Science, PE and Food team up to win National Science Competition!
Year 7 and 8 students design a new Olympic Sport, create a heart healthy 3 course meal and build an innovative model of the heart.
As part of British Science Week 2021, the pharmaceutical company Bayer organised a National Science Competition to promote healthy hearts. The competition involved 3 tasks: design a completely new Olympic sport that would get your heart pumping, create a 3 course meal to ensure a healthy heart and design a heart model using any type of material. Groups of Year 7 and 8 students managed to complete all tasks within 2 weeks as lockdown had tightened the window of opportunity to get all the tasks completed. Heart models were made out of clay, plasticine, papier-maché and cardboard. Some groups managed to practice their Olympic sport and cook their healthy meal. Ms Cameron, Ms Veale and Dr Bune were not very impressed with the quality of the entries and the enthusiasm the girls showed. The teams ended up winning the first prize of £2,000 worth of sports and physiological science equipment! Well done to all participants!
