE was very hard, but was an adventure. You learn to rely on the people around you and in your group, as teamwork is a large part of completing the expedition. For example, you need to evenly share the weight you have to carry in your bags, set up your tent, plan and navigate your own routes and plan and cook your meals. It was not all hard work though – you also have time to relax and spend time with other groups. In the evening after setting up, we all sat around playing games and later on, everyone sat around the campfire roasting marshmallows. The walking part of the expedition was definitely hard, especially on day 2 when you just want to go home. But if you push through, it’s definitely all worth it in the end, and I am so glad I completed it.”

Arabella A (9 Hadid) “My experience of DofE was fun. The walk was enjoyable and we did things like play in parks along the way and walked through the woods. Although the bags were heavy, and people’s feet were hurting, it was still a great experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The weather was nice and there was great scenery along our route. We saw other groups along the way and talked with them as we continued walking. The overall experience was one I won’t forget and I would definitely recommend it for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.”

Thank you to all of the staff who volunteered their entire weekend to support the event, and a massive well done to all participants who demonstrated resilience, teamwork and determination throughout. The students and staff have put in a great deal of work leading up to this achievement over the past year, and we are incredibly proud of everyone who was involved.

GCSE Food Students take a Talk Eat Walk Eat tour of London

May 12, 2023/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

We took our Food GCSE students on a journey through some of London’s most popular food destinations with a chance to learn about the history and culture of the area. It was a school trip they will never forget!

Last week, we took our Year 10 GCSE students on an exciting school trip on a food tour to London. We took them on a journey through some of London’s most popular food destinations with a chance to learn about the history and culture of the area. It was a school trip they will never forget!

We started off at Spitalfields Market which is one of London’s oldest and most famous food markets founded in 1197. Our students learnt about the history of the market and how it all started from a hospital originally! The tour took students from Spitalfields Market to Banglatown on to Brick Lane where they learnt about the culture and history of this interesting area. They all had the opportunity to taste a variety of different food from a Bangladeshi Deli. They tried Samosa, Pakora, Chicken Tikka Rolls and Onion Bhajis. Next we headed to Truman’s Brewery and discovered it was once home to London’s largest brewery which started in 1669. It is now East London’s choice of destination for the public and businesses and the students could see how it has changed so much. After building up an appetite we walked to a beautiful chocolate shop called Dark Sugars where we heard the story of its owner, an African lady called Nyanga who began her business in Spitalfields Market with a small amount of truffles. The word spread amongst the local residents and market visitors that an African woman was bringing a taste of Africa in the form of chocolates. After many successful years, Nyanga packed up her truffles and spent three years researching cocoa on her family’s farm. She returned bringing her experience  from Ghana to the streets of East London. The students were told the story from cocoa bean to their chocolate bags and how chocolates are made. They were fascinated! We were able to choose a variety of chocolates to sample and a rather large hot chocolate!

During our tour we were amazed and in awe of the street art painted by some very talented artists and spotted broccoli on the walls outside of shops and on walls. We learnt the history of the ‘Broccoli Man’ who has an art shop in London selling broccoli in picture frames! It all started when the ‘Broccoli Man’ once had an idea to paint whole broccoli and display them on the streets of London which became so popular amongst Chinese tourists that he was asked to create them as pictures. This has now spread worldwide and he is selling ‘broccoli art’ all over the world!

The next stop of the tour the students had the opportunity to visit ‘Beigel Bake’ which provided the historic tastes and traditions of the Jewish East End, mixed with the flavours of an ever evolving multi-cultural community. We tried Salt Beef Bagels which were enjoyed by everyone. ‘Beigel Bake’ is a popular choice by Prince William and Princess Kate who visit there often and we were very happy to be sharing this experience too. We wondered why ‘Beigel’ was spelt differently. We learnt that ‘Beigels’ are made the traditional way being boiled first to get that chewy texture, modern bagels are not always boiled.

Amongst many other tastes and delights of more food vendors, we finished off with a Bubble Tea at a Taiwan café which we think was the perfect end to a fabulous tour.

The Talk Eat Walk Eat tour was a magnificent way for students to explore the London food scene and learn about the city’s history and multi culture at the same time. The students tasted some of London’s most delicious food while gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation for the people and places that make London such an exciting place.

Year 12 Geography Dorset Fieldtrip

April 28, 2023/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Year 12 Geographers in Swanage

Year 12 geographers travelled to Dorset on Tuesday 25th April till Friday 28th April 2023 to complete their 4-day fieldwork, collecting primary data for their NEA coursework. We arrived in the beautiful resort town of Swanage in the early afternoon and collected beach data before settling in at Swanage Youth hostel. The youth hostel is on a steep hill overlooking Swanage Bay with amazing views of the coastline.

On the Wednesday, we all spent the day at Studland bay sand dunes, the only sand dune system in the UK with a W-E alignment. The location enabled students to collect data from all stages of the sand dune system, so that data could be collected on plant species and abundance, plant height, pH, soil moisture, wind speed and air temperature.

On the Thursday we split into two groups, one group travelling to the northern end of Chesil Beach to West Bexington, Burton Bradstock and Abbotsbury, and the other group visiting the Isle of Portland, Chesil Beach (where the spit leaves the mainland) and Weymouth. Students were investigating the changing beach characteristics from west to east along the Dorset coast.

The fieldtrip was the first time students have been able to stay away on a residential since the Covid pandemic. The students were brilliant and everyone had a brilliant time. Swanage youth hostel looked after us really well and we will be returning there again next year!

Bishop’s Musicians Perform at Lady Salisbury’s Coffee Morning

March 28, 2023/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Talented musicians perform at Lady Salisbury’s Coffee Morning at Hatfield House.

On Tuesday 28th March, six of our talented musicians braved a rainy walk down to Hatfield House’s Old Palace in order to perform at Lady Salisbury’s Coffee Morning. This was a fantastic opportunity to represent Bishop’s in splendid surroundings. The coffee morning was to raise money for Breaks Manor Youth & Community Centre & St. Etheldreda’s. Our audience was treated to wonderful performances from the following students: Holly armer and Ellie B (Year 11) singing a vocal duet from the musical Evita, Em W (Year 9) performing a beautiful piece of Grieg on the piano, Kiruga J (Year 11) performing a movement from Reade’s Victorian Kitchen Garden Suite on the clarinet, sensitively accompanied by Grace M (Year 9) on the piano, and Sophie G (Year 10) singing Popular from Wicked. The girls did themselves and the school proud, giving some very polished and confident performances. A number of members of the public commented on how beautifully they played, and how it was lovely to also hear some instrumentalists performing at the coffee morning for the first time. Congratulations to all six performers!

Year 12 Biologists are welcomed to the Wellcome Genome Institute

March 21, 2023/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Biologists learn about the latest sequencing technologies at the Wellcome Sanger Institute

On Tuesday 21st March, we spent the day at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. We learnt about the human genome project and what genomes are being sequenced today. There is a lot of research looking at malaria and cancer as well as a new project called the ‘tree of life’ which aims to sequence all multicellular species in the UK to explore the diversity of complex organisms. We heard from scientists working at the institute and saw the latest sequencing machines. We saw a hard copy of the human genome consisting of many volumes of books and had our photo taken underneath them! It was a great day where we learnt a lot about genes, sequencing and the latest therapies.
