Year 10 Teach French & German in Primary Schools

February 12, 2025/in General News/by BHGS

72 Year 10 MFL Leaders deliver French and German activity workshops to local primary schools pupils over 2 days

Young Modern Foreign Language Leaders Programme – Second placement

On Wednesday and Thursday 12th and 13th February, 72 of our Year 10 MFL Leaders in four teams visited Oak View School, and St Philip Howard Schools, giving French and German activity workshops to KS2 pupils across the two days.

Young Leader initiatives have made a great impact on the teaching of young people over the last 20 years across many curriculum areas, using a sports team model. The BHGS Modern Foreign Language Leader Programme hopes to engage a whole new group of young leaders through MFL.

The Young Leaders planned, delivered and evaluated their learning activities for the Key Stage 2 pupils, with an eye to developing and demonstrating leadership skills through foreign language related tasks. The programme will culminate this year with a Languages Discovery Day for the Key Stage 2 pupils hosted by our school in June in which the Year 10 pupils will play a leading role delivering a wide range of foreign languages and cultural experiences. There will be certificates and awards for Team Leadership and Initiative, which will be presented in July 2025.

Our students were, as ever, enthusiastic and brilliantly delivered their lessons to the younger pupils – they were also able to find out what life is like on the ‘other side’ of the whiteboard! They now look forward to the big finale in the Summer Term!

A big thank you to all involved, here at Bishop’s and at our local primary schools to make this opportunity possible.

Safer Internet Week: Minecraft Build Challenge!

February 11, 2025/in General News/by BHGS

For Safer Internet Week, students built creative Minecraft houses while reflecting on technology use.

As part of Safer Internet Week, students put their creativity to the test in a lunchtime Minecraft challenge, building the most impressive house! Students built amazing Minecraft houses, including towering skyscrapers, temple-like designs, and even a bright pink masterpiece.

This fun activity encouraged students to think about how they use technology while collaborating and showcasing their digital design skills. Well done to everyone who took part—your builds were amazing!

Year 10 Spotlight on Knife Crime

February 11, 2025/in General News/by BHGS

Year 10 raising awareness of knife crime

This last term, Year 10 Life Skills students have been learning about the serious issues of County Lines and Knife Crime in Hertfordshire, London and beyond. They have taken part in activities looking at why young people may be drawn into gangs and carrying knives and watched a documentary recently produced by Idris Elba about the epidemic of knife violence in the UK and his campaign against selling all forms knives not used for cooking.

To end this topic, students were given the choice of writing a letter to their local MP highlighting the issues, or creating an anti knife crime poster and I have been thoroughly impressed with some of their work, as well as the mature attitude they have shown throughout the term when talking about such sensitive and emotive issues.

Year 8 Campaign on Local Issues in Life Skills

February 11, 2025/in General News/by BHGS

Year 8 Life Skills Student Campaigns

This term, the Year 8 pupils have been working on Campaigning in their Life Skills lessons. They have been taught about campaigning, protesting and been involved in debates about campaigning methods, from The Suffragettes to Just Stop Oil.

In recent weeks, they have worked in groups to identify and research local issues that are important to them and this week, they have been presenting their work using local statistics, data analysis, surveys etc. I have been very impressed with the wide range of issues that they have worked on from animal cruelty, knife crime and pollution to local shops selling vapes to children. Classmates are rating each group on their presentation skills, research and passion and winners announced after half term will receive lots of house points, as well as the opportunity to take their campaign to local councillors and community leaders.

A Bustling Art Department

February 11, 2025/in General News/by BHGS

Making and exploring art in and outside school to fuel creativity and promote well-being

The Art department has been bustling with activity this half term. From welcoming grand parents in our art classes, the Year 11 visit to the Chapman Gallery, a fun Mics and Masterpieces lunchtime for Children Mental Health Week to our long standing displays of the Work of the Week, our pupils have been making and exploring Art in all its forms.

Grandparents in Art Classes This half term, we were excited to welcome some of our students’ grandparents to help out in our Year 8 textiles classes. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect and share knowledge.

