Y13 Geography Urban Models
Are urban models valid today?
Year 13 geographers have been researching the urban morphology of two contrasting world cities to investigate whether the established geographical urban models are still valid and helpful in understanding urban growth in the 21st century. The two world cities were: Los Angeles, a High Income Country world city and Lagos, a Newly Emerging Economy world city. The conclusions were that there are still distinct concentric circles of different land use around the Central Business District in both cities. However, HIC cities such as LA have developed small satellite centres on the edge of the city with business opportunities and retail space; whereas NEE cities such as Lagos, have distinct linear development along route ways (eg railways and main roads). Overall, the urban models are still relevant to geographers and urban planners today!
