Teaching methods:
The Faculty has six specialist teachers based in four language rooms. Staff use a wide range of techniques, including whole class teaching, pair work, group activities and independent assignments. The initial focus is on the skills of listening and speaking with the correct pronunciation, while this is rapidly extended to include reading and writing skills including the correct use of grammar with an eye to developing the necessary skills required for the new GCSE examinations.

Text books are supplemented with audio, DVDs, ICT resources and worksheets. A selection of German, French and Spanish books are available from the library and access to computers provides authentic up-to-date material. The course books are Echo, Expo and Mira at Key Stage 3, with Studio, Stimmt and ¡Viva! in Key Stage 4. Each pupil is provided with her own copy. Class sets of additional material for GCSE are used as appropriate to extend or reinforce topic areas for Edexcel GCSE. Our core text books in the sixth form link to the AQA examination board. It is recommended that all students have their own copy of a bi-lingual schools’ dictionary for each language studied.

Teaching groups:
In Years 7, 8 and 9 nearly all pupils study two foreign languages (French, German, Spanish) with most pupils continuing with both languages throughout Key Stage 3. Year 7 and 8 are taught in five form groups of mixed ability, two lessons per language lasting 50 minutes each..
Year 9 classes are taught in groups according to their progress and achievements in the previous year. Progress is monitored continuously to ensure that pupils are in the appropriate group.

Years 10 and 11 are taught in GCSE groups and pupils may study one or two languages, French, German or Spanish, leading to Edexcel Linear examinations. Results are excellent. Students have three 50 minute lessons per week.
Year 12 and 13 students follow the AQA courses for AS or A level in German, French and Spanish within the Consortium of local schools. Sixth Form students volunteer as Subject Prefects and assist in class.

Homework is set at an appropriate level for each group, and may involve creative writing, listening, on-line tasks, reading comprehension, collaborative work, preparation in work books, dialogues, display work, learning for a test or even writing to a pen friend. Magazine subscriptions are arranged through the staff.

Year 9 pupils usually have the opportunity to take part in an educational visit to explore the rich variety of language and culture in France and Germany. There have been successful trips to Alsace in France, and the Black Forest in Germany. In the past Year 10 pupils have visited Barcelona in Spain and our partner school in Greißwald, Germany.

Sixth Formers are encouraged to take part in a study visit to Berlin and/or Paris. Many students use their initiative to arrange their own contacts or even work experience abroad. A visit to a German Christmas Market is arranged in December.

Language Enrichment Clubs:
The following after-school clubs are offered: French Film Club, Spanish for Beginners, the Cambridge Latin course and Getting to Know German as activities after school. In 2017 a new programme for Young MFL Leaders will be launched linking Year 10 students with local primary schools.