In the upcoming half term, we would love to invite other grandparents and carers in to assist in our Year 7 textiles classes, where students will be learning sewing, appliqué, and tie-dye techniques. Why Get Involved? – Build Connections: Share your skills and bond with students. – Foster Creativity: Help students explore their artistic talents. – Flexible Commitment: Come for one class or more starting from 3rd March 2025. No prior experience is required – just your enthusiasm to guide and support the students. If you’re interested, please contact your (grand)child’s teacher to sign up as booking ahead is essential.

Year 11 Art, Craft, and Design Trip Year 11 Art, Craft, and Design students recently visited the Chapman Gallery at Hertfordshire University to gather inspiration for their exam projects. The visit offered a chance to engage with various artists’ works, exploring connections to their theme of “gathering.”

Sketching from primary sources sharpens observational accuracy, fuels creativity, and deepens the understanding of an artist’s intent. Our students’ sketches were full of energy and creativity. Their behavior was also exemplary, leaving a positive impression on both themselves and the school.

Mics and Masterpieces On the 6th of February, pupils attended a “Mics and Masterpieces” lunchtime event as part of Children’s Mental Health Week. Here, they were offered a chance to perform informally a tune of their choice in an open-mic forum with an eager audience. They could also decorate cookies or jump on an easel to unleash creativity in a free art space. It was a fun and creative way to promote well-being through the arts in an informal environment. The singers, in particular, were exceptional.

Work of the Week In our Art department, teachers select one or more pieces of artwork to celebrate as the “Work of the Week.” These pieces are typically chosen for the exceptional achievement displayed that week, acknowledging the hard work and talent of the creators. This term, Year 11 and Year 7 students have truly shone, and their efforts have been recognized!

Y13 Tudor Thames Tour

February 7, 2025/in General News/by BHGS

The Golden Hinde and Westminster Abbey Sixth Form trip

A sunny day along the River Thames was enjoyed by the Year 12 Historians as they visited the Golden Hinde galleon and Westminster Abbey in central London. The two famous historic sites were visited to support our History A Level curriculum. The interactive galleon visit learnt about life on a sixteenth century ship and most particularly that of privateers. Sir Francis Drake’s circumnavigation of the globe under Elizabeth I showed Tudor Foreign policy for colonisation and exploration that started in the Elizabethan era. Our tour then took us along the River Thames, viewing the Tudor theatre The Globe and sites of St Paul’s Cathedral from the Millenium Bridge. Our afternoon focused on the Reformation and how Westminster Abbey, a site of coronations since 1100s, lost its status as a monastery under Henry’s VIII’s dissolution programme. The whole span of Tudor monarchs were showcased in our tour along the Thames.

Hertfordshire’s Employment Showcased

Generation Welwyn Hatfield Careers Conference – An annual event for our Year 11s

Crossroads and decisions are hard for all of us. For our Year 11s embarking on the next stage of their journey, help was at hand with the annual Generation Welwyn Hatfield Careers Conference at the Hatfield Fielder Centre. This event showcases a wealth of businesses and post-16 options for our young people in Hertfordshire. A keen group of Year 11s and some Year 12s attended last Friday for a busy morning of networking! Businesses such as Barclays, Roche, Morgan Sindall, Sky Studios and even our local Baker Simmons had stalls explaining the range of opportunities for employment available in our county. Our pupils were commented on being engaged and motivated -many asking for placements in local businesses as part of our Work Experience programme! Jobs ranged from sports scientists to emergency services – with all aspects of the roles explained by those currently employed in all the local sectors. A few of our pupils even got a great feel for the jobs – some practically so – like the fire service!

Emphatic win for Bishop’s Footballers

February 7, 2025/in General News/by BHGS

Bishop’s Under 13 football team wins U13 English Schools FA cup Round 3 (11:1) in adverse weather

On a bitter February day, with sleet, hail and a biting cross wind, the U13 English Schools FA cup away fixture against Aldenham School, seemed an incredibly challenging prospect. Of course, our pupils demonstrated the full Bishop 360 culture and rose to the occasion; demonstrating character, skill and a clear understanding of their strengths. An emphatic win, with the final score 11 (eleven):1 to Bishop’s, sees the U13 team reach the 4th Round of the cup. In fact, the victory was so comprehensive that the second half was shortened by 10 minutes!

