Year 11 Prom 2024

June 28, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

Year 11 celebrate the end of their exams at their Prom

Year 11 celebrated the end of their exams and the start of the next chapter in their Bishop’s seven-year-journey with an evening of fun and glamour at Mill Green Golf Club on 28th June 2024.

Planning for the event had started months before when all year 11 pupils in each form were invited to apply for the position of event organisers at the start of the academic year. The successful applicants and their Head of Year, Miss Graves, formed the Prom Committee. They worked together as a team throughout the year to plan an event that would be enjoyable for all.

By the start of summer, they had booked the venue, chosen the colour scheme and sought decorations to match it, ordered the food, booked a photographer and had a clear outline of what this popular celebration should entail.

On the day of the Prom, Miss Graves along with some of the committee and a parent, decorated the venue to turn it into the magical space that it became on the night. Pupils enjoyed a delicious finger buffet and a DJ kept them dancing throughout the evening. A professional photographer captured the evening with some beautiful photos that the Year 11 students can keep to remember the evening by.

We wish our Year 11 a fantastic summer of fun and recovery, and look forward to seeing them again in September.

Saying Goodbye to Year 13s at the Leaver’s Ball

June 27, 2024/in Alumni, General News/by BHGS

On the 27th June, Year 13 enjoyed their Leavers’ Ball at Mill Green Golf Club thanks to Mrs James, Mrs Healy and the Prom Committee.

And what a great evening, it was! From 7pm, the music was blaring and everyone hit the dance floor! After jumping in the photo booth with friends, we all came together to unwind and celebrate the start of our post-exam summer. Heels were thrown to the side and the sweet bar was swiftly emptied as Year 13s danced the night away.

After an hour or so of picture taking and singing, it was time for everyone to refuel at the buffet in preparation for many more hours of dancing, singing, and trying to convince Mr Kench to join us on the dance floor. Whilst we were eating, DJ Andy was kind enough to announce a series of awards, such as Kindest Person, Most likely to Become famous, and Funniest person.

Mrs Ruffhead and Mrs James joined in the dancing, enjoying some ABBA with all the girls, but DJ Andy came out and danced the Candy with us all, showing us how it’s done!

The Leavers’ Ball was a great end to our time at Bishop’s, leaving us all with amazing memories and stunning pictures taken in the scenic landscape of the golf course.

Year 12 A-Level Law students enjoyed a day trip to London to visit Clifford Chance and met partners and in-house lawyers from Deutsche Bank, one of Clifford Chance’s clients.

Year 12 A-Level Law students enjoyed a day trip to London to visit Clifford Chance and met partners and in-house lawyers from Deutsche Bank, one of Clifford Chance’s clients.

On Wednesday 26th June, 25 A Level Law students travelled to London to the offices of international law firm, Clifford Chance. The morning started with a tour of the impressive building, featuring a hairdressers, gym, and swimming pool overlooking Canary Wharf.

The students then participated in a careers carousel where they had the chance to interview a range of lawyers from Clifford Chance, from trainee solicitors to partners, about their current roles and how they got there. They also had the chance to meet in-house lawyers from Deutsche Bank. This was an opportunity to ask questions about a legal career and appreciate the many different options for study prior to becoming a lawyer, including not only a law degree but degrees in subjects as diverse as history and engineering.

The trip concluded with a talk by the head of Graduate Recruitment and a discussion of the skills and characteristics that employers are looking for. This included resilience, enthusiasm, attention to detail and the importance of researching the employer before drafting your application to them.

The students then enjoyed a light lunch in the Clifford Chance offices whilst speaking to a former student of BHGS, who is now a trainee solicitor for Clifford Chance.

Year 9 Scientists Mask Up for Microbiology!

June 25, 2024/in Careers, General News/by BHGS

Year 9 scientists visit Kedrion Biopharma to learn about different aseptic techniques for drug preparation.

On June the 25th, I had the privilege to visit Kedrion Biopharma with some of my classmates. It was a wonderful experience, especially for someone like  me who’s looking to have a career in science.

We learned about what Kedrion Bipharma does, which is coming up with very important medicines using blood plasma, and how they do this. I was blown away by the complicated methods of storing plasma and the processes involved in making medicines using plasma. We then learnt about clean rooms. We had fun washing our hands with a special gel and having a look at our hands under the UV light to see how many microbes were still present even though we had washed them. It was an interesting experience!

Our second activity, involved testing the room for different bacteria to show how difficult it is to get aseptic conditions as needed for their work. We rubbed the surface we wanted to test with a very professional equipment that has a cotton swab on the end to capture any microbes. The organisms will grow on the agar plate and we would be able to see them as colonies a few days after they have been incubated. It was super fun and I really look forward to receiving an update on what microbes might have grown on my plate!

The last activity was the most interesting activity to me. We actually got the chance to wear the protective suit of a grade D clean room and work like an actual employee – where we got a chance to work with a glove box, trying to rearrange different pieces of apparatus whilst wearing very thick gloves for maximum sterility! It was really inspiring and knowing people have to work in these suits for hours and hours just to make sure patients have clean and effective medicine really made me appreciate all the medicines and vaccinations that have saved many people from their struggles.

