Practice makes perfect – Mock Interviews for Sixth Formers

March 9, 2023/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Local businesses joined our Sixth Form for a series of mock interviews to build their confidence and develop communication skills

As part of our Sixth Form Careers Programme, a number of key employers came into school to “speed-interview” our Year 12s. Pupils prepared their CVs and researched some of the businesses attending and had at least two interviews, each with different employers. The employers who kindly gave up their time were: Roche, Tesco, Computacenter, Morgan Sindall, Crane and Staples Solicitors and some of our governors attended as well. Year 12 were therefore put through their paces by a range of different organisation.

“Confidence has a lot to do with interviews – that and timing!” so said Michael Parkinson – for those of us who can remember him – and we had plenty of confidence according to our visiting interviewers. The interviewers were looking for a warm introduction, strong and positive body language and a confident closure. The content of the interview was general – but the pupils were showcasing their skills from their studies, part-time work and their extra-curriculum activities.

Overall the morning was a success with half of the Year 12s being interviewed and finding it a valuable experience. The feedback from the businesses involved was all positive – confidence, good explanation of skills and polite attitudes. Each pupil got the chance for direct and instant feedback which they could use to improve on their second interviews. Any collective improvement ideas will be collated and fed back into our Careers Programme for a session later this term.

The Mock Interviews will carry on next week as more of our local business community gets the chance to meet our bright and engaged Year 12s for a second round!

Rivercraft Minecraft Educational Game Trial

March 8, 2023/in General News/by BHGS

New environmental themed games on the Minecraft Education platform

On 8th March 2023, Year 9 Geography students took part in a user testing trial of some exciting new educational Minecraft / Rivercraft games before they are officially launched later in the year. The Environment Agency has developed three new environmental themed games on the Minecraft Education platform. These games help young people understand more about flood risk and climate change and how to adapt to these challenges.

The students were able to give valuable feedback on the games, the content and the player experience which will influence the final published games. This was also a fantastic opportunity to introduce different career paths, both in the environmental sector and the gaming industry.

Our students said: ‘The games were really fun and I learnt a lot.’ ‘This is a great way to learn about flooding and climate change.’ ‘The games are creative and bring the topic alive’. ‘The games are brilliant; I loved the competitive element and wanted to find out more.’

Thank you to Megan, Josh, Becky and Leanne @EnvAgency for delivering the workshops.

Cracking Codes at Bletchley Park

March 8, 2023/in General News/by BHGS

Year 9 Students spent a (snowy) day at Bletchley Park, Cracking Codes

On Wednesday 8th March, Year 9 visited Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire to discover more about code breaking. They began the day with an interactive workshop, learning, using and developing practical problem-solving and team working skills as they began to understand the scale of the task faced by Bletchley Park’s codebreakers during World War Two.

They also enjoyed the rare opportunity to use a genuine Enigma machine as well as encountering a range of historical codes and ciphers as they worked together to decipher messages in order to solve a puzzle.

After the workshop they had a chance to see the many exhibits and walk the Mansion, Museum and Huts where the codebreaking happened.

After lunch they delved deeper into the story of Bletchley Park and were given a guided tour around the outside of the buildings. They were told about the process of sending, intercepting and decrypting coded messages and what everyday life was like for those who did the codebreaking.

It was a great day, with many improving their existing skills in mathematical thinking, applying them to a practical codebreaking task and discovering lots of useful, new knowledge linked to our GCSE Computer Science specification

Big Names in Science at GCSE Science Live

March 3, 2023/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Year 10 enjoy listening to Prof. Jim Al-Khalili, Maggie Aderin-Pocock MBE and other eminent scientists at GCSE Science Live

On Friday 3rd March, we went to the Dominion Theatre in London to attend GCSE Science Live. The immersive experience was an opportunity for GCSE pupils to engage with Britain’s leading scientists, science examiners and discover more about the successful careers available for those with a Science GCSE and beyond.

We listened to renowned scientists, academics and famous science programme presenters talk about their work and were given plenty of exam and revision tips. Prof Jim Al-Khalili, who presents a lot of science on TV, talked about whether we could travel into the past and/or the future. He did not say it could never happen, we would just have to travel close to the speed of light! Maggie Aldrin-Pocock MBE, a space scientist, chatted about the stars, planets and just how vast the universe is. Alice Roberts, a biological anthropologist, biologist, television presenter and author, showed how she can date skeletal remains, however old they are and Steve Jones, a geneticist, discussed nature versus nurture and how obesity and other conditions can be due to both genetics and environment. It was a really informative day with lots of inspirational science discussions.

