Year 9 solve a ‘murder’ during their CSI workshop

October 6, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

Year 9 solved a ‘murder’ using DNA fingerprinting and blood analysis during their CSI workshop.

On Friday 7th October we became forensic scientists for the day as part of our CSI workshop. We were given investigative jobs such as being a lead forensic scientist or a lead detective. We worked in teams to solve a fake murder using blood analysis and DNA fingerprinting. We had to work to a time limit so it became very pressurised but great fun.

Year 8 have fun racing wriggling maggots

October 6, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

As part of Biology week, year 8 race their maggots to see who has the fastest!

On Thursday 6th October we raced maggots! The maggots were coloured red, green and yellow. We picked our own maggots and timed how long it took them to wriggle to the end of a race course! Some maggots were very slow and some did not want to move at all! It was great fun and an unusual way of thinking about insects and their life cycles as part of biodiversity and Biology Week.

Science staff get silly for Biology Week

October 5, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

Science staff dress up to tell Year 11 about Jenner, vaccines and the immune system.

Science Staff at Bishop’s dressed up to tell Year 11 students about vaccinations and the role of the immune system in combating diseases like small pox and the bubonic plague. Activities included seeing how the plague doctor worked during the 18th century, making antibody molecules using pipe cleaners and showing how Jenner used vaccinations to help prevent smallpox. This all linked with the GCSE Biology/Combined Science specification and was great fun for the students to see and participate in, as part of Biology Week 2022.

Biology Week begins with Crafty Creatures!

October 4, 2022/in General News/by BHGS

Biology Week 2022 has a crafty start with Year 7 creating origami animals to celebrate the Earth’s biodiversity.

Biology Week 2022 has a crafty start with year 7 decorating bookmarks and garden sticks with an animal theme to celebrate and appreciate Earth’s biodiversity. Students enjoyed painting bug themed garden sticks ready to use at home and for Bishop’s green club. Students designed scratch art magnets and bookmarks for display in their classes and some students challenged themselves with origami, designing origami bats, fish and foxes! The origami bats are a great, seasonal activity for everyone to try: https://origami.me/bat/. These activities help students appreciate the diversity of life and how close to extinction many of these creatures are, including bats; https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/endangered-bats-killed-in-mauritius.