The goals were distributed as follows: Evie 5, Reecie 2, Jahziah 2, Jasmine 1 and Alice 1.

Congratulations to all the players, they were amazing!

Mics and Masterpieces

February 6, 2025/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Students embrace responsible risk-taking in a lunchtime of creative activities

On the lunchtime of Thursday 6th February, as part of Children’s Mental Health Week, we held a new addition to the Bishop’s Calendar: Mics and Masterpieces. The idea behind this event was to support our students in allowing them to develop their confidence by taking responsible risks in a safe and supportive environment. With a creative slant, the activities on offer in the Drama Studio, were to take a turn performing as part of our open-mic-type set-up; or to get stuck in with some pastels, creating an artistic piece in response to some Kandinsky works which were pinned up around the room; or to decoratively ice a biscuit which they could then eat! Interestingly, Kandinsky actually experienced the neurological phenomenon ‘synesthesia’, meaning that he perceived sounds to have colours and vice versa, something which heavily influenced his art works. This made a good link between the music and art that were going on throughout the event.

We were inundated with students who came to get stuck in and give things a go in the informal atmosphere, and it was fantastic to see students getting involved and trying out activities, not worrying about the outcomes and just giving them a go. They loved seeing their peers perform and supported them with real enthusiasm! It was also wonderful to see students performing the music that they had chosen and loved, to their friends and peers, with a sense of fun and pride. Additionally, it was great to see students who might not necessarily always put themselves forward for things, get involved and do themselves proud. So many students wanted to perform that we’re in the process of planning another similar event to give more students a chance to get involved and share their talents with the school community.

Growing Together: A Look Back at Children’s Mental Health Week 2025

February 4, 2025/in General News/by BHGS

Children’s Mental Health Week 2025 was a vibrant celebration of self awareness, gratitude, and wellbeing, with uplifting activities like the Growing with Gratitude Board, inspiring challenges, and creative lunchtime events, leaving a lasting impact on our school community.

What a week it’s been! Children’s Mental Health Week 2025 brought an explosion of colour, positivity, and connection to our school. With the theme “Know Yourself, Grow Yourself,” we focused on self-awareness, gratitude, and personal growth – and wow, did our school community step up!

The Growth Through Gratitude board became the centrepiece of the school. Students brought it to life with beautifully decorated flower templates and vibrant, heartfelt messages of thanks, encouragement, and self reflection. The board became a go-to space, where students and staff paused to read, reflect and contribute their own heartfelt words of gratitude – each note a little spark of positivity, creating a ripple effect of kindness. By the end of the week, the Gratitude Growth board was overflowing, proving just how much this simple act of appreciation resonated with us all and brought our community together.

The energy didn’t stop there! Students eagerly took on the Inspirational Quote Quest, racing to find hidden messages of motivation around the school. The BINGO Challenge saw forms working together, completing wellbeing tasks, and celebrating small wins – because looking after our mental health should always be something to celebrate!

Form time became a space for real talk about self-awareness and mental wellbeing, with students exploring ways to grow, reflect, and support one another. The discussions were thoughtful, uplifting, and a reminder that we are all in this together.

Lunchtimes were a highlight, with an incredible turnout for our wellbeing activities. We started the week with Mindful Movement, bringing calm and focus into the school through stretching and dance. Then, students got creative with Chalk Drawing, filling the pavement with inspiring messages, while others found peace in Meditation & Mindfulness. Midweek, we embraced growth – literally! – with Plant a Bean (Green Warriors Club), where students nurtured new life, symbolising personal growth. The creativity continued with Mics and Masterpieces, as students showcased their talents in music and art. Finally, we ended on a high with the joy and energy of Bollywood Dancing, bringing students together in a celebration of movement and culture.

These moments of creativity, movement, and reflection added an extra layer of joy to an already impactful week, giving students and staff a chance to connect and recharge.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part – you made this week a celebration of mental health and wellbeing. From the colourful notes of gratitude to the competitive (but friendly!) spirit of the challenges, Let’s keep the momentum going!