Generation Welwyn & Hatfield – First local Careers Conference for 16+ Options

March 2, 2023/in General News, Home Page/by BHGS

Bishop’s Hatfield Year 11 open and attend a careers conference showcasing the breadth of Hertfordshire’s local business and careers opportunities

The Welwyn and Hatfield area were treated to our first post-16 Careers Conference with the Generation Welwyn and Hatfield Conference, opened by our local MP for Welwyn Hatfield, the Rt. Hon Grant Shapps, MP on Friday 24th February at the Fielder Centre in Hatfield. BHGS pupils were chosen to help open proceedings as seen in the Welwyn and Hatfield Times! (Hatfield: Students network at careers fair opened by Grant Shapps | Welwyn Hatfield Times (whtimes.co.uk)

The conference was run by the Local Hertfordshire Enterprise Partnership (LEP) with leads on career path options, apprenticeships and career skills development support for local schools and opened to 1000 students from Welwyn Hatfield. A group of our Year 11s were invited to the conference which showcased numerous local and regional businesses and opportunities for the future. It was in the format of a Careers Fair and allowed our pupils to discuss options and network opportunities direct. Business attendees ranged from public services such as the Police to corporates such as Barclays and PayPoint to small businesses such as the solicitors Cranes & Staples and apprenticeship providers through to colleges such as Oaklands College and Beauty and Sports specialists.

Our Year 11s joined all the local schools in the area who went to find out what Hertfordshire has to offer. Year 11 behaved brilliantly engaging with all the employers and colleges by asking thoughtful and useful questions and returning with a wealth of information and the usual conference goodie bag!

Carol Jager of PayPoint said of our pupils “Bishop’s students were focused and interested” and Oaklands College represented by Sarah Wigmore commented “All Bishop’s attendees showed maturity and focus when talking to our team”.

The Year 11s had an enjoyable and insightful morning and it showed them the big world of opportunities waiting for them after June this year.

Apprenticeships for All

March 2, 2023/in General News/by BHGS

Explaining Apprenticeship options to our Sixth Form

As part of our broad Careers Programme for Sixth Form on Friday a visitor from Ask Apprenticeships, a government sponsored organisation, came into Bishop’s to explain the Apprenticeship route to our Sixth Formers.

At Bishop’s, many of our pupils progress to university. However, increasingly, the option of Apprenticeships is being investigated and that route taken. It was explained by our presenter that there are many different Apprenticeship routes at 16+, 18+ and post degree. It is a “training on the job” option whereby pupils can apply directly to many organisations and businesses locally and nationally for a role with training and degree running alongside this.

The Apprenticeship route is being keenly promoted by the government, seen by more and more businesses offering all levels of apprenticeships. The benefit of an Apprenticeship is three-fold – paid job role and experience, degree training and sponsored and funded by the business. This makes it a cost effective option. Here at Bishops were are encouraging all our pupils to consider all their options and this is one that is growing in popularity.

For parents to understand more about these post-school options, click on the link to the Amazing Apprenticeship website: Amazing Apprenticeship Information

Additionally, as part of our Careers Programme in the coming weeks we have a Workshop running for our Year 12s ( and year 13s are also invited) to sign up to the government website to access all opportunities as they land. More on this later.

Welwyn Hatfield Youth Awards 2023

March 2, 2023/in General News/by BHGS

Youth Environmentalist of the Year Runner-Up

The Welwyn Hatfield Youth Awards ceremony took place on Thursday 2nd March. The Youth Awards aim to recognise and celebrate the diverse achievements of the young people in our borough. The awards are open to young people aged 11-19 who live, work or are educated in the borough and have been outstanding in a particular discipline or gone above and beyond to help others.

Molly was one of three finalists shortlisted for the Young Environmentalist of the Year Award. As Runner-Up, Molly received a lovely framed certificate. Reasons for Molly’s nomination:

Molly always enthusiastically participates and contributes to club activities. Molly has attended the Save the World Eco Club and Green Club since September 2020, never missing a session. She takes initiative and contributes fantastic ideas. She is a significant member of the clubs helping organise and run the making of elderflower cordial which was shared at an after school event, as well as promoting healthy eating through the RHS Great Soup Share. She is a calm individual who loves to encourage others to participate and learn about the benefits of conservation and looking after the local environment. Molly took the lead in an energy saving campaign where students were asked to enter a competition to design a saving energy sticker to remind everyone to switch off lights. She organised students to attach the stickers in every classroom. This campaign has been very successful. This also led to Molly helping the club members achieve a green badge in the Blue Peter Climate Hero project. Molly is very passionate about recycling and upcycling, turning old pillowcases into dresses, crisp packets into sleeping bags for the homeless.

Molly is an excellent role model to other students through her positive attitude and enthusiastic participation. This has been demonstrated through her leading a small group of students in planting out, maintaining the bug hotels, making woven fences to ensure the nature garden was maintained. Molly is very skilled in using tools to make bird feeders, bug hotels, hedgehog houses and nest boxes and uses these skills to support others at the club. Molly is a fantastic ambassador for promoting the importance of caring for the environment and explaining to others why this is so important. As a result more students have started to attend the Club and have become committed members. Molly has two allotments that she helps tend with her mother, growing vegetables and fruit. She is very knowledgeable and loves to share her expertise with younger and older students. Molly volunteers each week at a local Hedgehog Rescue centre because of her love for caring for nature. She keeps us up to date each week on how the hedgehogs are progressing.

Congratulations, Molly!
