House Seacole
Mary Seacole was a Jamaican-born business woman and nurse who provided care for sick and wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. Her work included visiting the battlefield, sometimes under fire, to nurse the wounded. She faced discrimination, being of mixed Jamaican and Scottish heritage, but she was determined to help, and she extended her kindness and care to enemy soldiers. In 2003, Mary Seacole was voted by the Greatest Black Briton by the British public.
“Mary Seacole is a renowned and celebrated nurse pioneer… She epitomises what can be accomplished when you have vision, resilience, determination and passion.” Joan Myers OBE – Child Nurse Consultant
