Chemistry wit and wisdom with Professor Poliakoff
Professor Poliakoff, Chemistry Professor at Nottingham University, spoke to Year 9 and 12 scientists about his career path and chemistry YouTube videos
As part of British Science Week at Bishop’s, Professor Poliakoff spoke to all year 9 scientists about his career in chemistry.
Ashley VZ said: “Prof Poliakoff spoke about his father who influenced his career choice and how he was a natural when it came to hypothesising – having created his first hypothesis when he was 6 years old! He told us that, as a child, he had a lab in his parents’ basement which he accidentally filled with chemical fumes once, when an experiment went wrong! Overall he was extremely knowledgeable, funny and a joy to listen to.”
Year 12 scientists also enjoyed a workshop in the afternoon where they used glowsticks to look at rates of reaction and also enjoyed a question and answer session with the professor, about chemistry related careers. It was wonderful for all students and the science staff to meet Prof Poliakoff and for him to give up his time to visit and inspire Bishop’s students. Thank you to our science technician, Mrs Adams, for organising this amazing visit.
Professor Poliakoff has released lots of YouTube videos on chemistry. Check this one out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcgpUkcYXfc
