Year 6 Transition
Welcome to our new pupils and their parents who have chosen Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School for their 7 year journey
This section of our website will hopefully be useful to you as new parents/carers of our new Year 7 intake. The information below will be updated regularly from now until the end of the month of July preceding our new pupils’ September start. We are very pleased to learn that your child has been offered a place at Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School for September. To complete their registration, you now need to complete the online admission form with information about your child and give your consent as to your and their chosen preferences throughout their time at the school. Transferring to Secondary School is an important milestone in a pupil’s life and at BHGS we aim to make this transition as smooth as possible whilst establishing continuity from Year 6 to 7 with a consistency of approach and challenge. As your child has been offered a place at BHGS, you will receive a letter advising you of the events that we are planning for you and your child. The Welwyn Garden City & Hatfield Schools Partnership team is also organising online support sessions for parents to ask all the questions they may have about their child’s transition from primary school to Bishop’s Hatfield. You are personally invited to book a session on the dates below. Simply scan the QR code or copy the link in your browser: During May and June, pupils receive a visit from a member of the transition team when we explain what it is like to be a Bishop’s pupil, the expectations and ethos of the school. We are also in regular contact with our feeder Primary Schools and exchanging as much information as possible to get an accurate educational ‘picture’ of your daughter. All Hertfordshire pupils also get to attend their future secondary school for a Year 7 Transition Day in July which takes place on Thursday 10th July (9:30am to 2pm) in 2025. In addition to meeting pupils at their various primary schools, we have also put together a New Parents/Carers Information Booklet and a Pupil Transition Booklet which we hope will cover a lot of the questions that we receive from both parents and pupils when we carry out our school visits. We would encourage your child to read the Pupil Transition Booklet Transition activities and competitions mentioned in the booklet are handed out and explained to your child on Transition Day (10th July 2025). They include a ‘Postcard to my Form Tutor’ activity to complete over the Summer which they should bring with them to their first day at BHGS in September, as well as a Bookmark Competition organised by our Library. Our school library is an amazing place and we are keen for our pupils to continue their reading through the Summer holiday. So our School Librarians have put together a brilliant reading list for the pupils to have a look at plus a great competition to design a bookmark for the library. Try to encourage your child to get involved and win some of their first House Points when they start in September. For more information about starting secondary school and using our library, please check our Transition Portal Before your child starts in September, you will need to ensure that you: We also encourage you to make yourself familiar with the following information which will help make your child’s transition smoother. Remember to label all personal property, uniform and PE kit. If you order a school labelling pack from Easy2name, our school will get 20% cashback which we will use to purchase much needed school resources that will in turn benefit your child. You will get free delivery. For more information, please check our Support Us website page and quote Discount Code FR-BHATFIELD-30. On their induction day in September, your child will find out which Tutor group they have been allocated. This will have been carefully considered based on the information sent to us by your Primary School and our staff visits before the Summer. Their Tutor group will also indicate which House a pupil is in throughout their seven-year journey with us (either Austen, Franklin, Hadid, Parr or Seacole). During their first few days at BHGS, all Year 7 pupils engage in a variety of Tutor group activities and they also learn about life at secondary school. (The following induction schedule will be updated at the end of the Summer 2025) At secondary school, your child will be able to make decisions on a number of food options throughout the day, from healthy breakfast to hearty lunches and salad bar or ‘grab-and-go’ food in our dining room or our outside canopy, during and after school.