Our visit to Kedrion was great fun and very interesting and thank you to all the staff that made this possible.

BHGS Engineers of the Future

June 24, 2024/in Careers, General News, Home Page/by BHGS

BHGS Year 9s excelled by completing their Bronze Industrial Cadets Programme over a twelve week period.

BHGS Engineers of the Future

On Monday 24th June, Bishop’s 2 teams, the Innovators and Medtech, delivered their projects at a celebration and Awards event hosted by the Engineering Development Trust at Watford Boys’ Grammar School. We set up our stands showing our projects, with our models, portfolios and research we had done over the past 12 weeks.

Through the Industrial Cadets scheme, we were able to learn many skills such as public speaking amongst others. This allowed us to confidently express our ideas and opinions and back it up with the weeks of research we had done. All valuable skills for our futures!

Both teams found that going to the celebration event was a really motivating and interesting experience. As participants, mentors, and business partners gathered to honour the Industrial Cadets achievements and hard work, the venue was humming with enthusiasm. The host of the event greeted everyone warmly and talked about the importance of supporting future talent, as well as the impact of the Industrial Cadets programmes on engineering and inspiring interest in STEM in the participants.

Throughout the day, we were introduced to some of the 2024 sponsors of Industrial Cadets. They gave a variety of talks and helped us to work out whether we wanted to pursue a career in STEM and how to achieve our goals. More importantly, the message that came across was that it was alright to fail at something- all you do is dust yourself off and move on.

We mingled around the venue, taking it in turn to see other schools’ presentations whilst presenting our own ideas. We swapped after about twenty minutes so we could each have an equal time explaining our project too.

As it was a very hot day, we enjoyed lunch on the balcony watching a cricket match between the MCC and Watford Boys’. Very relaxing and civilised. Dr Lota and Mr Short enjoyed this too, especially explaining the weird nuances of cricket!

Furthermore, the event provided many possibilities for networking, enabling participants to connect with industry leaders, employers, and peers. These discussions encouraged participants to feel friendly with one another and to share knowledge. Our group loved the chance to talk with others who share our enthusiasm for engineering and creativity. The best aspect was the project exhibitions. Observing the diverse variety of projects that people around us had completed gave us a comprehensive awareness of emerging trends and existing industry practices. Our understanding of the real-world uses of theoretical knowledge has been improved. Through conversations, we were able to enhance our communication and presentation skills during the event. By explaining our projects to visitors and answering their questions, we improved our ability to convey sophisticated technical knowledge in an understandable way.

Finally, we sat down as a school, ready to hear the results. Three awards were on offer and both of our teams came runners up. One of us even won the Best Project of the Year. The Innovators were runners-up for the Innovative Project Award and Medtech was runner-up for Best Teamwork Award. Medtech, to our delight and excitement, won the Best Project of the Year Award in London and South East out of forty-nine participants! The citation of this award read as:

“This was an outstanding report and presentation. The team conducted comprehensive research, which gave them a great platform from which to develop their project. The presentation was delivered confidently and professionally, clearly demonstrating the great team dynamics that existed within the team. All team members showed an exceptional passion for the project and the assessors commented that the success of the team was a result of how well they worked together. All assessors were unanimous in nominating this team for the project of the year award.”

Our two Bishops teams did extremely well and were both very proud of what we all had achieved throughout our twelve week program. We came away inspired and enriched. We gained critical communication skills, and we learned valuable details about standards in the industry. The support and encouragement we have received, together with the sense of community, have increased our desire to create and succeed. We are ecstatic to have had this opportunity to contribute to the future of engineering. We wear our Bronze Industrial Cadets badged with pride.

We all would like to thank Dr Lota and Mr Short for their time, advice and encouragement. We would also like to thank Barhale Construction for their sponsorship, mentoring and for keeping us motivated.

Year 7 and 8 District Rounders Tournament 2024

June 24, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

More success for Bishop’s in Years 7 and 8

On Monday 24th June, Miss Rollings and Miss Nelson took the Year 7 and 8 Rounders teams to Monks Walk School to represent BHGS at the District Rounders tournament.

Both teams had won all of their District games so far throughout the season and were looking to continue their run of good form going into the District competition.

The Year 7s won 2 of their 3 games versus Onslow and Monks Walk School and moved into their final game in a winner takes all scenario vs Yavneh. Sadly, the Year 7 team just lost out by 1 Rounder to finish as runners up. Year 7 Rounders team – Pippa K, Maisie C, Katie C, Yana N, Charlotte C, Sonam S, Holly M, Lily O’N, Elizabeth R, Grace C, Kaityln F, Aadhya P, Kristin H and Lucy C (travelling coach/injured player).

