Mics and Masterpieces
Students embrace responsible risk-taking in a lunchtime of creative activities
On the lunchtime of Thursday 6th February, as part of Children’s Mental Health Week, we held a new addition to the Bishop’s Calendar: Mics and Masterpieces. The idea behind this event was to support our students in allowing them to develop their confidence by taking responsible risks in a safe and supportive environment. With a creative slant, the activities on offer in the Drama Studio, were to take a turn performing as part of our open-mic-type set-up; or to get stuck in with some pastels, creating an artistic piece in response to some Kandinsky works which were pinned up around the room; or to decoratively ice a biscuit which they could then eat! Interestingly, Kandinsky actually experienced the neurological phenomenon ‘synesthesia’, meaning that he perceived sounds to have colours and vice versa, something which heavily influenced his art works. This made a good link between the music and art that were going on throughout the event.
We were inundated with students who came to get stuck in and give things a go in the informal atmosphere, and it was fantastic to see students getting involved and trying out activities, not worrying about the outcomes and just giving them a go. They loved seeing their peers perform and supported them with real enthusiasm! It was also wonderful to see students performing the music that they had chosen and loved, to their friends and peers, with a sense of fun and pride. Additionally, it was great to see students who might not necessarily always put themselves forward for things, get involved and do themselves proud. So many students wanted to perform that we’re in the process of planning another similar event to give more students a chance to get involved and share their talents with the school community.
