A walk down Brick Lane
Brick Lane is a warm, friendly and inclusive place to experience a wonderful mix of modern and old cultures
Year 12 geographers visited Brick Lane on Wednesday 3rd July to give them a personal lived experience perspective of this vibrant area of London. Students made voice notes entitled ‘My Walk down Brick Lane’ and took video footage and photos to record their own ‘lived experience’. Some students visited the local shops and cafes to interview workers about their experiences of living and working in Brick Lane over the years. This gave superb insights into the sense of place and the identity of Brick Lane from different people’s perspective and how the area has changed. We loved being immersed in the creative and vintage vibe and view the range of graffiti art all the way down the street, showing how dynamic and inclusive the area has become. The overarching message was that there is a positive and strong community spirit where everyone looks out for each other and a place where people from different cultures and backgrounds have become integrated, rather than separated into individual diaspora.
It was interesting to hear about how social media has become very important in the marketing of businesses e.g. Vintage Paradise. A lively, fun conference called ‘Mad Fest’ was in full swing, where business people were able to meet and share ideas in a festival style atmosphere and hear inspirational speakers. This really sums up the vibrant, colourful and fun characteristics of this amazing street. Of course, we sampled the world famous bagels at Bagel Bake – very yummy and excellent good value!