The Year 8s won all of their pool games and progressed into the semi final vs Monks Walk where they won by 3 Rounders. Chancellors were the winner of the other semi final and a close final game saw our Year 8s on the right side of the result to win by 1 Rounder and emerge as District Champions. Year 8 Rounders team – Isla P, Emily N, Lauren C, Alexia L, Ruby E-D, Olivia C, Isabella R, Anna McG-H, Lucyanne W, Ellie G, Lola C and Iona C.

A brilliant effort from both teams after an excellent season. Well done everyone!

Thank you to Miss Rollings and Miss Nelson for organising and running the fixtures for the Year 7 and 8 teams this year and thank you to Miss Cameron for organising and hosting the Year 7 and 8 tournament.

Inspirational Eco Teen

June 20, 2024/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Alice is awarded ‘Inspirational Eco Teen’ 2024

Nomination for Alice Pinto for Inspirational Eco Teen for the ‘Little Green Change’ magazine:

Alice is a valued member of the Green Club since she joined Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School 2 years ago. Alice has attended every weekly meeting, no matter what the weather, rain, snow or sunshine. She loves to care for the environment and look after the school garden area. We can always depend on Alice turning up and getting stuck in and have a go with no fuss whatsoever, whether the job be clearing the nature pond (a rather smelly and cold job, I must say); planting spring flowering bulbs for the first insects of the year, in the pouring rain; or working inside making bird feeders or nest boxes, we can always count on Alice being there and giving 100%. She loves sowing vegetable seeds, caring for the seedlings and planting them out to grow beautiful courgettes, peppers and tomatoes, as she is strongly aware of the need for food security and sourcing food locally to reduce the carbon footprint and take a small action to reduce the impact of climate change.

Over the past 2 years in the Green Club Alice has taken part in many of our projects including the upkeep of our gardens, always keeping in mind the benefits for our local wildlife, as well as looking good for our community, building and looking after hedgehog houses, bird feeders, bird nest boxes and our very popular bug hotel (Bishop’s Bugs). She is also passionate about the upkeep and improvement of our nature garden (some may say bramble patch), but Alice can see the larger picture of the enormous benefits this little area has, not only to our school, but also to Hatfield in general.

Alice recently took a lead role in a joint international project with partner schools in Poland and Northern Ireland, highlighting the need to reduce food waste and how to reuse leftover food. She came up with the snappy headline ‘Bringing Leftovers to Life’. Her passion for conserving resources and protecting and conserving the environment was infectious and she led a group of her peers in pitching the group’s ideas on producing an educational e-book. This is a lovely example of Alice taking a small action to combat climate change and persuading her peers to do the same!

Alice also has an appreciation of the larger national and global scale and the importance of caring for the environment and considering how she and her peers can make a difference to combat climate change. She attended a KS3 Climate Change Summit at the University of Herts on 11/6/24 and contributed some excellent ideas on developing public transport so that our country reduces its dependence on fossil fuels and work towards the move to renewable energy alternatives.

Year 7s go to Bhaktivedanta Manor!

June 13, 2024/in General News/by BHGS

Year 7 Students visit Bhaktivedanta Manor to explore Hinduism.

On the 12th June, 74 enthusiastic Year 7 students embarked on an educational journey to Bhaktivedanta Manor, a significant spiritual hub for the Hindu community. This visit was designed to deepen their understanding of Hinduism, aligning perfectly with their religious education curriculum.

Upon arrival, the students were warmly welcomed and given an opportunity to experience a range of activities that highlighted various aspects of Hindu culture and beliefs. The day began with an exciting ride on bullock carts, offering a unique glimpse into traditional transportation methods used in rural India.

The students then had the pleasure of feeding the cows, an activity that was both enjoyable and educational. This hands-on experience was instrumental in teaching them about the revered status of cows in Hinduism. These animals are considered sacred and are a symbol of non-violence (ahimsa), providing nourishment and support to human life.

Following this, the students attended an enlightening talk on the fundamental beliefs of Hinduism. They learned about the concept of the soul (Atman) and the cycle of reincarnation (Samsara), gaining insight into how these beliefs shape the lives and practices of Hindus around the world.

Midway through the day, the students enjoyed a delicious and authentic vegetarian meal, adding another dimension to their cultural experience. They savoured paneer curry, a flavourful dish made from Indian cottage cheese, paired with aromatic rice and puri, a type of deep-fried bread. This meal not only delighted their taste buds but also introduced them to the vegetarian dietary customs often observed in Hinduism, emphasising the principles of non-violence (ahimsa) and respect for all living beings.

This visit to Bhaktivedanta Manor was not just an educational trip, but a profound cultural immersion. It allowed the students to witness and understand the rich traditions and spiritual depth of Hinduism, fostering respect and appreciation for this ancient religion.

The experience left a lasting impact on the students, enriching their knowledge and broadening their perspectives. It was a day filled with learning, curiosity, and reflection, perfectly complementing their studies and bringing the curriculum to life in a meaningful way.

We are grateful to Bhaktivedanta Manor for their hospitality and for providing such an enriching experience for our students. This visit will surely be remembered as a highlight of their educational journey.
